  • Hello and welcome to Saabkyle04! TH-cam's largest collection of automotive variety! In today's video, we'll take an up close and personal, in depth look at the 1955 Ford Thunderbird Roadster. During this presentation, we will take a 1st person look at what the vehicle is all about beginning with the start up, performance data, fuel economy, the occasional track data, and build quality. Also, I will teach you how to use most of the interior and exterior features in a detailed fashion, that before, you could only get from going to a dealership yourself! Throughout the video, I will highlight key styling and unique differences about the vehicle, any available options, and of course it would not be an enthusiast car video without the good ole engine portion with rev and exhaust note with interior and exterior perspectives. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.
FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHANNEL SEE BELOW: In this channel you will find in depth reviews/tour of automobiles from all over the world, presented in a more detailed fashion than ever before. Basically, this gives the viewer the chance to view the most detailed 1st person look you can get without going to an actual dealer yourself! Every video is consistent in the way I present so viewers know what to expect in my presentations. I treat every vehicle with the same respect whether a 1960 Chevrolet Impala SS or the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador. I film all types of vehicles from past, present, and future while broadening the knowledge of the automotive enthusiast. You will see everything from vintage, brand new, exotic, mainstream, old, etc. I am very proud of this channel and have built it up from amateur videos years ago to what you see today. I wanted to share my love for the automotive world with the rest of the world. Be sure to explore the massive video variety, have fun and enjoy The Driver's Seat of TH-cam!

One of the best looking and most tasteful american cars imo. The styling was not overdone like many other cars of that era, the whole car is just art from every perspective and the amount of details everywhere is astounding. It has a certain european touch to it, which maybe is why I'm liking it so much.

The average salary around this periods of the 1950s was about $5000. The average nice home was about $5000.
A loaf of bread would have cost no more than 20 cent and a bag of potatoes about 5 cent. No wonder it was called the American dream with cars and purchasing power like that.
Even a working class person felt like European upper middle class.

What I mostly miss in the United States, currently, is that common though of "sky is the limit for happiness and achievement" people used to feed in 50s.

If there was to be a TV series set in the mid '50s, about an Australian immigrant (played by me, being an Australian in real life of course), starting a new life in America, this would be the car he'd drive in that series, in light blue base colour, with a white roof. Arguably, the greatest thing to come out of Detroit in the mid '50s.

3 transmissions: Three speed manual. Three speed manual with electric overdrive. And the Ford-o-matic which was a THREE speed in the 50s (in the 60s it was a two speed). The Ford-o-matic started out in 2nd gear under normal driving. If you went WOT it would kick down to low from a standing start .Or you could manually select low, then manually select drive. If you then went back into low, it would lock into 2nd gear until you selected drive again.

As far as reliability is concerned, of course some things on modern cars are more reliable, but older cars were cheaper and easier to fix. I don't think cars being built today would hold up for 50+ years. About the 5 digit odometers, well you have to understand most people back then would buy a new car every 1 to 2 years.

It looks like a palace car honestly. But isn't that how things were made in the 1950's? It's good that they had the style they did then. Modernity is nothing in comparison to the chrome streamlined style of the 1950's. Frigidaire Unimatic washing machines of that era looked just as spectacular. I myself own a 50's washing machine (1959 Hoovermatic 3174) which is very nice, and it does have it's fair share of steamlined 1950's architecture... not quite as much as American machines however because Hoover were Welsh and the UK didn't always make things quite as rich-looking as Americans did. Certainly not with appliances except for really my Hoovermatic, for it competes in a way that it does have a bit of rich 1950's streamlined achitecture on it.
At the moment my washing machine is in pieces undergoing repairs to be able to wash again with minimal if any leakages.
I think I now want a Thunderbird honestly in addition to a Model T. Especially in Turquoise and it must be one from 54 - 57.
Stunning architectural design all the way around! Bring back more of the 1950's streamlining people!

As the owner of a similar '55, there is a lot of incorrect information in this presentation.
Transmissions: There was one automatic, which is not a two-speed, and is not a Cruise-o-matic. It was called a Fordomatic here, and it is a Borg-Warner-designed three-speed with second gear start. It was air-cooled in '55, water-cooled in '56. It starts in second gear, unless you floor the throttle, or shift it manually to "Lo". There was a manual three-speed, with non-synchro first gear, and you could get the three-speed manual with an overdrive. There was no two-speed automatic, nor was there a four-speed manual.
Tops: The hardtop was not standard. No top at all was standard. The car could be purchased with no top, a hardtop, a soft top, or both tops. If the car was ordered with a soft top, there is an extra seal along the rear top curtain that is missing on no-top or hardtop cars.
This car has been converted to 12 volt electricals. It was originally 6 volt in '55; Ford switched to 12 volt systems in '56. The owner didn't change the window or seat motors, which is why they move too fast. You mentioned reversing lights, but this car doesn't have them...they were optional. They do sit above the taillamps. On cars without them, there is a little ribbed fill panel in place of the lenses, which this car has.
The vacuum wipers should not require more than a couple of seconds to build vacuum; the wiper motor on this car is obviously in terrible shape. Vacuum wipers were lousy because you can lose the wiping action if you go to heavy throttle, causing the vacuum to drop. There was an optional pump that was part of the fuel pump, that generated additional vacuum so there was always a supply available. Even under the best of conditions, these things were terrible, but they were cheap, which is why they used them.
That style of wraparound windshield is called a "dogleg windshield". It is not beveled glass.
Finally, a small beef, but the power steering was called "Master Guide", not "Master Glide"..it's right there on the steering wheel hub.

The 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic wasn't available until 1958. Interesting fact about the two-speed Ford-O-Matic: It was, in fact, a 3-speed transmission, only it lacked the clutch-pack to engage the lowest gear automatically. If you started from a dead stop, with the gear-selector in "L", it would be in the lowest possible gear-ratio that it had. Stomp on the gas-pedal, and when it nears red-line, pop it into "D", then back into "L", and it'll shift into the middle gear (a.k.a. passing gear or second gear). Then when it reaches red-line again, put it in "D" and you'll be in the 1:1 gear (a.k.a. high-gear or third gear). That's three distinct gear ratios! If you start off with the gear-selector in "D", it would begin in 2nd gear (a.k.a. passing gear) and would then switch to the 1:1 ratio 3rd gear (a.k.a. high gear) -- it would never automatically engage the lowest gear-ratio when the gear-selector lever was in "D". That was fixed in the Cruise-O-Matic in 1958 -- it was capable of using all three gear ratios of the planetary gearset automatically, and you could manually select any of the three gear-ratios also (hence the reason Ford called it a "Select-Shift Cruise-O-Matic).

They were terrible to, if you revved the engine too high they wouldn't work well, they wouldn't work well if at all while going up hill and at interstate speeds.

The reason the power windows are so quick is probably someone put in a 12 volt battery. The windows are meant for a 6 volt system.

2K tons of CO2 went in the air and 4k gallons of fuel are gone! But I still love this car!

Some interesting observations - 1. How come the power windows are so fast? I want my car to have power windows that fast! 2. You said "...running on leaded gas..." - Is the car still running on leaded gas or was it converted to unleaded, and you just quoted the factory mpg with original fuel system? 3. Why is the spare wheel without a tire? :)))
