Honestly, Cringey has gotten such a bad rap these days. That I'd rather call Sonic "Corny but awesome", like at least between 1991-2009; it did everything with passion and sincerity without needed to laugh at itself just to make itself appear cool.

Fun thing I recently learned: the Shadow the Hedgehog gun did not exist at the time the game was made, but someone made it afterwards, I hear so that it would be real.

Yeah Adventure one is very cheesy and is rather slow passed compared to modern games. But the stages and overworld were pretty unique and still really cool. But those cutscenes, they're horrendous. It's amazing how much better Adventure 2 was in that regard.

@@ledkicker2392 Exactly. They're cheesy in the best possible way - something that a kid can look at and actually think is cool because the games take themselves seriously. Some of the more recent Sonic games unfortunately took the opposite approach and were filled with goofy moments and self-deprecating humor that no one could take seriously. Sonic is at his best when he feels cool and the Adventure games, especially SA2, accomplished that in spades.

Sonic Heroes isn’t co-op, you actually play as all three characters at once by switching which member is the leader (speed, power, or flight). The different teams also vary in level difficulty, but you need to play all four to get the full story and the secret ending. There IS multiplayer, but it’s just versus battles and races.
I forgot the Sonic '06 trailer. I laughed when the narrator said "Sonic's faster than ever!"
Sonic Adventure 2 is my favourite Sonic game. It has it's issues but I grew up with it and am completly nostalgia blind. But I love seeing you watch some of these trailers with no context and getting to play them for the first time. Some of which you will have a blast, other times you will hate your life. Welcome to the Sonic series.
Shadow has the absolute best backstory. I can't wait for you to experience it!
I feel like it's understandable. Same like how I'm a big Sonic, fan but never really played the originals and only kept up with the modern Sonic games. Definitely excited to see you tackle some of these games, especially once you get to the Boost games. Here's hoping you also get to finish Legends Arceus, but overall, it's looking like another great year of games for you!
Sonic Unleashed is my 2nd favorite game of all time, and I’m really looking forward to you playing it. Though I should warn, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I hope you’ll like it! I haven’t regularly watched your content in over a year so I can’t wait to watch the Sonic series

Some of these games I'm really excited for you to play for the first time, like Adventure 1&2 (my personal favorites), Unleashed, and Generations.
And the others will be pretty damn wacky!
I'm not gonna spoil anything, but I just want it to be known that...while it may be hard to please the Sonic fanbase, it's not impossible. Some games just weren't up to the same quality as other games coming out at the time, or just straight up alienated the fanbase in favor of "bringing in a new audience" (if i had a nickel for every time i heard that sentence...).
All in all, I'm really excited for you to check these games out :)

“Maybe it’s very difficult to satisfy the sonic community” Truer words have never been spoken. I have never seen a more critical fanbase in my life.
I’ve always been rather open minded about 3D sonic, post heroes, because I never really expected games to play the same. It’s not that a lot lol of these games are bad, it’s just people hate when different mechanics are used in sonic games and deem them bad without looking at wether or not the mechanics are well implemented and fun.
Well there is also the fact that when they use these new mechanics, that they aren't very well implemented and even very buggy. It is already known that Sonic 3D games used to be (maybe even now, don't know for sure) rushed in their development. It isn't that new isn't hated, but the refinement for the audience experience is lacking that it is being hated.
Facts lol!
Well the franchise is divided into pieces due to them continuously trying to change the formula. When one game fails they seemingly scrap the whole style and restart from scratch. Sonic 06 was viewed poorly "I guess they don't like slow 3D platformers anymore", Sonic Free Riders was viewed poorly "I guess people are tired of this series", Sonic Forces is hated "I guess they don't like the boost formula anymore".
A lot of these games could have been made better if they just did a bit more focus teams. Sonic and the Black Knight was a vast improvement over Secret Rings with that game literally having invisible collectables. How are you supposed to find those without a guide? Not to mention 90% of that game are minigames that are required to beat the game. Sonic Team only seems to see a game was viewed poorly and goes full scorched earth on it instead of just reading why people didn't like it.
Classic Sonic could have been good, if he didn't control like a tank. Sonic Forces could have been much better if the stages were a bit longer, Free Riders was on a doomed platform, etc. This is a regard Nintendo with Zelda has been vastly better with. They don't just make an entirely new game when one is less popular, they change what people didn't like about the last. Skyward Sword was called too linear, well now BotW is the least linear, Wind Waker looked childish, well Twilight Princess is the most adult themed yet. They didn't have to reinvent the wheel, just take a bit of advice.
No...if everyone's hating on a game there are it's reasons.
Granted I don't think any sonic game should be labeled some of the worst games of all time...but some of them are justifiable
I think one of the Sonic Forces Trailers you kinda missed was one for “Enter Infinite”. As a Sonic fan myself, let’s just say he’s “Ow the edge!”
Just so you know, if you plan on playing Forces, I recommend playing Mania first, Forces is actually a sequel (at least we think) to Mania, so you’ll understand what’s happening if you play Mania.

The issue with forces is that it had incredible, ambitious ideas, but then completely failed the execution. The gameplay, physics, and level design are worse than Unleashed/Colours/Generations, the story is ambitious but somehow worse-written than Generations and Lost World, and the OC just plays like a worse version of Sonic.
The $40 launch price for Forces said it all. It was clearly a budgeted game made by inexperienced developers. (Many of the talented devs at Sonic Team who worked on Unleashed and Generations left before Forces was made.)
Main issues, the levels were too easy, and the story wasn't put together well enough since the original game was going to be Generations 2.
@@Superderpynerd Not only were they too easy (incredibly simplistic level design) but they were too short. Some of the stages would actually end before the music could finish looping.

You forgot to include a lot of the handheld games which are also canon to the original story. Such as how Sonic first met Cream in Sonic Advance 2, Blaze in Sonic Rush, and due to in game time travel Silver in Sonic Rivals. There’s also Sonic Battle which shows when Sonic met Emerl which is important to the story of Gemerl in Sonic Advance 3.

NGL, when I first saw Shadow, I thought he was some kind of Dark Sonic at first. Luckily, I had a friend who I rode the school bus with, who also was in the same classroom as myself at times, to correct me. I think that he was also showing me Shadow in a magazine he had, but since it was so long ago, I forget the exact details.
This, but applied to everyone in SA2 that mistakes Shadow for Sonic.
Sonic '06 trailers vs. the released game, in a nutshell:
Due to "15th anniversary" time pressure, the devs had to make a choice. Their press preview / gameplay trailer build was polished, but prone to crashing. Their earlier builds were _very_ unpolished, but also _didn't_ hard-lock the console.
Deciding that a buggy game was better than a crash-prone game, they printed the 'alpha' build. The only things 'finished' in this version are the OST and the pre-rendered cutscenes.

Oh Lord, you're in for a CRAZY and wild ride of mixed emotions my guy, some good some bad.
People are saying this already, but I'm just saying it again so it's more likely to be seen, you should absolutely get the Dreamcast conversion mod for Sonic Adventure. It restores it to have the look and feel of the Dreamcast version. Sonic Adventure DX kind of just broke a lot of the game. It looks way worse and has a bunch of new bugs that weren't present in the original.
Yes this is so important and something I tell everyone before they play the adventure games.
Definitely the best way to play adventure 1
I'd say in general, just download the full Better SADX mod. It has the Dreamcast conversion built in with a bunch of optional ones as well including the option to toggle the old and new character models and even use the new models with old textures (basically the best they ever looked), you can make the light speed dash instant or quicker, gives true widescreen support, native controller support, lets you play as Super Sonic in stages (which is very broken), it has the Dreamcast DLC that is unobtainium otherwise, etc. It's really just the best way to play the game.
Adventure 2 is a lot more iffy. It is really unstable on PC but it does look best there if you can get it to work right. I know my copy of that game hasn't worked in a while and I just haven't bother to try and fix it. It might be best to play that one on a PS3.

OHHHHHHHH DUDE IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS! Adventure 1, 2, unleashed, secret rings and sonic hero’s were my child hood! I was so happy watching this and can’t wait to see you play these! Legit got goosebumps rewatching these cause it’s been SO long for me as. I’m not gonna spoil anything but Some of the others they got bad rep mostly for story. But if there is one thing I’ve learned about sonic games, it doesn’t matter (see what I did there?) how bad the game is, the music is gonna slap! 06 and SA2, and secret rings probably has the best soundtracks, imo. 06 has 2 separate albums with 3 versions of the theme song and they all are awesome!

It's been about exactly 20 years since I first experienced Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on my GameCube with my sister, our first foray into the Sonic universe
Can’t wait for you to learn about all the awesome characters. Sonic has so many of my favourite video game characters, Metal Sonic is super underrated.
This is SUPER refreshing. Seeing someone basically fresh to the series, untainted by the fandom. I hope you enjoy playing the series! Don't get tainted!
sonic forces is "frustratingly average", let me explain
one of the best concepts (in my opinion) or one of the best designs for a villain in any sonic game as you saw in the trailer and is my favourite villain in all of sonic is in this game but his character is written so bad and the origin they gave him is so lazy and uninspired.
also the fact that the avatar customization is incredibly expansive and is amazing. this feature is sadly paired with an average game and I think it deserves better and we may never see it again.
lastly the game is only 3-4 hours and the story is pretty cliche. the most interesting part is the huge set piece they save for the end which I think is really cool

Agreed. It's a shame as the plot was such a cool idea, but it was made in literally the worst possible way. It was basically the Sonic franchise's Mass Effect Andromeda. A game that could have been great but was marred by poor management decisions and laughable writing.
The exact definition of this game is "good ideas on the paper but poorly executed", you cannot describe it a better way
Let me tell ya doing this is going to put you down a loooong rabbit hole that the sonic community has been digging since the first 3D game.
Overall I’m glad to see you so excited to play sonic generations; it’s one of my favorite games of the series. Just a quick warning though- while sonic forces looks like the game everybody wanted, it wasn’t really what it was hyped up to be.
My favorite Sonic games are Unleashed and Generations for sure. I like a lot of Sonic games, and I also don’t enjoy a lot of them as well, but Unleashed is 80% fun overall for me and Generations is perfect in my eyes (most likely due to nostalgia because I was like 13 or something). We’ve got a long way to go before Dee plays them if he intends to play the games in chronological order (which I’m sure he will) but I’m hyped for those moments in particular. Can’t wait to see him slowly get dragged into the chaos that is the Sonic series and fandom.

To clarify something unique about the situation of Sonic Forces's release, and the fans's feelings about it.
Little more the 2 weeks before Sonic Forces's release official date the whole games was livestreamed on TH-cam, by someone who got it early. The Fanbase rewatched it and its many re-uploads, and absolutely loved what they saw and heard, becoming incredibly hyped.
While the gameplay and level design the fanbase saw very basic, they said as long as it felt good to play they'd enjoy it.
With Story, writing, and music, the fanbase absolutely it all, calling it a big improvement, and even getting emotional watching and listening to it all.
But do to it feeling bad to control/play, once they got their hands on it they twisted and ripped it apart the story, writing, visuals, and even music, do to not living up to the hype gameplay-wise.
Sonic Forces only had 1 year of actual dev time on the game, and 3 years on its new engine.
Expectations can be a double-edged sword in the Sonic series, so it's recommended to keep them fairly tame if possible.

The Sonic 2006 commercials just leave a strange impact on me, the game itself does. Everything about the game was so surreal to me, I still play it to this day.
I'm surprised the OP for *Sonic Riders* *Sonic Colors* and *Sonic CD* were left out, they're one of the bests.

Sonic 06 is known for a banger Soundtrack, & its glitches. It's Hella glitchy 💀 I remember 100%-ing it back then, as well as Unleashed & Shadow the Hedgehog

Been playing sonic since Genesis. Had a Dream cast and loved the opening for Sonic Adventure
I used to have the game of Sonic Adventure in Gamecube. The best weekend for me when I was a kid was some pizza, a coke bottle and Sonic Adventure with my brother. By the way, the kaiyu is Chaos, the god of destruction and main enemy of the game.
There are a couple of older games from before Sonic Adventure that would give you some more context for Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, and The Chaotix. Sonic CD, originally for the Sega CD, and Knuckles Chaotix, originally for the Sega 32X.
The newer versions of these characters are essentially revamped versions though, so you might not need their older contexts.

Shadow the hedgehog is a game that i.....must admit i love. Honestly it is probably the sonic game I've played the most.
Aww man, me and my best friend downloaded the intro video to Sonic Adventure back in 1999, along with character trailers for every playable character in the game, all voiced in japanese. We couldn't understand a single word (I just barely knew some English from school) but we watched them over and over again and never grew tired of it. A new Sonic game finally coming out was so hype, and the graphics on the Dreamcast were unmatched by anything back then. Good times all around from my days as a wee lad.

Sonic '06 is not as horrible as the fandom makes it seem, Sega released it early and it's full of bugs, physics problems and all that, and the story has a few things that could be removed and it would be much better, but ignoring that it's pretty broken, I'd say the game would be an 8/10

Sonic adventures DX was my first sonic game and I LOVED it on GameCube. Shadow the hedgehog is Bizarre but definitely one of a kind. And the Sonic Colors I find super underrated and very fun to play!

My fav Sonic game was probably Sonic Riders, but I guess it wouldn't count as much, but my first mainline Sonic game was Unleashed and it was wonderful.
I know I haven't played any other games, but I would've liked to play Sonic Adventure 2. And maybe Shadow, only because it seems wacky but fun in a way. Also choice games are interesting to me
Sonic was such a huge part of my childhood from Adventure to Sonic 06. I still fondly remember getting Shadow the Hedgehog for my 10th birthday and being so excited. Know that while 3D Sonic games aren’t perfect, there’s fun to be found in pretty much every one of them.
As a huge Sonic fan, I can't wait for you to get to Heroes and Unleashed especially, but I'm also quite interested at how you take in 06 and Forces.

Sonic heroes is a game where you control three characters at once and switch between speed power and flight formations
Power being better for smashing obstacles and combat, flight for crossing gaps and saving yourself from dying, and speed for running off the edge of platforms to your death

I too grew up with sonic and sonic entire series is my favourite. I am glad we can relate to that.

I have played maybe 3 Sonic games in my life (I'm 35) and I only ever finished 1 "Sonic Rush" on the DS. I do however love the cinematics of "Sonic Unleashed" ( I watched another youtuber play it a few years ago) I am looking forward to watching you play whatever games you choose/are able to. The first Sonic Forces trailer is old enough that it says for NX instead of Nintendo Switch (NX was the code name for the System). The second trailer does say Switch, so it shows you the general time frame everything released.
Just a note, the current best way to play Sonic Adventure is the PC version with the Better SADX mod. It gives you all the advantages of the Gamecube version with the graphical and audio improvements of the Dreamcast version. Plus it's currently the only way to play it in widescreen. Adventure 2 was wide screen on all HD consoles, but Adventure 2 is really buggy on PC. It's not the best place to play it even if it looks the best when it does work. I never heavily looked into how to fix those issues you'd have to do your own research unfortunately.

Man, I remember bringing my GameCube (the most portable console since it actually has a handle) to a wedding as a kid to play Sonic Heroes
There is a lot of fun to be had with the 3D Sonic games, as long as you keep an open mind, and have some patience with the wonky 3D mechanics. You will definitely learn a lot of lore for the series playing through these games, so a lot of your questions will be answered as you play.
My favorite Sonic game is going to be a spin off game, and a bit of an odd choice at that; Sonic Riders. It was a genuinely good and unique racing game, that I dumped several hours of playtime into.
Sonic mania is my favorite sonic game. I recommend playing it.
I just realized something in these 2006 trailers, and other people that know the game probably know too.
Not gonna spoil how the game actually is, but at least let's just agree that the camera work makes miracles when you implement it right. No wonder why people was hyped with this game and how they learned how to hype after they played it.
Ngl sonic 06 trailer looks pretty badass. Why couldnt Frontiers present itself like that.
When you play Sonic 06, I recommend doing so on PC, with Mods to fix up the gameplay and mechanics.
SA2 will forever have a special place in my heart. Hasn't seen anything Sonic that's been quite as epic as it since, except for the recent movies and the OVA.
