    How long does it take to execute an immersive 360 scan on average?

    • @Matterport
      @Matterport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      To answer that I'll have to set some guidelines. Let's say the average model is 60 scan positions and a 1500 square foot furnished residence. In that case, using Matterport Axis, an experienced scan tech would be able to complete the capture process in about 45min.

    It looks like the phone sags a bit in the stand. A magsafe attachment for iPhone 12 or newer might alleviate that a bit since it would support the phone right in the center. It would be cool if it also gave the option to charge the phone while taking photos.

    The two biggest issues with the Matterport Axis from my experience are overheating with an iPhone 12 Pro Max from Lidar scanning a complete house and the time it takes to scan with Lidar. I'm hoping with the iPhone 14 Pro the scans will be somewhat faster and the overheating won't be as often. My iPhone 12 Pro Max will start to get hot when I'm about 50% through scanning a 1,500sqft home, then a message comes up in the Matterport App saying the scanning has been paused until the phone cools down. This can take 10-20 minutes unless you cool down the phone by putting it on a portable ice pack for a cooler (no joke, I've done). I will say the results have been very good from what I've done but the overheating with my phone and time it takes to do lidar scans with the 12 Pro are frustrating. Simple scans (no lidar) are much faster and do not cause the phone to get so hot to pause the scans. I do love the product but I do think phones need to get faster and cooler to make this more efficient for Lidar scans. No fault on Matterport on these two issues. I've gotten way better scans with the Axis than walking around with my iPhone hand held to scan for 'virtual dollhouse' tours.

      I use a phone cage and mount a battery that powers a fan cooler with MagSafe charging on an iPhone 15 pro max. It charges my phone while cooling and no heating issues. I use Neewer branded cage and cooler as it’s the right fit. The fan cooler also has 3 speed settings and setting 1 is enough to cool and save battery. I can scan on lidar for over 2.5 hours while listening to k-pop for a large space.

    Does an iPhone's (and some Android model's) LIDAR capability help or is it even utilized? This week, we got an Axis for the law school I work for and I have a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G (no LIDAR) and I was curious if I should be borrowing my boss's iPhone (or have my wife upgrade her iPhone, as it's a free available option for our account) for scans lol. Although, realigning scans isn't available yet on iPhone, so each platform has their limitations.
    Also, a suggestion if possible: I'd like to be able to turn off the camera while I'm editing a map/scan, I think it will help cool down my phone and stop battery drainage. I get a warning it's getting too hot when I'm sitting there editing the map (not scanning), and the battery lowers considerably since the camera's on non-stop in the background. Thanks :)

    • @Matterport
      @Matterport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ryan,
      LiDAR will help improve the measurement accuracy a bit in the area it's projected. Meaning, the ultra-wide lens on your camera and the iPhones has a wider field of view than the LiDAR so you still end up with a section at the top and bottom of the capture point without LiDAR data. The tradeoff is speed vs measurement improvement. Without LiDAR the scan is quite a bit faster, but depth data is 100% on Cortex to figure out. With LiDAR you're still using Cortex, but providing it with actual depth data to improve its calculations.
      As for the camera usage, this is news to me. I was not aware the camera is in use when one is not actively capturing a scan point. I've sent your feedback to the team.

      Hi David, The placement of the portal or pin of a 360 View in your model does not depend on the direction your phone is facing when you start the rotation. The solution here is to simply edit the 360 View in Workshop. Here's a video that overviews exactly how to do that. Sorry about the audio - th-cam.com/video/UCY0BrrGOxU/w-d-xo.html

      We're working on it, but not yet through Matterport. That being said, 3rd party dwg providers would be able to manually convert the assets Matterport does provide and get you a dwg file. At this time DWG assets can only be created from models created by a Matterport Pro series camera or Leica BLK360.

    How much time does using this method take vs a matterport 2?

    • @Matterport
      @Matterport  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on the space being captured. Each scan position takes about the same amount of time, assuming you're not scanning with LiDAR when using Axis. Also assuming you're not using the "Complete Scan" mode, which requires 2 rotations and manually pivoting the phone between those rotations.
      So, Simple Scan and no LiDAR on Axis Vs the Pro2. The Pro2 is going to be a bit more forgiving when it comes to alignment and gives you the flexibility to move a bit more between scan positions. For that reason, I would say the Pro2 will likely scan the same area a bit faster than Axis.

  • @sharcenergy9642
    @sharcenergy9642 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a misleading tutorial!! They dont show that after clicking the button you need to adjust the phone angle mid-capture, which totally defeats the purpose of this being a one-click capture solution.

    • @Matterport
      @Matterport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is only necessary if you choose the "Complete" capture option. The phone in the tutorial is an iPhone 12 Pro Max with an ultra wide angle lens. Therefore, the "Simple" capture option is recommended because it only requires one pass instead of two and no phone tilting between passes.

    What formats can you export the models?

    • @Matterport
      @Matterport  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jouna,
      Depending on the camera used to capture the model, you can export derivative assets such as CAD or BIM files, E57, XYZ, OBJ, or an SKX file for use with Xactimate used mostly for insurance repair estimation. Regardless of the camera used, you can always get a PDF, PNG or SVG floor plan file.
      As for the 3D model itself, there's no way to download it because there's no way to view it without using Showcase. Unlike a video that's just one file, Matterport Digital Twins are comprised of hundreds if not thousands of files that require Matterport's Showcase viewer to make sense of them all so that you end up with a single 3D model.

You can bring the OBJ file into Revit using the free Revit plugin and create your BIM assets there. The question of whether the accuracy is high enough really depends on your use case and what you need.

    What about "Options"/capture settings?     • @Matterport
      @Matterport  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Scott. With the 13 Pro you have an Ultra Wide Angle lens and with that, I would stick to a simple scan and probably wouldn't worry about using LiDAR since it will slow you down a bit. That being said, I'd play around with the LiDAR a bit to see if you think the extra time spent is worth it. Meaning, scan your living room with LiDAR and scan it again without. Notice the time difference and then process both models. Use the measurement tool to compare the two and see for yourself whether you feel it was worth the extra time "on site".
      As for 3D vs 360 Capture, all indoor scans you want included as part of the 3D model/Digital Twin, you should use the 3D setting. If you need a pano of detached or outdoor areas you're not able to link using the 3D scans, that's when adding a 360 Capture comes in handy. For example, a pano of the backyard, front yard, etc.

If you're using an ultra-wide lens and it's a typical promote use case such as with real estate, I personally don't feel most ceilings are interesting enough to justify a complete scan. Maybe if you want to show off a chandelier for those scan positions in that area you can take the time to do a few complete scan points. But, other than that, I would save time and stick with a single-pass scan. Of course, this is my opinion and you should always do what's right for you and your client.

    can i use an older iphone with one camera lens

    • @Matterport
      @Matterport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Zach. While older iPhones are not considered a "recommended" phone, may are supported as far back as the iPhone SE. Because this phone does not have a 0.5x ultra-wide lens, however, more images are required to complete the 360° rotation and you may want to consider using the Complete scan option, which captures 2 360° rotations with the phone tilted down for the first rotation and up for the second to capture more of the spherical image.

      @@zachneven5496 This blog has a list of links to the same home captured with each of the supported 360 cameras and iPhone 12 Pro Max. You can use this to compare the quality of each camera. The right camera to use really depends on the purpose of the digital twin. If measurement accuracy is not a concern, the 360 cameras are great and very fast. The advantage to access is the cost - assuming you don't have to upgrade your phone.

    Let's say I want to use this as a spherical pano head with a better zenith. Can I tilt it beyond 15 degrees (with the warning) and still automate shooting serval shots

    • @Matterport
      @Matterport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The image capture won't trigger if the white dot is not within the circle. So, while you can tilt the phone as much as you want, the Capture app won't work without those two targets aligned. You can reduce the blurred zenith, even if you have an ultra-wide lens, by using the Complete scan option. This will have Axis pause after the first 360 is complete so you can tilt the phone up, then unpause to capture the 2nd 360.

    I'm having issues with Android. Keeps warming up after a few minutes. Low memory, but the camera is just as good as an iPhone. Main lens can take 45 mb photo. I wonder if I should invest in iPhone 11 for the sole purpose of 3d or buy a Ricoh Theta z1? Can the Rico be mounted on motorized mount for smartphone? I don't know if I want to use my personal smart phone for this type of business.

    • @Matterport
      @Matterport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jose, I think you can pick up an iPhone 12 for less money than a Ricoh Z1 these days. The image quality of the iPhone with Axis will be a bit better than the Z1, but the Z1 doesn't require you to get Axis and the scan process is much faster. Check out this blog for a quality comparison between the different camera option - matterport.com/blog/how-select-right-camera-job

      Hi, Matterport Axis is not like a gimbal because it must remain on a tripod throughout the scanning process. What Axis allows you to do is calibrate and align your phone's camera with the rotation axis to improve alignment in the pano and between scan points. Not to mention, of course, it also greatly increases the speed and ease of capture. Axis, however, is not designed to be handheld the way a gimbal would be in order to improve the smoothness of a shot.

    Iphone lidar raises too high temperature value

    • @Matterport
      @Matterport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using LiDAR does require more processing power and the phone will run hotter as a result. If your phone is running hot, you may need to pause a bit more between capture points. Keep in mind, the advantages of using LiDAR are better alignment outdoors and improved measurement accuracy for indoor captures. If you don't need either of those, feel free to capture without LiDAR to keep your phone running cooler.

      Yes, it can regardless of the time of day.
