Dry Corn Silage Disaster for Old New Holland

    The late planted corn (July 4) is cut and the silo has room. So let's top off the silo with this dry corn (June 10). I think we had ear jamming issues because the lower gathering chains were loose. Why were the lower gathering chains loose? probably from wear. And this was my big fear for why we put new chains on the previous head, then we buy a head to fit our row width and Bam, it all goes wrong. Good this this was close enough to being the last load.

    A short time fix is remove the broken knives and the knives opposite on the drum to balance then should be ok to finish

    Ok so the brandy new to you chopper is sick, when your shower is over get the green chopper hooked up and finish filling the silo. Overly dry silage corn, granted is not the most desireable silage but running water into the blower as you load the last of the dry silage will still cure just fine and make reasonable feed. As I recall you don't have a silo unloader so the green chopper made green feed so what is the diff. a full silo is a full silo? Let's roll !

    We had a gathering chain come off our Gehl snapper head and went through the chopper that had a screen in it. It was ugly but we put all new gather chains on and sharpened the knives and we were back at it. We took a big magnet that was off of a feed mill/grinder and went through the wagon and got most if not all the metal picked out of it. Unloaded the wagon onto the ground and went through it again with the magnet. We fed that load of earlage/snaplage up right away and had no problems. Good luck with the repair! We were fortunate to not break or bend any knives.

  • @BarnyardEngineering
    @BarnyardEngineering 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    OUCH! I'd recognize that sound anywhere. As much as I hate the rubber gathering belts on the IH chopper, when they get sucked in they pass harmlessly through the chopper. Still looking for a New Holland because at least you can get parts... We only finished chopping this year because of Dad's cat like reflexes on the head reverser. It popped a belt but he stopped the head before it went into the chopper.
    A few new knives, new shear bar, and the gathering chains off the narrow head, and she'll be right as rain again.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The narrow head is an older model and uses a different link for the lower gathering chains.
