When Greg relates the history of the Crystal Gems, an eerie, off-key version of the Rose Quartz theme is playing. "No such thing as a good war, kiddo...Gems were destroyed, and people too." Wise words there, Greg.
Yeah, the “aliens” thing is less of a PLOT reveal-because yeah, like you said, we’ve been talking about space and the gem “homeworld” for a while-and more of a GENRE reveal because up until this point the show has felt pretty much like fantasy (despite the little hints otherwise). This reveal is the definitive answer that no, the gems are not magical, they’re aliens and the show is now solidly sci-fi.
I love your point here. Genre reveals should be more common- I wouldn't have watched the show if I knew it was sci-fi from the start. I've never been one for sci-fi, but I am now, because SU introduced it to me in such a fun way.
5:05 to clear things up, Amethyst came out of her hole (we're she was made) AFTER the war. She didn't participate in the war back then (it's revealed in a comment she says in "Rose's scabbard" episode), she joined the crystal gems after all other gems left Earth (leaving Rose and the rest on Earth)
Technically, it's just supposed to be a revelation for Steven, and the people who took a bit to put the clues together. Steven just never put it all together because he never saw Peridot as evil, per se.
You’re one of the steven universe reactors who catches the most stuff that’s harder to catch and more subtext-ish that i’ve seen, seriously! Your reactions are great!
The start of this episode is meant to mirror the start of the second episode of the show, "Laser Light Cannon" (although it was actually the first produced episode of the show). Both episodes start with Steven getting Fry Bits and then something comes from space to interrupts things. In both episodes, Steven then runs to the Gems on the beach with a telescope, looking up at the intruding object. It's a neat little nod to the start of the show and also an acknowledgement of how much things have changed since then.
That's an interesting question. Does Beach City only cover the peninsula? Because if so, that's a small city. My city is over 10 times the size of the peninsula.
I like how they piece everything together in the episode. As you say, it's not the biggest revelation, but it's pretty amazing how Greg just sits Steven down and says, look, you know this. You have all this information. It all fits together. And by god, it does.
9:52 That fucking scream still hunt me.Dude this scene is horrifying, it destroyed every bit of trust we have on the Cristal gems strength against the unknown "space gems".
. (This and the other episode are the most impactful ones of the series so far it brings a lot of lore and mystery to this story. When i saw this when it first premiered i was shock especially at the ending and also i figured that you weren’t going to be as surprised as i thought you were be)
Garnet was puffed (when only their physical form is destroyed and not their gem) but in a different (scarier) way, like pearl on the sword fighting episode.
(3:37 it almost feels weird sometimes when Steven is like...childish? More than expected? is not a big revelation for the viewer, but it is to steven, he is just a kid that discover than their mothers were the bad guys and they redeem themself, he has so many doubts and he cant ask any because he has to go and save them
Good thing Uncle Grandpa teached Steven how to summon his shield, he was a real one, Steven's most important mentor
Even though it's not cannon to the series according to the creator.
@@sonicandmylittleponyfan2002it’s canon in our hearts.

It's also like *really* revealing it to Steven that *all* the Gems, including his mom, came to Earth as actual invaders and stuff
@@pieflower6419 Genre reveals are so rare but oh so awesome
Meet Jasper. She's an absolute BRUTE!
Love Jasper, although she is not the most reasonable gem.

I love the artistic style of this episode. The monochrome colouring brings a lot !
9:08 the fact that it's a literal finger gun though🤣

YESS, SUCH A GOOD EPISODE. I love how Steven was like "I'm a crystal gem TOO!" 👀

7:04 Unsure, they are in a different city but yeah, it would probably be in a general area where people evacuate
