There is a bunch of pacific island that were under Dutch occupation back in the day and still speak and teach our language there. But because they have their own accent it sounds completely different. It’s like a tropical Dutch.

I moved from London to Amsterdam in 2019 and my first apartment was in the Bijlmer, near Kraaiennest. The spirit of the community in that area reminded me closely reminded me of that in London and the food was excellent; all cooked by locals with a passion for their gemeenschap and their culture. Veel liefde en veel succes voor het toekomst!

When I first met my first group of Dutch Caribbean friends, all of them were going wild over something I had never ever heard of 'Johnny Cakes'. To this day I still have not knowingly eaten one. I guess coming from the UK, anything with the word 'Johnny' conjures up thoughts of a contraceptive.

Indigenous communities of North America and the Caribbean are credited with the invention of this dish, which is why variations of it exist most prominently in the American South and Northeast, as well as Jamaica, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and, curiously, Australia. These thin, fried cakes are made with cornmeal, and their history goes back to the early Native Americans. While the origin of the name remains uncertain, many historians believe they were called 'Shawnee cakes' by the Pawtuxet Indians, and English settlers mispronounced it as 'jonnycakes.Johnny cakes have been a staple of American cuisine for hundreds of years. It was a recipe learned from the Native Americans who cooked these small cornmeal cakes baked over hot ashes.

Johnny Cake is not made of cornmeal, South American Arepa is made of cornmeal.
Johnny Cake is made of flour.
