The easiest method and the one i always use involves the kar rifle you can buy at Harry's shop. Before entering the warehouse, equip the rifle and aim it at the top of the two boxes where he hides behind. From there, you can just snipe him and immediately kill him. Hope this helps 🙏 ☺️ 😄

Personally I enter the warehouse and run straight upstairs to his office. As it is unlocked from the inside, they don’t start shooting instantly so you should have enough time to get there. I’ve never been killed using this method and saves having to drive a car into the water
My personal go to that I discovered through trial and error is a variation on the MGV method: I drive the car into the garage as fast as possible to avoid gunfire, running over one (if not both) of the guys in the back. I bail out of the car and use it as cover to kill the second guy. Being along the back wall means no fire bombs. From there, it's pretty identical to MGV: kill the guys coming down the stairs, hide by the barrels near the stairs to kill the last two up to and then sprint up the stairs to finish off Derek.

My method is to drive the car to the back of the warehouse running over a couple of enemies on the way, take cover behind the car and pick the enemies off as they come down the stairs, you’re also immune to the molotovs being thrown, then carefully make your way to the stairs and there shouldn’t be many enemies left besides Derek

I usually hide under the platform which Derek stands on, directly under him. He throws molotovs and it slowly kills him. It takes only time. And of course - I kill the other gangsters while waiting.
On the PS3 version in this mission, there was the glitch where you can drive a car ever so slightly into the garage BUT back away while the door was closing! If you did this and the door closed, you can hear the enemies firing their guns (presumably at the garage door because the AI is locked onto you). However, if you drive away, depending on what car you drive like 1 or 3 enemies will spawn into your car sitting in passenger seats and then shoot and aim at the driver side while hanging out from their car door windows! Happened to me 3 times!
I died a few times on this mission, and then I said to myself, “I gotta kill that bastard that keeps throwing those stupid molotovs” I didn’t even know it was Derek. I took cover on the first box closest to the garage door. I I took my magnum and shot this guy over the railing up top, then Vito starts some dialogue about his father. And then I was like, “was that Derek?” Surely enough, I went up the steps after eliminating the other thugs and found Derek on the ground defeated by one shot to the head. The most anticlimactic boss defeat ever. 😂
I use to just buy grenades in advance, and then on this fight, kill the two goons on the ground level, and then stand just under the balcony derek is on, side closest to the office. I could consistently line up a throw with the pillar that would get Derek and often most of his minions as well.
I have a fourth metod, enter inside with the car blocking the big closing door and immediately exit on foots. After this you can easily shoot all enemies coming to you in a safe position outiside the storehouse and when they all died after that, the invisible wall will disappear and you can just enter in to finish only Derek
So my first playthrough was on hard and I went into this game blind. I got stuck on this bullshit for about an hour. In the end, I came up with my own method. Go in the corner directly to your left after you walk through the door, his molotovs will hit the stairs. After you kill a few enemies go to where in the MGV method you camp and aim at the stairs, then just chuck a few well placed grenades at him from directly below. I feel like the main issue with this mission comes from the clunky aim and random bullet spread, making it really hard to have consistent success against the enemies. Also, those moltoves doing damage through cover is the stupidest shit I've ever seen.

I was trying everything n i just kept dying on hard mode. First time i tried it this way it worked to my surprise, felt like I cheated the boss fight. Totally, agreed. I loved the challenge the fight offered (you're still killing a capo so of course it has to be this difficult) but the checkpoint were what made me rage quit.

I like your method but I found that when you clear the enemies by the barrels it might be easier to throw grenades up at Derek. I have only done it once so idk if it's a consistent strategy but it worked better than I thought it would
I knew this mission is hard but didn't knew people are struggling this much i didn't used any tricks i just entered the garage and took first cover on the right then i just keep changing my cover btw that cover and barrels in front of it but one thing to be aware of is enemies comes from left behind and right behind too to kill you which needs a lil bit of attention and thats it when almost every enemy is killed i just went upstairs and killed derek!!
The MGV method worked like a charm for me! Having played Mafia 2 many times before this is the first time I am playing on hard difficulty so thank you!
4th and 5th methods : 4th: park the car in the exact position in garage door and wait for the glitch. When the workshop stay open U can relatively comfortably shoot up the enemies. 5th take a car again and park in the workshop. Will have some better spots on cover, but u be carefull with car explosion. (4th is better :D)

Those Molotovs were so BS. How tf can they have such a large AOE!? They can land 5 feet away from me and perfectly in cover and they still hurt you. Ridiculous
i drive armored car/truck to the dock. after the "labor negotiation" and killing Steve, i drive my armored car/truck inside the building, straight to inner back of the building. quickly step out side of my vehicles, and then use my armored car/truck as "shield" against 2 enemies. after that... everything goes as MGV method.
i tried to enter there with joe s Smith Thunderbolt, i ve done as you said above, but almost every time, the car ended up exploding. I ve never thought of bringing a truck inside, thanks🥶
Armored trucks never seem to spawn on PS3 version. almost like they knew you would do that. I always just drove a car back there. They can't hit you with Molotov cocktails which is the hardest thing to avoid
0:45 pulled this off my first try on Hard mode. The key is to have a fully loaded Tommy before entering the Garage and then bum rush the stairs and immediately spray the mag into the guard on the left and then Derek himself before he can throw a Molotov and lastly the guard standing next to him on the middle part of the balcony. Then immediately take cover where Derek was and eliminate the rest of his henchmen as you would any other shooting part of the game.
For me Derek and Steve mostly Derek was one of the best villan in mafia 2 so underrated, the whole connection to Vito’s father was amazing story, you feel Vito’s hatred and revenge against Derek and Steve! if mafia 2 had a cutscene of Derek and right man hand Steve dying it would be perfect. It’s a shame they didn’t get more screen time like the cut content
I'm glad that car glitch still works in the definitive edition. I was playing on the hardest difficulty and you pretty much die instantly once you step in to the wearhouse.
I remember as a kid getting really upset at this part in the mission. All I did to make it easy was to bomb rush his office after entering the garage and it worked about 80% of the time.

I distinctly remember there was a glitch once where you could get the enemies to spawn in the car? I think it was by parking the car where the garage door is or something? I tried it on my most recent playthrough, but couldn't get it to work.
if you have played Call of Duty online make kills you have learned to play tactical Flip drop shot dodges,,, everything is easy!!! in this particular game I didn't find any difficulty, I finished it normally as it should on the very hard level😉
I remember beating this on my x360 on hard on release and hating every second of it... first time playing through it again on hard (many times on other difficulties) on pc, and this was a life saver.

I used a method very similar to the first one when I originally played Mafia 2 a few years ago. I made it through in two tries on hard. I literally just got Mafia Trilogy and I'm replaying them all again so I'm going with method three this time. I always loved these games and I believe they were criminally underrated at the time.
as a different method, beginning of the episode (i mean dock arriving part), go there with a bus. and then when you come to 0:56 stage, ride the bus and park it. so the doors of the garage won't close. then you can exit and kill the enemies easily with a garand or kar98.
My first two playthroughs I took cover as he tossed Molotov cocktails, emplying magazine after magazine into him from my Thompson. My third playthrough, I lobbed grenades! I played through all three difficulties to see if there was any difference. (Just more traffic and npcs)
The working method is taking cover behind the steel pillar that is in front of the stairs up. Mototovs will not get you. Take cover there, then kill 2 enemies on your level that would try to advance on you. Then kill the two enemies that are up with Derek. Then aim at stairs, because enemies may (or may not, it seemed random) run at you from there. If they don't, just kill Derek from the cover. He is running left and right, you need to hit him about 5 times from Tommy gun. The rest of enemies would be at the upper level. Be very very careful when you go upstairs. If there are enemies left, they can kill you nearly instantly.
I ran from the entrance to the other end of the warehouse. I killed all enemies there and I walked careful to get a good angle to throw a grenade up to him. I think that’s the fourth way to do it. This fight isn’t a fair part of the story but it is possible with luck.
Dude thank you for that idea! I’m over here trying these methods, and I can’t do it my enemies seem to be harder. As soon as I went from under Derek to get to the stairs and kill the remaining 3 enemies with him I’d get beamed, I couldn’t ever make it to the barrels by the stairs. So thank you for this tip! I saved my grandes to do this
I’m really curious as to what was the developers’ intended strategy was. It took me years to find a reliable strategy on my own and I really can’t fathom how you’re supposed to do this part without cheesing it somehow
This helped a lot, I recently started my 3rd play through, but this time on hard. So I was kinda worried about this one being a pain in the butt, but with the 3rd method made it pretty easy. Took me less then 5 tries. 1st playthrough took me a couple of hours lol. I'm now in the middle of Chapter 15. Game isn't too hard, nothing like the race in Mafia 1 on hard mode 😂
At Medium I used running upstairs. I'll try the MGV Method for Hard! I don't like to glitch stuff, so I prefer a clean method with involves thinking smart and beating everyone! Thanks.

Ive figured out the last way on my own. However I do it a bit differently: Just run straight to where the two guys spawn, kill them. And then I wait for the guys that run the stairs down. After I killed them I go right below the edge and throw grenades from the previous mission at derek lol. I managed to kill him that way a couple of times and if I didnt kill him, everyone else was dead and it was a 1v1
I do the run up stairs different. I think it's how your meant to roll. I run up, go into the office and use Derreks desk as cover. So go to office without stupid car in water glitch. Just run up and in there from the inside. Welcome.
I almost did the MGV way on my run. I figured out ya run underneath the platform he’s on take out the 2 bottom dudes. In the previous mission killing Mr.Wu I had looted the mini armory and I had Molotovs. After killing the 2 NPCs I went to the Pilar where you aimed for the stairs facing Derek. I yeeted the all of my molotovs at Derek’s position Call of Duty Nuketown style and it actually killed him first try. I killed the rest of the npcs and proceeded to die multiple times after collecting the money because I suck at driving.

It's a very annoying mission on hard. Not because of the difficult fight itself, but because the stupid checkpoint is so far back.

Driving the car into the water helped me and able to use derrick office as cover
I knew this mission is hard but didn't knew people are struggling this much i didn't used any tricks i just entered the garage and took first cover on the right then i just keep changing my cover btw that cover and barrels in front of it but one thing to be aware of is enemies comes from left behind and right behind too to kill you which needs a lil bit of attention and thats it when almost every enemy is killed i just went upstairs and killed derek!!

i drove the car all the way to the back, then aimed at stairs killed them as they came down, then i had just derek and one goon left
The MGV method worked like a charm for me! Having played Mafia 2 many times before this is the first time I am playing on hard difficulty so thank you!
4th and 5th methods : 4th: park the car in the exact position in garage door and wait for the glitch. When the workshop stay open U can relatively comfortably shoot up the enemies.
5th take a car again and park in the workshop. Will have some better spots on cover, but u be carefull with car explosion. (4th is better :D)

i drive armored car/truck to the dock. after the "labor negotiation" and killing Steve, i drive my armored car/truck inside the building, straight to inner back of the building. quickly step out side of my vehicles, and then use my armored car/truck as "shield" against 2 enemies. after that... everything goes as MGV method.
i tried to enter there with joe s Smith Thunderbolt, i ve done as you said above, but almost every time, the car ended up exploding. I ve never thought of bringing a truck inside, thanks🥶
Armored trucks never seem to spawn on PS3 version. almost like they knew you would do that. I always just drove a car back there. They can't hit you with Molotov cocktails which is the hardest thing to avoid

0:45 pulled this off my first try on Hard mode. The key is to have a fully loaded Tommy before entering the Garage and then bum rush the stairs and immediately spray the mag into the guard on the left and then Derek himself before he can throw a Molotov and lastly the guard standing next to him on the middle part of the balcony. Then immediately take cover where Derek was and eliminate the rest of his henchmen as you would any other shooting part of the game.
For me Derek and Steve mostly Derek was one of the best villan in mafia 2 so underrated, the whole connection to Vito’s father was amazing story, you feel Vito’s hatred and revenge against Derek and Steve! if mafia 2 had a cutscene of Derek and right man hand Steve dying it would be perfect. It’s a shame they didn’t get more screen time like the cut content
I'm glad that car glitch still works in the definitive edition. I was playing on the hardest difficulty and you pretty much die instantly once you step in to the wearhouse.

I remember as a kid getting really upset at this part in the mission. All I did to make it easy was to bomb rush his office after entering the garage and it worked about 80% of the time.

P.S. While trying the third method, when you make a run for the covered area behind the staircase to take out the last two guards on the second floor i think there is a 50/50 chance you'll get killed while running for cover - i failed in the firtst try and succeeded in the second.
I distinctly remember there was a glitch once where you could get the enemies to spawn in the car? I think it was by parking the car where the garage door is or something? I tried it on my most recent playthrough, but couldn't get it to work.
I completed this and I died on the open world so I had to do this again
if you have played Call of Duty online make kills you have learned to play tactical Flip drop shot dodges,,, everything is easy!!! in this particular game I didn't find any difficulty, I finished it normally as it should on the very hard level😉

I actually figured out the MGV method on my second playthrough of the game but I never knew about the first 2. Good video.
I remember beating this on my x360 on hard on release and hating every second of it... first time playing through it again on hard (many times on other difficulties) on pc, and this was a life saver.

I used a method very similar to the first one when I originally played Mafia 2 a few years ago. I made it through in two tries on hard. I literally just got Mafia Trilogy and I'm replaying them all again so I'm going with method three this time. I always loved these games and I believe they were criminally underrated at the time.

as a different method, beginning of the episode (i mean dock arriving part), go there with a bus. and then when you come to 0:56 stage, ride the bus and park it. so the doors of the garage won't close. then you can exit and kill the enemies easily with a garand or kar98.
My first two playthroughs I took cover as he tossed Molotov cocktails, emplying magazine after magazine into him from my Thompson. My third playthrough, I lobbed grenades!
I played through all three difficulties to see if there was any difference. (Just more traffic and npcs)

The working method is taking cover behind the steel pillar that is in front of the stairs up. Mototovs will not get you. Take cover there, then kill 2 enemies on your level that would try to advance on you. Then kill the two enemies that are up with Derek. Then aim at stairs, because enemies may (or may not, it seemed random) run at you from there. If they don't, just kill Derek from the cover. He is running left and right, you need to hit him about 5 times from Tommy gun. The rest of enemies would be at the upper level. Be very very careful when you go upstairs. If there are enemies left, they can kill you nearly instantly.
When i was playing it, i parked a car under the garage door and i could i stay out and shot then from there. They didnt hit me When i was out

I ran from the entrance to the other end of the warehouse. I killed all enemies there and I walked careful to get a good angle to throw a grenade up to him.
I think that’s the fourth way to do it.
This fight isn’t a fair part of the story but it is possible with luck.
Dude thank you for that idea! I’m over here trying these methods, and I can’t do it my enemies seem to be harder. As soon as I went from under Derek to get to the stairs and kill the remaining 3 enemies with him I’d get beamed, I couldn’t ever make it to the barrels by the stairs. So thank you for this tip! I saved my grandes to do this
I’m really curious as to what was the developers’ intended strategy was. It took me years to find a reliable strategy on my own and I really can’t fathom how you’re supposed to do this part without cheesing it somehow
This helped a lot, I recently started my 3rd play through, but this time on hard. So I was kinda worried about this one being a pain in the butt, but with the 3rd method made it pretty easy. Took me less then 5 tries. 1st playthrough took me a couple of hours lol. I'm now in the middle of Chapter 15. Game isn't too hard, nothing like the race in Mafia 1 on hard mode 😂

At Medium I used running upstairs. I'll try the MGV Method for Hard! I don't like to glitch stuff, so I prefer a clean method with involves thinking smart and beating everyone! Thanks.

Ive figured out the last way on my own. However I do it a bit differently: Just run straight to where the two guys spawn, kill them. And then I wait for the guys that run the stairs down. After I killed them I go right below the edge and throw grenades from the previous mission at derek lol. I managed to kill him that way a couple of times and if I didnt kill him, everyone else was dead and it was a 1v1
I do the run up stairs different. I think it's how your meant to roll. I run up, go into the office and use Derreks desk as cover. So go to office without stupid car in water glitch. Just run up and in there from the inside. Welcome.
Damn I wish I’ve seen this before failing this mission 50 times and nearly rage quitting 😅😭
I almost did the MGV way on my run. I figured out ya run underneath the platform he’s on take out the 2 bottom dudes. In the previous mission killing Mr.Wu I had looted the mini armory and I had Molotovs. After killing the 2 NPCs I went to the Pilar where you aimed for the stairs facing Derek. I yeeted the all of my molotovs at Derek’s position Call of Duty Nuketown style and it actually killed him first try. I killed the rest of the npcs and proceeded to die multiple times after collecting the money because I suck at driving.
