The Story of Edda Pureheart... Tragedy You Might Have Missed! [FF14 Lore]

  • One of the things that I love about the story within Final Fantasy 14 is that little things matter. Pieces of the puzzle that you might not even notice at first glance, come together to blow your mind. A prime example is the tragic story of Edda Pureheart...couldn't wait to share it so I hope you'll enjoy!
PS we got a new highlight/vod channel going. You can find it here:

Did you know Edda's ghost will stalk you after completing Tam-Tara HM? She rarely shows herself, however, if the following conditions are met you just might be able to spot her in one of the three city-states: Rainy and Nighttime (specifically around 2:00AM Eorzea Time). She seems to have a thing for lampposts. It's a nice little easter egg that's easily missed.

A small addition - in the first lorebook you can find out that Avere wasn't usually an asshole as we see in his only appearance in game. During the their trek into Tam Tara, he was especially anxious and flighty due to his frustration at losing his engagement ring. That coupled with the regular prodding from Liavinne trying to convince him to run away with her and break up with Edda left him on edge when with his party.
Also you might check out the party hanging about Sastasha during the quest to unlock that Hard Mode - there's something *very* familiar about it...

The story of Edda and her adventuring group is an interesting introduction to the darker side of the Warrior of Light’s legacy. Through out the game we continuously see the people we’ve inspired and the lives we’ve touched with our accomplishments, but not everyone knows how special the Warrior of Light really is, and can live up to our legacy. During the beginning of the game we’re just another adventurer and along the way people learn of us being the Warrior of Light and aspire to be just like us, but not everyone can be a Warrior of Light and that’s where this story devolves. We learn of the many adventurers who take up arms and try to follow our lead and usually the conversation ends there. In the case of Edda and friends unfortunately we learn that the Warrior of Light’s influence, while not malevolent in any way, has caused the death or incapacitation of adventurers looking to be just like us. That is why this story hurts as much as it does and hits very close to home as a player. There are people in the real world we aspire to be like or things we aspire to become or do, but not everyone is up for the task and sometimes it can have deadly or horrible consequences even if the intentions are pure.

One of my favourite quotes on that comes not even from dialogue, but from a line in the quest log for the Dark Knight 60-70 quest line: "He laments his fate, wishing he could go back and convince his former self not to place his trust in the Griffin...but if such things were possible, you wouldn't have a broken shield, now would you?"

There's also the second early-ARR NPC Adventurer party you can run into led by Dolorous Bear, his party dies in Copperbell Mine after you beat them to the punch at Sastasha and Tam-Tara Deepcroft. Talking to the remaining party, The Old Elezen and his daughter, the daughter will tell you how Dolorous Bear and his two companions rushed into the Mine unprepared and were quickly killed by the giants inside leaving her to wonder why the normally rational group would do such a thing and personally I believe that it was how we showed them up twice coupled with their desire to make a name for themselves that lead to their unfortunate deaths.

During Heavensward in Idyllshire there was this storyline that played out over the course of the expansion as the area was updated each patch and built into the zone we know today where a little girl was made an orphan, comforted by the goblins, taken in by a scholar, summons her own carbuncle, and eventually at the end is seen playing with the other children. All without a quest line or anything directly pointing it out, just sitting there for anyone who noticed. So cool the small touches FF14 does with it's storytelling.

The love struck healer that did all that she could and loved the wrong man, used and abused by all those around her and put into so much guilt of what happened to dive into whatever means she could to make a wedding happen with the man that she loved. This story as I went through the game really hit me and when I pull up that roulette and get one of the two dungeons I can't help but think what could have been. Stories like these are all over the game even if the MSQ isn't tugging your emotions enough you can find a variety of side quest that link to other events. Stories like this make the world feel more alive and not all these stories end in like Edda's some are just down right funny too. Thanks for covering this story and hope that other players get to experience it as well.

You know, my friends all kinda just passed up Tam Tara Hard without watching the cutscenes or anything, but I always figured there was a more tragic story behind it. I never got the chance to look into it further, but dang, thanks for this video or else I don't think I ever would've known.

Out of all the WoW content creators, I was the most excited to see Nobbel play for this reason alone! Your lore videos covering WoW were legit the whole reason I even started playing WoW in the first place and now I'm so hyped to see if you continue to make videos for FFXIV. I'm so excited man!! I'm glad you're enjoying the game!

Wow it's been years since I've seen your channel. I remember it covering a lot of WoW lore. I didn't know you covered FF 14 as well! I always thought this was an interesting one, esp with the ghost appearing in town

He honestly doesn't. He was trying it at the time, because WoW and its lore was in such a bad place at the time and everyone was trying FFXIV.

I couldn't be happier that this is where Nobbel is starting with his major FFXIV videos. I think of Edda's storyline as this game's equivalent to WoW's questlines for Morgan Ladimore, Stalvan Mistmantle, and Darrowshire. There's also some similar vibes early on in the MSQ if the player really pays attention and reads everything related to Haukke Manor.

This is honestly one of the most underrated side quest lines ive ever experienced. I stumbled upon this by ACCIDENT and boy let me tell you I wasnt ready. Then you get her husband's head as a mount!? Told my guild about it and theyve experienced it for the first time as well.

edda was the reason we got Reaper as job. She was one of the first reapsers so we should honor her sacrifice and play Reaper as best as we can

There are do many side stories that get missed by most, myself included. It'd be great if you kept doing these once in awhile

edda story and the original minor scions who died in the first empire raid have always fascinated me because of the way their story went. at the beginning you used to see them alot, as in all over the place to the point that you would keep an eye out for them to chat and see what's up just for lore building and a friendly face. until one day you didn't like edda because they died meaninglessly in a vary sub par dungeon basic dungion or walked in on their murdered corpses like the original scions. that was surprisingly heartbreaking because it felt like loosing a friend or at least an acquaintance you like talking to. but as we all know their story wasn't done and now every time we see them it makes us fear, not them as their not strong enough or around enough to put us in harms way but existential fear. every time they show up its personal because you couldn't save them, you failed and you know that fact and now they are some of the faces you see when you sleep.

You should have a look into the side quests in the ARR areas of the game. Been a while since I cleared them all but I know in Forgotten Springs and an area of Limsa Lominsa, you resolving quest chains in those areas actually has you recruit people for the Scions- right before the massacre. So if you’ve done the side quests, the bodies you collect are genuinely people you know and recruited instead of randoms

OH and the quests for Hildebrandt’s dad in Camp Bronzelake to obtain the Meteor Ring are also absolutely heartbreaking and add a lot of depth to his character. The sidequests in that area are juicy for ARR lore in general.

Nobbel makes his first non-WoW lore video. Truly the end of an era.
