There is something about a good sense of humor and a good attitude that can bring down walls and help us connect with others. In this talk from his 2016 presentation, Brad Wilcox relates a story of how he learned this lesson from an interaction his family had with Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
ABOUT BRAD WILCOX: Brad Wilcox grew up in Provo, Utah, except for childhood years spent in Ethiopia, Africa. As a young man, he served a mission for the Church in Chile. Brad earned a PhD from the University of Wyoming and is now an associate professor in the department of Teacher Education at BYU. Brad and his wife, Debi, have lived in New Zealand and Spain, where Brad directed Study Abroad programs for Brigham Young University. They also lived in Santiago, Chile, where Brad served as president of the Chile Santiago East Mission from 2003-2006; he has recently served as a member of the Sunday School general board. Brad and Debi are the parents of four children and reside in Provo, Utah.

Sometimes Brad Wilcox comes over as arrogant and eccentric. He probably appeals to Utah County members of the LDS Church, but he doesn't connect with a wider audience. I disliked his condescending tone and offhanded manner in that infamous Alpine fireside in 2022. It was really weird to see a top ranking LDS official getting red in the face, sweating, yelling, and calling people stupid. Your president, Dr. Nielson, gives a much better impression of kindness, gentleness, and love for everyone.

"One of the most fallacious doctrines originated by Satan and propounded by man is that man is saved alone by the grace of God; that belief in Jesus Christ alone is all that is needed for salvation," (Miracle of Forgiveness, Spencer W. Kimball, p. 206).

Hey Faye! Been a long time. That statement is absolutely true. Christ didn't come to save us in our sins, but from our sins! Because he is the author of our salvation, we must do as he commands, keep his commandments, receive all the ordinances of the Gospel, and endure to the end. These essential things dont save of in and of themselves, but they are part of the requirements the Lord has set forth, he alone being the only one to authorize such expectations.

I don’t think his joke is funny. He regularly uses humor to put down people that disagree with him or the church.

Build others? His misogynous statements during the Alpine youth fireside were denigrating. Shame on him!

I don’t find encouraging children to focus on marriage at such a young age to be humorous.
