    The affordable version of the Scott Whitley designed, SWB-1 short scale bass guitar. Available in solid ash or mahogany, passive or active, fretted or fretless and in a left-handed version.
    The SWB-1 Standard is the first truly professional, versatile, modern-sounding short scale bass at an affordable price.

    I have the second bass, the mahogany one.
    Scott played it a lot, toured it with Big Country.
    Yet when I got it the frets were little worn.
    This means he has a light touch.
    As you'd expect from a top pro who often moves around the neck very fast.
    It's the weekend pub rockers who dig in and grind down the frets, despite playing much fewer notes than people like Scott!

    This bass is pretty much my dream bass. Short scale without losing quality and tone, and a unique design. I know it's modeled after the alembic but you never see regular gigging folk with them since they're quite expensive.
    I would love to order one soon, but whenever I go to the site, it says they're not available. I've had my eye on these videos for a few months now. Plus I'm nervous to see how they will come to California.

    I've been looking for a short scale bass for about a week now, after playing a friends Fender mustang. The appeal for me was the ease of play for more technical playing, like Primus, Rush, Etc. After watching your video on the rascal, I was disappointed at the price of it, because it didn't offer much. Then, I randomly stumbled upon this video. It has EVERYTHING I WANT. Mahogany Body, Active, 24 frets, natural colors. You've made my dream bass! They ship to America, right?

      +Whatsit tooyah Hi there - humbled that you love the bass so much!!
      I got together with my friends at Chowny bass a few months ago an we improved the bass even further. Here's a link to a new video I made talking about the improvements (and yep - shipped to America!!)...

    Might be imagination but mahogany for me has more mids and sounds warmer whereas ash sounds a little scooped but has a tight and defined bottom.

    I greatly admire Birdsong "Corto" basses but they are absurdly over priced. This bass is perfect. Can't wait to get one soon.

    It's an achievement to make a short bass which sounds even across all notes, and has a good variety of tones. But you say that other short basses are either for learners or mushy/muddy. An EB-3 is not necessarily muddy -- Andy Fraser was never muddy -- and it has great character with its multi-layered neck and alnico-humbucker richness and subtlety. You'll do well with the SWB-1, and you deserve to. But the EB-3 is the Stradivarius of solid body, short-scale basses, and might never be equalled in tonal quality.

    I've now had the bass for a week or so, and have used it in rehearsal and done a little bit of recording with it. I like it very much - a very tight bottom end and lots of tonal variety. For blues I've dialled in full bass and full treble cut, but the jury is still out on whether the single neck pickup or both pickups is the way to go. I'm very impressed with the solo neck pickup sound, who makes these?. For the Space Rock combo I've boosted bass and treble, and it cuts through very nicely with a pick. Tuners get the thumbs up, lots more micro tuning than my Mustang. The neck is lovely, no sharp fret edges. Strings have some good tension to them - are these D'addario? - it would be helpful to know which style and gauge?

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey - thanks so much for the update!! The strings are D'addario.I'll check with Stephen which gauge...
      Thanks again!! :-)

    can you advise me which model to get, passive or active, mahogany or ash, I want something to sound like Jaco's... with a possibility of doing some slap from time to time. thank you

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Eli! I like both but tend to go for my active models more personally. You can get that Jaco thing for sure, plus more varied tones can be had using the 2-band EQ.

    Scott. I love your vids! I wanna learn bass now! Question. Is a short scale a better choice for funk? Or does the scale of the bass not really affect slap style? Cheers!! Gonna binge watch all your vids now!!

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jeffrey.
      Short-scale isn't necessary to play slap etc. but in many ways it can make it (and bass playing in general) easier due to a slimmer, shorter neck.
      Thanks again Jeffrey,
      Scott.

    Hi Scott. I'm in the market for a Short Scale Bass. I definitely want a Chowny CHB-1, but in addition to the CHB-1, your SWB-1 looks super cool and fun to play. My concern is the pickups are angled and look like they stick out from the E string by almost an inch as opposed to a little over 1/2 inch on my Jazz Bass (or my P Bass or Stingray for that matter). I also noticed you only rest your thumb on the Pickup when you play the E string, otherwise you rest your thumb on the E string. This is not an option for my playing style. Is it comfortable resting your thumb on the corner of the pickup and reaching the D and G strings? I'm in Canada so I can't play before purchase. Any insight from you would be helpful - Regards,

    Which model would be closest to what you are playing: SWB-1 Signature, Pro, Anderton’s?

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are the nearest to my original one, but with few improvements: www.andertons.co.uk/chowny-swb1-bass-in-trans-white
      The Pro and forthcoming deluxe are both higher spec'd basses. But the one linked above is what I've played most of the time.

  • @MontyDodge
    @MontyDodge 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Is it a standard string gauge? and is there a particular reason the pickups are on a slant or is that just for show?

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Jon Don They are a medium gauge, short-scale string set (44-105 or thereabouts). The pickups are angled to give the higher/thinner strings a fuller tone, whilst the lower strings remain more focused and punchy.

    Hi Scott i'm having a lot of trouble picking between passive Ash or passive Mahogany and i'd take your help (or Chowny's) as I really want to get this. What would help you help me? I'm more of a Jazz, Hip-Hop and RnB person. I like the bass sound big and heavy if that helps, if not tell me what would!

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably not as the neck is made to suit the spacing. It's extremely comfortable though at 18mm and I've not met anyone who's struggled to adjust immediately.

    what is the string spacing on that like compared to a jazz bass. I dont have long fingers and was looking for something a little less taxing on my wrists to play.

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Harry D. String spacing is 18mm at the bridge, that's 1mm less than Fender's 19mm. It's not too unfamiliar, but instantly feels quicker and easier Harry.
