    This video captures my first experience of using GHS "Super Steels" short-scale/medium scale bass strings. I was completely blown away with them and would recommend them to any short-scale players looking for the ultimate stainless roundwound string.

      @@ScottWhitley Scott, I am very interested in making the Chowny SWB-1 my Bass. How does it handle low E string tuned down like Drop D? Trying to avoid the "Dead" E string short scale thing... Is the neck width similar to Fender C thin? Is your Bass available in the US? Last question: Big differences in Mahogany versus Solid Ash?

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Geoffrey - apologies for the delay, I'll reply to your other messages in a moment too. :-)
      • Drop D it totally doable - you need to lighten your touch a little, but imho works just fine!
      • The neck doesn't taper nearly as much as a Jazz, it's a little narrower at the 12th and higher than a Jazz.
      • The profile is similar to a jazz, certainly towards the nut end. VERY comfortable.
      • Not a huge difference at all between the different wood types.
      Hope that helps - I'll get to your other questions now... :-)
      Scott.

      @@ScottWhitley Thanks for your very thoughtful replies sir! I've been doing massive Scott Whitley and SWB research lately. About to jump on a SWB Pro (Walnut, only color available in Pro) as it appears the best tone and feel are more important than the Walnut look I don't love :( Thanks for all you do. Maybe one day you will get to perform The Seer with Kate Bush!

    Hi Scott, I've just discovered your channel. I play a 74 Gibson Grabber and I've been out in the wilderness after 2 sets of iffy Rotosounds led me to a set of D'Addario which was a bad mistake on my part.
    I've been looking at either going back to GHS Boomers (and reliving my heavy metal yoof!) Or saving up for the DR Hi Beams. Your video has just solved my dilemma, thank you and I have subscribed to your channel. Hope you're staying well and keeping sane through the CoronaVirus madness.

    That thick low E (106) is great for this shorter scale bass.. And the stainless steel might be a bit more cutting than the nickel wound is great for the low E..
    Some roundwound low E at 95 or 100 can be a bit indistinct on a 30" mustang bass and give you a little problem on the 3. to 7. fret as Scott mentions.. It is a matter of scale lenght and string thickness and tension.. On a 30" fender mustang bass I am pretty sure I would go flatwounds as those have more tension at similar string thickness than rounds..

    Isn’t it fantastic GHS (with the help of Scott) manage to update there short scale length from 32” to 32,75” on most of their strings but not on the Super Brights, which ironically Scott is reviewing and raving in this video.
    GHS, please would you also update the super brights with their unique and wonderful ,044/,106 gauge. Thank you.

    Hey Scott, I noticed you used the medium scale pack in this video and that they seem to just barely fit. Do you happen to know if the medium scale strings would fit the squier short scale jag, or would the strings be too long resulting in the winds wrapping around the tuning post? I'm hoping they can because short scale sets are seriously neglected by string companies.

  • @Batvolt
    @Batvolt ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Scott it's me again...does GHS make strings that fit the SWB Pro Bass? I need a bass string that clears the nut before the taper starts. As you may know the scale of the SWB Pro is 33 and 1/4" from bridge to nut. I would really appreciate a reply from you. Love your playing! Cheers.

    Hi Scott. Amazing work you have put out there!! Do you prefer steel or nickel for your own sound or not fussed?

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, James - very kind and much appreciated.
      I prefer stainless steel for the powerful attack, but I'm always happy to use Nickel when steels aren't available in the gauges I like.
      I actually prefer the feel of Nickel, which I think of as more clean/hi-fi sounding if that makes sense. Plenty of highs, but more crisp and sparkly, rather than in-your-face.

    Great playing. I build custom short scale basses. Just as a hobby. 30" scale. The E string always seems to be loose and flabby sounding. I definitely need more tension. I like rounds. These basses are Fender style as actually I use the Squire Bronco neck. Any recommendations. Thanks brother.

    string gauges ?

  • @adnap
    @adnap 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What if your bass has a 24” inch scale ?
    Do you just buy normal short scale strings and cut them shorter ?
    Should they be light, medium, or heavy for proper tension?
    I’d appreciate the help.
    Thanks!

    • @ScottWhitley
      @ScottWhitley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd need heavier to keep the tension. You may get away with cutting short scale strings down, but some of the thick part of the string might have tow rap around the peg.
      Sorry I can't be of more help, Adnap,
      Scott.

    Hi Scott 👍👍 I'm currently on a little 6 string guitar to 4 string bass conversion 🙈🙈, I was just wondering is it possible to strip back the outter layers of the strings to fit through the hole in the tuning peg ??? Hope u can help me 👍👍

    • @simaojoseph
      @simaojoseph 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you would risk to ruin the whole string. Also you should try a tail-piece near the edge of the guitar, maybe so, you could find a string that’s short enough to enter the lower key peg. Ideally, it also would help a bunch if the guitar has a reverse headstock. In general the problematic string is the lowest; it is to thick to bend around the peg without showing failure signs, that’s why they are tapered and made to size.

  • @taylerm92
    @taylerm92 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Scott, I bought a SS because my fingers aren't stressed as much, but i prefer the tightness of the strings on a full scale bass. Is there a string brand and gauge you would recommend to have less flop in the strings (mostly the E string)?
