What's My Choice? Porsche GT3 or AMG GT R - Only One! | HEAD TO HEAD

- I've recently taken delivery of both the Mercedes-AMG GT R and the Porsche 911 GT3, two cars that serve very similar purposes at almost identical price points. So, if I could only have one of them, which would it be?
After 15,000km on the AMG in 5 months and already 2,500km in just 2 weeks on the 911, I've driven both cars on tracks, Autobahns, town and mountain passes. For this head to head, travelling from the south of Germany through to Italy ahead of Cars and Coffee Brescia, I put the two against each other at high speeds and then in the twisty roads.
Both cars are built in Stuttgart, and both serve similar purposes as track focused versions of their respective cars. My GT3 is completed in a spec to be driven on the race track where by GT R is more prepared as a grand tourer. But what are they each like when you jump straight from one to another?

Two very fine machines, but let me have a go at putting them head to head to make a choice as to which I prefer! It's the Porsche 911 GT3 vs Mercedes-AMG GT R

I think the GT R is a stunning car. The noise it makes is just amazing. Winner for me.

Both cars are phenomenal in their own right, but the GT R just holds a special place in my heart.
GT3 = Precise, sharp sports car
GTR = Classy, luxurious hot rod
Iceman7 the GTR is much more precise than u think, it is 2 seconds faster around the nürburgring than the GT3.
I know lap times are just a part of the story when it comes to these type of cars, but that just proves the GTR is not just a “ hot rod “
The thing about those laptimes is the time made by the Merc was done by a magazine (sport auto) and time of the gt3 was made by Porsche themselves; I think if the time was made by Merc themselves it would be several seconds faster!
Hot rods typically don't handle very well. They are both sports cars.
Nordschleife lap times German magazine SportAuto: GTR = 7.11, GT3 = 7.18 > don't underestimate the GTR ;-)
GoHardGT3RS Marketingring lap time don't mean anything. It's about how it drives, not whether it beats another car by a minuscule amount which was probably paid for anyway.
For me it's definitely going to be GT3

@@revolutionx9370 the rs is a track car its not as enjoyable as a manual gt3, ive driven both and the gt3 puts you i so much more control, it feels epic above 5500 rpm

Having had both cars, and recently acquiring the AMG GT-R, the latter one is an amazing vehicle. The endless power and torque and the sound of the V8 is amazing!
AMG for me all the time. It just feels so much special to me.
I love the way Tim makes you feel part of the driving process. He seems like a cool friend who just happens to own a number hard-core super cars.

Not sure if it was your camera angles or what, but I found this to be a very realistic perspective of driving these cars, too often watching through TH-cam everything looks the same, great video

Love that green on the GT3. Classic good looks. I've seen the GTR in person and it has a bit of theatre to it. Pretty sexy. On a side note, pretty sure the GTR is good on a track too. Didn't it have a faster time than the GT3 and GT3RS at the Top Gear track. And the ring...by 8 seconds?!
Excellent video. Thanks Tim for putting logic and reasoning regarding your selection; and while most of us would lust at experiencing the performance of the GT3 daily, the limited functionality just doesn’t make it practical t do so. I agree in that the merc does an exceptional job in presenting the more purposeful and well rounded super performer. Thanks again for sharing.

Would the 911 Turbo S be more of a competitor to the AMG GT R ?? a little softer and more of a GT than the GT3
id say no, both GT R and GT# are supposed to be track beasts, 911 Turbo S is more in line with standard GT (although turbo is surely much quicker)
Turbo S with proper mods is a monster. A 720S eater.

We'll see in a few years when mods become common for both cars. Bolt-on 991.1s are running high 170s in the 1/2 mile right now, on pump fuel. And with their drivetrain, they can use the power almost everywhere.
AKF .gaming Not sure about the Smart xD That's a little farfetched, but I get what you mean. And the 911 Turbo S is small fry for a 720S, unless it's INSANELY modified to a high standard.

These early GTR videos makes alot of sense as to why you've got the GTR pro, the GT cabrio, and the GT Black series on the way right now.

I love my GT3 and find it comfortable but I have the 18 ways seats. So maybe the GT3 would be the winner with that configuration? Haha. Great video. Enjoy both, you don’t have to choose.
Hey I'm New to this may I ask you a question I'm looking to buy a Porsche soon but don't know which one should I get the carrera base or gt3 also what is the difference on gas consumption is it the same or different

Well Porsche is solely a performance brand, while Mercedes is a high end luxury car brand that also make performance cars like the GTR which is a beast! It all depends on what you prefer, but at the end of the day my choice would be a Porsche. Specifically the 911 GT3 RS which is my Dream car! I currently own a 718 cayman, which is an amazing car as well!
It's not that often you hear and see a screaming GT3 flyby on the autobahn and having the feel that Tim took you along for the ride in his gelbgrun jet cockpit... great!
These 2 cars are so great. Every time you hop into the GTR you think it is the one you would keep if you have to make a choice but then you drive the GT3 shortly after and you change your mind again and you say this is the one. Great video as this is the same exact though that goes through anyone who owns both. But I must say if you live in the US, where the highway speeds are limited to 70 mph, the GTR frustrates you as you could never experience the full potential of the GTR, and sure you could take it to the track but then the GT3 has the edge. So I must say if you live in the US probably the GT3 makes much more sense.

The Turbo S would be a good Autobahn alternative to the GT3
Fil Cona but you will miss the sound of the natural aspirated exhaust sound :(
Absolutely. When you're doing 200kph and put your foot in it, and it accelerates like it's in 2nd... that's the Turbo S.
Because I'm young and stupid and can cope with a bit of back pain, I'd choose the GT3. Great video Tim 😁
You’ve been doing some great comparison videos recently. I particularly enjoyed the video when you drove all of your cars on the Nurburgring circuit
GT3. It's Smaller, gives you more feedback, exciting to drive and it comes with a manual.
Driving in comfort is my priority . I'll go for the AMG GTR too

Your honesty is refreshing.
Do you have any plans to review the GT3 Touring? I think that would be very interesting, as it is slightly more practical / daily, so maybe that would bring its position more in line with your Gtr.
The Porsche is more special but the AMG win in overall practicality. It would be fun to keep the Porsche as it is and keep upgrading the AMG like a project car
not really. he made it impractical with the dumb roll cage and horrid bucket seats then bitched about it. a GT3 with no roll cage and no buckets will happily go to a track just as a benz GTR will.
Such a hard choice, for me it would be the GT3 just, and I do mean only just, by the tiniest of margins, the GTR is just mind blowing!

Jolly good review. You drive them like I would. I'm a VW BMW Porsche man. You've convinced me the Merc is the better car. I would however take the Turbo S over all.

Oh my god, what a terrible dilemma !! I feel for you, I really do !
Not even a comparison... I had a 2020 E63S AMG kept it for 6 months and sold it, the money that they loose it’s unreal, Porsche still has the best resale value between the two and looks, my GT3 will be here in 2 days and can’t wait to get it.

S-Class for the Autobahn and daily drive - GT3 for the weekend.
My choose now will be the AMG GTR,
A car that perfect for road trip and daily.
The GT3 just for fun on track.
But if I have a Garage like U,
I will wait the GT3 RS,not the GT3,
Because to me,the GT3 RS are the ultimate track machine and purely for fun to drive.
GTR for daily,GT3 RS for fun on track or Sunday morning drive.

looking at that AMG vs GT3 makes me realize that almost all car manufacturers are lagging behind Mercedes
That green is so outlandish. I would struggle to make that choice for that car. I think its a bit too much when spending that kind of money.

I would go with a GT3 Touring or 911R for the comfy seats to travel in and still have that awesome 911 chassis and engine for when you get to those lovely Italian mountain roads. Great video, watched all of it.
Competition between manufacturers has really improved technology and styling available to consumers.
I have been growing toward the GT3 but The AMG GTR is just sooo lovely I would choose the AMG :D
At the top gear test track, the gt-r doesn't just beat the gt3, it beats the gt3rs.

They're equally great, but I'd go for the GT3 because of the availability of manual transmission.
I'd still have to take the GT3 in Manual Gearbox. Finding this level of performance with that option is basically impossible anywhere else.

I can relate, I feel both of these cars are so damn sexy and each have their own perks that to this day I still can't choose, feels like you would need both to drive each depending on the day.
