    For a design introduced in 1957, the U-2 enjoys a unique distinction by still being in actual service. All hail Kelly Johnson and the other engineers for U-2 and SR-71!

    Hi Juan, I love the succinct and factual updates. You made me look, as I understood the U2 flight suits were necessary as it is needed to get oxygen into the system above about 50,000 feet. Instead, a quick Google confirmed that you were correct that it is a 'backup', though probably worth expanding on. A rapid decompress (something that is quite possible in an aircraft that people like to fling missiles toward) at 70,000 would result in nitrogen in the blood boiling essentially instantly, and causing death in seconds. So the suit is a "backup" that is required for any flight above normal airline flight levels. They use it all the time of course, since it is wired to all sorts of aircraft systems. The Dragon Lady is an amazing bird, and a testament to the designers of the day for it's amazing resilience and service during difficult times.

      Last I knew they still fly the U2 out of Beal AFB. That was a critical base in the SR71 days that many did not know much about. I drove by there a lot, and you could often see the U2s practice touch-and-go for pilot qualification. They also have drones and T-38 advanced trainers that NASA pilots qualified in.

    Lots of neighbors are Delta pilots where I live in south metro Atlanta, but one is is a retired USAF U2 driver. Me? I was an Army helicopter and fixed wing pilot who never flew higher than 10,00ft AGL and that was only to cool off due to the Nomex nylon flight suits we wore in Vietnam. I'm sure thankful that my son & family moved from the Lake Tahoe area to Reno a few years ago.

    As someone who spent most summers growing up at Lake Davis, I've been following the Fire progress for the last few days. I do think the fire did get away from them on the North East front as it blew through a decent sized meadow. At least it looks like they have been successful keeping it mostly north of the Lake.

  • @bozzieboy
    @bozzieboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The flooding in the Northeast wasn't as "sudden" as people suppose, in that it was well forecasted and well advertised, more than a day in advance that I know of. Some people are just not going to pay heed, no matter what.

    • @texleeger8973
      @texleeger8973 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The intensity, precip per hour, was underestimated. For example, 3.15 inches of rain fell in Central Park in one hour. an hourly rainfall record set only two weeks ago. Elsewhere, parts of NYC had 10-inch rainfalls. It is no surprise then that flash flooding on asphalt was deadly with underpasses flooded, autos submerged, subways inundated, and citizens swept to deaths. Yes, heavy precip was predicted. The resultant amounts and ultimate devastation were not.
      In the end, this storm followed a track, interacted with midlatitude jet stream vorticity induced uplift, and produced devastation over a large swath of the eastern USA very similar to another historical monster storm: Camille of 1969. In both Ida and Camille, more people were killed, not in the area of landfall, but in the northeast where unprecedented rainfall amounts and freshwater flooding proved catastrophic.

    • @bozzieboy
      @bozzieboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@texleeger8973 24 hours in advance, the Weather Service office in New York City issued a Flash Flood Watch which called for "3 to 5 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts." That's about as good as it's gonna get in terms of advance notice of a flash flood event, especially where such events are rare. In any flood or storm, post-mortem accounts claiming "it struck without warning" are invariably wrong.
      Also...even if (impossibly) the forecast accurately predicted exact rainfall totals and intensities, right down to the nearest apartment address, in any large population there are still going to be a lot of dumb people who will not react appropriately to safeguard their own lives. (Plenty of people also eschew vaccines during a pandemic. Whacha gonna do?)
      I still say the flood didn't strike as "suddenly" as all that, given the competent advance billing. Our Weather Service is a national treasure.

      Cessna 560 Citation XLS+(3560 feet required for takeoff at sea level) at Robertson airport CT (Runway length 3665 ft, elevation 200 ft). 3665-3560=105ft. Not a lot of margin for error.

    Juan,
    I live about 25 miles west of Boston. We got 4.1 inches of rain in approx 8 hours from remains of TS Ida (some areas in southern New England received over 8 inches of rain in that time - considered a '200 year event'). This is all on top of receiving over 5 inches of rain in August 2021 (remains of TS Fred and TS Henri) and just under 13 inches of rain in July 2021 (TS Elsa).
    Paul (in MA)

Makes me think about driving down this year, been to long! Pegasus when I first saw her, R A Hoover flying chase.... 10 years of vacation time in Reno well spent! Hope the rain starts early this fall, like September 21st.

    The trees will be reborn, the structures can be demolished and rebuilt, but life can never be replaced if lost...thank heavens there have been no lives lost (and touch wood won't be) as yet!!!! We sadly lost so many lives during our fires of 2019/2020 across Aus, my we never have a fire season like that again for a long long time...and may the same be the case for California, life is too precious!!!!
    Love your coverage of the fires Juan, and all subjects you decide to cover...can always be assured it will be a BS FREE ZONE and told as it is...long live the Blancolirio channel!!!! Cheers from Aus!!!!

    Climate changes perhaps ? Interesting and frankly upsetting that devastating weather events heat waves , wildfires, hurricanes and profound flood events following rain bombs….that these can be discussed which is important but not the fact that these extreme wearier events are symptomatic of our worlds climate undergoing dramatic and accelerated heating.
    The question why do this self censorship as it just maintains an unhealthy denial when the science is clear. By all estimates such weather we have seen as described is also happening in other parts of the world and things regarding the frequency of such extreme weather events will not only become more frequency but have more intensity.
    If you have doubts about climate change then I leave this with you …”what do you understand about what’s happening in Arctic and indeed the Antarctic and with regards to the Arctic what will happen when the reflective ice cover is lost and new sea ice formation during winter is functionally lost. Presuming your intelligent source TH-cam and listen to actual climate scientists discuss these matters. Focussing on how the jet stream is formed and why it’s significant if you cannot answer such questions at present then you are not informed and your opinion one way or the other is lacking merit.
    So please take up this challenge, as it’s that important!

    • @fraser372
      @fraser372 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Paul Simonson depends where your interests lay …cognitive biases ..and dissonance …also there are actors who for no clearly definable reason choose to be contrarians …however the recent UN IPPC REPORT is a study involving thousands of scientists who are questioning serious science based research which those research papers were peer reviewed prior to publishing are again scrutinised word by word looking for poor study criteria and such or false assumptions from poor data sets .
      All in all a very rigorous process. As opposed to a few contrarians that make regular appearances selling a product that people who are deniers wish to hear. So does one put their faith in a few actors who often skew a poorly worded or ambiguously worded paper in order to draw the wrong conclusion or indeed wilfully draw false conclusions from a study where lay people that’s people who are non scientists may be easily swayed.
      Science is a rigorous process and demands a professional respect.
      We can choose our opinions however we are not at liberty to be selectively dishonest by choosing only those facts that support ones views. We can only build a world view with the facts at hand while remaining prepared to change ones views when relevant facts present themselves that say otherwise.
      On a personal note in this stage of world wide events transpiring to remain at odds to the science of climatology should raise a personal concern as I find such intellectual indifference to be frankly pathological considering the seriousness that scientists and THE IPPC have outlined. I would suggest taking a sabbatical and spend serious time studying both sides of opinions and world views.
