  • I got tired of seeing the commercials for Samsung's Family Hub refrigerator with the cameras inside, so I decided to make my own. I used a Raspberry Pi and USB webcam to take a picture inside our fridge and upload it.
    Whenever the door opens, a light sensor triggers the a simple program I wrote to take a picture and upload it via FTP to our website. Total cost was about $80 dollars.
    See what's in our fridge!

    That was really neat. I like how you walked through that process. I've never looked into programming before. I didn't know it was like MySpace (if anyone ever used that) when you could add those codes to change your layout/ add falling hearts etc... Seems complicated, but less intimidating to explore. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Great projects. It would be cool if it had a time/date stamp on the image and it can be installed to other things like garage door or shed door then you can go back and see what day your shovel went missing and possibly who borrowed it. I like the code/webpage idea all so. Thumbs up.

    Cool project Mike, good job! Thought of doing something like this myself. But after a little research, it looks like back in January a company called Smarter released a $100 Frig camera that does the same thing. Takes the fun out of it of course. I'm not affiliated, just an FYI.

    I know there are other cams these days, as we are living four years later but wow.. this is so cool to see! Are you selling cams or sdcards now or did you help develop existing fridge cams that are on the international market?

    Cool project, definitely worth the effort considering the $6,000 price tag on the market one. However, I don't see this type of thing ever being as efficient as a simple grocery list. View of all items in the fridge is obstructed on both yours and the market one.

    Maybe you could add a small two slim wires and put a potentiometer at the top right of the fridge door and sense what angle the fridge door is at and only take a picture when the door is at that angle or specific resistance. Just a thought on how to take a picture at a specific angle.

    The only thing I might add is that the image could be incorrect. For example if you opened it and took out the tea, the latest photo would still show the tea as it was taken right after the fridge was open and before you removed the Tea., not right before it was closed and after you removed something.

    Cool project. I don't think many people would be interested in buying an SD card with the program on it but if you would like a little income from doing projects like this you can set up amazon affiliate links where you put links in the description to all the stuff you used in this project and if a person buys something through that link you get a small cut. Now I don't know the ins and outs of how this works but it's another form of income which no one is paying any extra money for.

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV

      I thought it might, but no problem with it at all!

  • @cafn8ed74
    @cafn8ed74 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    nice project. I'm wondering if lens fogging has been an issue. I looked in your fridge, and the image looked a bit cloudy. Likely more of an issue if the door is being opened frequently, but a cold lens coming into contact with warm, damp Florida air seems like a perfect storm. If the camera could live outside the door, and peek in when it's opened that could help. Not sure if the added complexity would be justified, though, on a project that already works fairly well.

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV
      @MikeAndLaurenTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It only seems to be a problem in the early morning. Not sure what changes at different times of the day? Maybe the humidity?

    • @cafn8ed74
      @cafn8ed74 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike and Lauren - could be more humid in the morning. If it's cool at night, chances are that your a/c is running less, and therefore drying the air less (at least that's my speculation.)

  • @thecorbies2521
    @thecorbies2521 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi M&L. I like the concept of this project, but as you are already aware, it has limitations. Like not being to see the contents of the door etc. So, I think at the moment I wouldn't be inclined to install one. Having said that, the SD card idea sounds promising. I like more the idea that there could be a barcode scanner in the kitchen so that when you use stuff, and if you're near the end of it, you could scan it and perhaps that info would be stored on a Raspberry Pi or Arduino and it would effectively generate a 'shopping list' for your next shop. We, (my family and I), do quite a lot of online grocery shopping these days, so to be able to copy and paste the shopping list into that supplier (without first having to do a 'stock check'), would be extremely useful. Not only that, but if it were possible to access the Raspberry Pi remotely, (and then copy and paste the list), you could do the shopping without having to be at home. This also helps to solve the fridge issue (although along a different line), but it includes EVERYTHING else at the same time. I can't help feeling that there would be a lot of commercial interest in a system like that. Love your videos. Regards Mark in the UK

    Random question from looking at the page source, but why is there a link to soundproofdrywall.net? That seems random to me as they sell drywall(maybe you work there what do I know haha). Is the image being uploaded and hosted on that website and your website is just displaying it?

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV
      @MikeAndLaurenTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, around 2011 is when I opened my hosting package with hostgator and that was the default domain I was using. At the time I was experimenting with soundproofing ideas and thought I was gonna make a business out of it. So anything I upload goes to that old domain first.

      +Mike and Lauren It looks like the newest version has a pi cam connection but that is going to have the same narrow view. They do make hubs and other stuff but it is all added equipment. If you have to buy too much stuff to do it the cost savings is a wash. Anyway I loved the project and video!

  • @TechByMattB
    @TechByMattB 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you should give the program away for free, just because what it sounds like is you combined code from a bunch of other people who you got it from for free. Though I dont think the code itself has much commercial viability I do think a stand alone device similar to this that maybe texted you the picture or you could view the picture in an app would be more viable. It could have a suction cup to be placed onto the fridge. Power would be the trickiest part but Im guessing the power draw is very minimal so if you could get it so you only had to charge it like once a month then that would be something that in my opinion would be commerially viable.

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV
      @MikeAndLaurenTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tech By Matt I am giving it away for free like I said in the video. The SD card would be if you're more of a "hardware" type person and setting up the OS, static ip, fswebcam, daemon settings etc don't interest you.

    Very cool! Electrical engineer here, yes a linear regulator like your 7805 just cuts off the voltage, dissipating that excess energy as heat. So the higher that the output voltage is over 5V, the more heat that's generated and the lower the efficiency. The switching power supply you ended up using is a DC-DC "buck" converter, bucking down from 12V to 5V. Something like this would have worked just the same, but in this case your car adapter is probably the best method! www.amazon.com/RioRand-LM2596-Converter-1-23V-30V-1Pcs-LM2596/dp/B008BHAOQO#nav-search-keywords

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV
      @MikeAndLaurenTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually bought this one before realizing it's basically what I already had. Then I thought of the car charger. www.amazon.com/DROK-Regulator-Numerical-Adjustable-Stabilized/dp/B015YZZ1G8/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1465690246&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=voltage+regulator&psc=1
      I'll keep it around, I'm sure it will eventually come in handy.

    • @jon.denning
      @jon.denning 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike and Lauren That one looks adequate too, yeah DC-DC converters like these always come in handy.

    Wouldn't the Samsung take a picture when you start closing the door? That way it would show what you have just taken out/put in whereas when it does that at the beginning you don't have the actual last state.

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV
      @MikeAndLaurenTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the Samsung has lights inside the refrigerator that allow it to take a picture after the door is closed. That would have required 3 cameras which I wasn't interested in. This is accurate enough for our purposes (mostly novelty).

    I've been programming for a while and there's a few small things you could do to increase your code quality:
    1. Put this line before the whole program (without quotes): "#!/usr/bin/env python3". In general, this line is considered good practice and will ensure that the code is run by the right executable on the system, especially if others are using it. More info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shebang_(Unix)
    2. It seems like you've left some password information on line 14. I could be wrong, but if you have, you should change the server's password right away.
    Other than the above two points, great job! I may try this out myself if I can get the time.

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV

    • @RyanGaus
      @RyanGaus 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more suggestion - though its a pain, you should probably change the password you use to connect to your FTP server. It's good practice to throw away any "private" credentials that have been made public.

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV

    I cannot overstate how horrific it is, that a British computer should be involved in a project that involves TEA being stored in a FRIDGE. Our nations have a history of fighting over this stuff, y'know.
    More seriously - brilliant. The ultra-wide-angle short-focus webcam is a good find, especially that it seems to be supported out-of-box under Raspbian. I've tried adding a fisheye lens to the official Raspberry Pi camera (v1) with poor results.

I guess what I am getting at is that since you are a strong problem solver, is it a choice to do these fun things over a 9-5 job??? I am asking this in respect to your original goal was to get to 400k and be financial independent. I am sure with your frugal side doing 9-5 would get you to MMM 620k in under 10 years.

      Which is why you don't buy a 6,000$ fridge

      I see it useful for grocery runs, just open the fridge and go, no need for a list.

    Or just look inside the fridge before you go to the grocery store like we've always done.i can't imagine even wanting this feature in a fridge, seems like a waste and something else to break

      ...or just grow your own vegetables and hunt your Meat like we've always done...
      you don't have to build/buy this feature if you don't like it, but just think about the possibilities such devices can offer ;)

      +5280 Street Dogs I think you missed the point.

      +Mike and Lauren no , I don't think so
      I really think there comes a to much "for me" ridiculousness with gizmos, not yours in general, all you did was do it cheaper with what folks already have. I think if someone bought a fridge with this feature it's a ridiculous feature and just so you know my new fridge without this feature was only about a grand less if even that much.

      With my memory, I would open my fridge before I go to the grocery store, and when I get there, I would have already forgot what I need. So, probably this has a market.

      By "you missed it," I mean I said in the video I started this project to make fun of having a camera in your refrigerator. I just wanted to teach myself programming and the best way to do that is to have a project in mind and hack your way through it.

    Do you have to have the refrigerator door open to take the picture ???
    LOL
    Why don't you just take a picture with yer phone instead of doing all that ?
    Hahahahahahaha
    Am I missing something ?
    I don't get it...
    The point of having a camera is when your at the store, you can look inside.
    But yeah, no matter what, it doesn't take a picture of the entire fridge, so...
    ... Refrigerator cameras are kinda silly, unless you want to check on milk, which is usually in a container that you can't see through anyways.
    And unless the pickle jar is turned right, the label stops you from seeing them and anything else that's in a glass jar.
    Hehehehehehehe
    I do love DIY projects though, and I commend you for your efforts...lol
    My fridge camera is broke on my new Samsung fridge, so I'm searching out how to fix or replace it, even though, like I said, it's kinda pointless, but the girl wants it fixed, so....
    Here I am taking it out on you !!!!
    Hahahahahahaha
    Sorry about that !
    LOL
    Have a great day dude !
    Good luck with your fridge camera.
    And take inventory before you hit the store !!!
    LOL 👍😂👍
    Hahahahahahaha
