Hi Sam, love the video. I'm a complete novice, not just at Johnny Cakes! Everything was going great, until the water! No advice as to how much, added some, too little, added more, too much! Tried to add some flour, just got into a mighty mess! Going to try again.... But don't underestimate my (and perhaps others) ignorance! :)
Where are these updated measurements? I'm uk based and our cups are all different sizes so need exact measurements to create. Can they not be updated in the summary?

They are called ‘journey cakes’ Locals gave/sold these to travelers that were leaving the island as a snack for their journey. The word journey is pronounced ’Johnny’ by the locals. So…if these originated in North America they would be pronounced Journey cakes.
Sooooo, I tried this twice. The second time, however, I was feeling for pastry so I added an over-ripe banana. Delicious!! Like banana fritters but more fun to eat because of the texture differences outside vs inside. Next I will be doing a batch with coconut and my life will be complete ... well, maybe after I drizzle the coconut one with pineapple compote. What more mi coulda want outta life??? Your videos always give me ideas!
You're on a culinary adventure! Wow better than me girl, I like it. So touched and encouraged to hear how you're enjoying your cooking experiments. Take pics and tag me on Instagram if you can. 🙏
That is tge great thing about food... so much we can experiment with. Different colors, flavors, crispiness or tenderness, different combinations etc. Awesome!!
Lovely recipe and nice video instructions. One day I'll try adding the cheese in mines. Thanks a million for sharing your talent with me and my friends in the US Virgin Islands.
Thank you for that! I would love to make more videos for you so let me know if you have any other requests. And please share my channel as I'm trying to grow...every share counts
@Chef Samantha George for the baking is it better to use a flat pan like yours? Or is it also possible to fry the Johnny Cakes in a deeper pan? And the only thing you need to add in the pan is a lot of oil?
None!! That's why you didn't hear me mention it. Actually if you go back and watch you'll hear when I said not to use milk and butter, and I also explained why it doesn't make for good Johnny cakes
Hmmm what could that be? Do you use self rising flour or make the mix from scratch? Sugar should be in the mix which helps with browning...otherwise low and slow is good to not cook the outside of the dumplings too quickly leaving the centre raw. When the dunplings are taken out after frying they usually darken in colour and crisp up more. Try frying only 2 to 3 at a time
North America? No sweetie, we came from Africa with this knowledge. Have you been to Africa to see all the "johnny cake" and "Fried dumpling" and "brufoot", etc.? Lawdamercy, next you will say Ackee come from Australia, not West Africa...

Gotcha! I completely understand. I will update the comments with a complete recipe
I agree same thing happened to me when I got to the water. It’s still coming out wrong 😅 for me

This is like a staple on every true Jamaican breakfast menu! Love it!
So good
Y’all stole it from the Natives their real name is “Shawnee cakes”
My girl, I made this twice now my family loved them!!!
This is great news! Keep cooking!

Every time I make Johnny cakes. I use this video for reference. Love this recipe.
Awesome. Glad you found it. Anything else you wanna see?
I like butter in mine, it makes it crispy! Bakes as we call it in Dominica 🇩🇲
Yes bake is different though lol
@@SamsFoodChroniclesI think it’s the same in 🇩🇲 only ours bigger. Yet I like the size you made. Thanks for sharing.
Spotted you in Mega yesterday so i was reminded to comment. Most successful I have ever been following recipes. Bravo
Oh wonderful!! Wow what a feat! So neat. If you're Instagram you can share this. Show off your dumplings please. 😆

Aw great! Now you'll enjoy the best dumplings for dayyyssss
That is a nice tip to push in the middle
I would almost consider it mandatory lol
Thanks chef!
No problem!
Johnny cakes and stewed chicken with carrots and peppers is in my top 5 fav comfort foods.
I love it with salt fish cord with steam cabbage
Herring is great too
I’m resting my dough now! Ready to fry!
Breakfast sounds like it's going to be awesome!
@Chef Samantha George for the baking is it better to use a flat pan like yours? Or is it also possible to fry the Johnny Cakes in a deeper pan? And the only thing you need to add in the pan is a lot of oil?
Better deep fried - or at least half submerged
Love the video thanks but is the flour on the inside supposed to be white?
Yes, correct!
@SamsFoodChronicles I thought my was not properly cooked through
You didn't mention the milk and the butter in the list of ingredients. How much milk, how much butter?
None!! That's why you didn't hear me mention it. Actually if you go back and watch you'll hear when I said not to use milk and butter, and I also explained why it doesn't make for good Johnny cakes
Nice. I'm trying to find Dutch pots here in Canada
Can use a cast iron pan or a thick stainless steel base pot!
Excellent presentation, your vybz👍🏾real good energy! Bless🤲🏾
What liquid do I use and how much?
Just water. Nothin else
I guess I am now motivated to go make the Curacao Johhny Cakes video
Why not?! Rock on! 🤩
Sis, I REALLY check 4 your blogs. 📕🖤🇩🇲✊🏾🌞🌙✨🌍💯💯💯💯🌹🌹🌹
2024 gonna be publishing a lot more!!
DA in the house. Her recipe is simple and well explanatory.
I am so signing up! Gonna be an expert by next year, I promise 😊😊
Yay. I'll check on you then too to hold you to it!
How much butter?
ZERO!!!! No butter allowed in delicious Johnny cakes
Bwoy I Post Dumpling Stress Disorder! My problem is keeping the temperature of the oil stable. They’re fluffy but they ain’t no ‘browning’
Try frying only 2 to 3 at a time
Also what kind of pan are you using?
i now make perfect dumpling, me hungry....
And it's super addictive
I don't use butter think butter makes it oily
Yea agreed. Same reason I don't either
Lol that's me SMH, dem have mi business outa road lol.....
Dog see you and run?
No butter?
No!!! Avoid
Question, I am trying to make this recipe, are you using kosher salt? Cause that may change your ratio of salt to flour.
Yes. Kosher is less salty than table salt so I'd increase it by half tsp per 1 cup of flour.
I used sea salt in this recipe
Thats one thing about black people we have no problem giving others credit but its rarely the other way around with other race and cultures
What a peculiar concept to bring up here lol
@@darlingtonjonesimagery9247 not really she gave credit to the origins of johnny cakes she said north america.
@@abortionismurder4265 I get you but we're talking about food not politics
@@darlingtonjonesimagery9247 thats too bad. I said what I said so deal sweetie.
Have you tried the recipe?
johnny cakes good tough though.
You probably kneaded too much. It's supposed to be soft and light. Crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. What do you think?
Everything is good, but the baking soda ratio needs less baking soda. I used a high quality baking soda, but it was overwhelming
Oh I used baking powder. Not soda.
@@SamsFoodChronicles OMG - I confess I’m an idiot lol
Haha no it happens. There's people that write entire articles about the difference between baking powder and baking soda
All y’all 😂
You're fried dumplings are Johnny cakes and they are not originally from Jamaica.
Thanks
Lol
