Very clear and concise ! A very useful summary - I'd love to see something similar for the Scottish line through the period from 1066 through to James VI & I - that's almost as convoluted!
I'd love to see you do a series of 'short subjects'. Addressing the most popular, or frequent historical questions that your fans have. EX: what's the deal with the repetitive names of kings? Could they not come up with any other than John/Henry/Edward/George? Was there a reason for this? Did the printing press change the way a Monarch ruled? What court languages were actually spoken in the succeeding dynasties?
Me too! I always am like why does the song start at William. And she cleared that up a bit for me in this video. But I'd love to know more about the earlier ones.
I often had wondered why Henry the 7th had been accepted despite his tenuous claim to the throne so the explanation of trial by ordeal being accepted as God's will was enlightening. Thanks for that.
Also the king he killed was not thought of well for reasons understandable (having been responsible for the death of a more popular king's children) and questionable (his looks/disability). Regardless, that makes the next king a little easier to swallow
@ashmeadowphoenix we shouldn’t forget the power of the victor to be able with blacken the name of the losers Richard’s bones were found and analysed and the hunched back was found to be more of a curvature of the spine and as for the princes nothing was ever proved, the boys mother was apparently on good terms with Richard and Henry’s own mother had access and motive !
In all honesty after quarter of a century of civil war England would have accepted a ham sandwich as King. Many were willing to overlook Henry's dubious claim due to the fact he had married Elizabeth of York and the alternative was descending yet again into disorder and chaos.
Thank you for this marvelous romp through our kings and queens! I personally loved it that you gave exact dates (day and month) of their reigns. Your videos are such a treat to watch.
Dr. Kat, I am a seamstress with an associates. When in school (a long time ago) I remember learning about colors and who could and couldn't wear them. How they indicated status and such. Thank you for the video. If you get around to it, I would like to know about all the people they had to skip over to get to Sophia/George I, and how those people responded to being banned from the English crown. Seems like it could be an interesting video about how the monarchy could have gone.
Yes!!! I'm always hearing there were, like, 30 or more people ahead of him, & I wonder who the heck they all were! My monarchy book lists one: Sophia's elder sister Louisa Hollandine, Abbess of Maubuisson- definitely too Catholic, lol! And the current representatives of the Stuart lineage are descended from Charles I's daughter Henrietta Anne, who married Philippe, Duc d'Orleans, brother of Louis XIV, so ofc they would've been Catholic too.

What Deborah K said! The Lionheart didn't do much for his kingdom apart from costing them a lot of money to fuel his crusading habit so why is he so 'good' and John so 'bad'?

As a Canadian (geeky teenage) history buff, I memorized the British succession from 1066 to present - so this episode was great fun for me - I loved hearing it.
My husband always asks what your most recent video is and it’s wonderful to take these walks through guided by you. Our conversations during the videos sound something like: "this is the king who was ruling in (insert historical movie)" lol it helps him 🤷♀️
I can almost feel your holding back from adding the circumstances of some of the unfortunates who um, er, lost the position of King of 🇬🇧 England. What a motley crue of characters and what glorious theatre they've brought us ever since! SO Love your videos - how intelligent, tactful and FAIR you are where it's needed ... and what a fun way you have in tactfully remaining politically correct, yet giving us The Look ... ha!
Oh my goodness, I ‘liked’ the video before even going through it. What a good decision that was. The timeline and connections are so confusing, but now I have something to refer to. The family tree visuals were very helpful. I had to rewind a bunch of times and am still a little confused, to be honest, but I can always replay. Can you do a similar breakdown of the lineage before William The Conqueror? Even a brief overview would help.
Before William the Bastard succession was dependent on the Witan and while having a “claim” via inheritance was useful it wasn’t essential, a powerful Earl with support could claim the throne as Harold Godwinson did and he was chosen over Edgar the Atheling (the actual heir of the Confessor).
Thank you! I've scoured the family tree several times and got confused when succession jumped around between cousins. I've learned a lot from you and am very interested in the British Royal family and their history.
I can't believe that it is a year ago that you made the announcement of the birth of your son! Congratulations on his first birthday! It is apt, I think, to make a video of sons and daughters this week.
That made me giggle. They thought you'd been away but you've been here all along... I guess it's nice to be missed even if you haven't left! Happy birthday to the most important man in your life, the big 01! I know you will treasure every moment, they go so fast!
Excellently clear video that lays out all of the regnal lines since 1066 plus a few bits of context as to why certain individuals got the throne and others didn't. Wonderful! 2013 was when they decided that it was going to be based purely on primogeniture? About bloody time. Took them long enough.... I would love to see a video on the kings and monarchs that took power before 1066! It could even be a series if it takes too long. I know that era is a bit convoluted and I don't know how good records are. Still, would be fascinating! As always, love your channel and I look forward to each installment. Thank you!
Another excellent presentation! You, dear Doctor Kat, are the absolute best historian I have found plus your presentation skills are wonderful. A cup tea and and one of your visits starts my day off in the best possible way.🤗
When the movie 'The King' came out I went down the Kings of England rabbit hole because while I knew from a google search he was meant to represent King Henry V somehow it was unsatisfactory not to understand where he stood in the line. So then you're into the War of the Roses and you can't figure out why Hendry VIII claimed a link back to some other king unless you begin to know the names of the kings before him and suddenly you're six feet deep in Henrys, Richards, Edwards - Tudors, Hanovers, and Windsors and it's been three weekends and dozens of tabs to Wikipedia before you sort it all out and finally understand where Henry V came into things Needless to say I found this fascinating - thank you so much - it is always a joy to hear you talk.
As an American, it was nice to see how the Royal Family of various times came through them. One thought I had was, if Edward VIII had remained on the throne and given up Wallis Simpson, but either never married or, if he married an acceptable bride but there were no children, would Elizabeth II have been put on the throne or someone else?
I’ve really enjoyed this video! I’ve always been fascinated with the line of descent of our Kings and Queens and the family tree in general, so this summarises it together wonderfully! I look forward to your next video! Have you done a video about Eleanor of Aquitaine before? I think she would be a fascinating queen to focus on!
When studying history it was always difficult keeping track of the various monarchs. This video is beautifully clear. I think you could sell the set of family trees.
I'm a foreigner and never had proper schooling in English/British history (apart from the greatest hits like 1066, war of roses, henry VII, elisabeth, cromwell etc). This video is awesome because in my mind the rulers were more removed from each other than this video proves. For a long time we had free election of a king in my country, so seeing this family tree and the line of succession seems so straightforward. Great video, thank you.
"Serendipity" Simply put: "A HAPPY ACCIDENT. Finding YOU, Dr. Kat, was a VERY SERENDIPITOUS EXPERIENCE ...and continues to be A VERY HAPPY ACCIDENT. Every day which passes, and I learn more and more with each exciting new posting and I discover more great content.. . QUITE SERENDIPITOUSLY ... I AM BECOMING A VERY HAPPY HISTORY CAMPER....IF there is such a Thing!
Loved this video! I would like to see a part 2 on how some of the monarchs were related to their spouses (with many being cousins etc) and how some monarchs had double lines of inheritance. Edward IV for example, both his mother and father were descended from Edward III. I believe Henry VIII and Jane Seymour were related? Both descended from Edward III?
Henry was related to all of his wives to varying degrees as they could all claim descent from Edward I - this is a great idea for a future video! It’s going on the list, thank you 🌟
@@ReadingthePast Oooh interesting. I wasn't aware of that.....actually, maybe I was aware of Katherine of Aragon's descent through an Isabella of Castille possibly? Heads off to Wikipedia etc.....😊🤔
Edward IV was descended from Edward III in three ways. Edward III had five sons: Edward, Lionel, John, Edmund, and Thomas; respectively the Dukes of Cornwall, Clarence, Lancaster, York, and Gloucester. Lionel had a daughter whose daughter married the Earl of March (the reason Edward inherited this same title). It was through this line that the House of York claimed seniority in the succession to the throne. Edward's father's father was the son of the Duke of York. Additionally, as you say, Edward was descended from Edward III as well because his mother was the daughter of Joan Beaufort. Joan was the natural daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. Henry VII's mother was a Beaufort. Her grandfather was the full brother of Joan Beaufort. Thus, Margaret (and Edward's) grandson Henry VIII was descended from Edward III four ways.
Thank you Dr Kat. I was grateful for this masterly summing up of what I learned at school, but which had become hazy in my mind. With regard to the future, it seems that you are happy for us to continue with the monarchy for generations to come. However as I get older, I become more and more convinced that this country will never be mature and will never find a viable niche in the world until we lose the burden of tradition and become a republic. Of course we wouldn't want to reproduce something like the damp squib of the interregnum. I'd favour something like the Irish system, replacing the monarch with a democratically elected non-political head of state with a limited period in office.
Thank you for this informative video. The information prior to Henry V was most helpful to me personally as I have just never had a firm grasp on that part of history. I did note with interest your making a distinction between a monarch "ruling" or "reigning." I would enjoy a video providing more information about that distinction, when it came to be, etc. (I'm an American, so that part of British history is a bit fuzzy for me, I'm afraid). As always, very well done and enjoyable, and for that I thank you so much. And happy birthday to sweet Gabriel!
Thanks for passing on a truly staggering amount of names and dates in a flawless and highly entertaining manner. As always I'd love to see you do a long video on Katherine Swynford, whose liason with John of Gaunt produced so much English royal history.

What Deborah K said! The Lionheart didn't do much for his kingdom apart from costing them a lot of money to fuel his crusading habit so why is he so 'good' and John so 'bad'?
This is a great review, thank you. I always enjoy your videos. I think it would be great if you did a similar video to this one about the Anglo Saxon monarchs, though it probably wouldn't all fit in one video since there were several kingdoms... I don't know as much about those monarchs & would like to learn more.
Hello, how are you doing? It is my pleasure to meet you, I would love to communicate with you privately can it be?
Great video! At the end I almost wanted to breath a sigh of relief that we all got through it. So much information you passed on. Thanks.
Dr. Kat, a very happy birthday to your son! I enjoy your videos, they are always interesting and informative. I’m trying to catch up on your videos, and I enjoy every time! Always good to see you!
This is fantastic. I used to know it all by heart, but not for many years now. What a great refresher in such a soothing format.
Easiest succession line to follow I've ever seen. Love your work. Wish u had been my history teacher!
Thank you. You made the succession clear for me. Your talks are always a pleasure to listen to.
This vid gets saved so I can refer to the clear, concise names & dates when I read historical novels & need regnal stuff! Thanks Dr Kat.
I had saved it to my History Playlist just before I read your comment. 😁
I would be interested in exploring a bit more about John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford. Theirs is an unusual story for the era.
Hello, how are you doing? It is my pleasure to meet you, I would love to communicate with you privately can we communicate?
Very clear and concise. You cleared a couple of clogged areas for me. Thanks!
Oh my stars, how is he one year old already?! Wow, the last year has gone quick.
As a Canadian (geeky teenage) history buff, I memorized the British succession from 1066 to present - so this episode was great fun for me - I loved hearing it.
Excellent job, as usual, Dr Kat! A very helpful resource to those looking at the lines of succession over the last millennia!
Loved this - very clear breakdown!
My husband always asks what your most recent video is and it’s wonderful to take these walks through guided by you. Our conversations during the videos sound something like: "this is the king who was ruling in (insert historical movie)" lol it helps him 🤷♀️
Love English history! Perhaps you could do a video highlighting what each monarch is known for, either good or bad.
I can almost feel your holding back from adding the circumstances of some of the unfortunates who um, er, lost the position of King of 🇬🇧 England. What a motley crue of characters and what glorious theatre they've brought us ever since! SO Love your videos - how intelligent, tactful and FAIR you are where it's needed ... and what a fun way you have in tactfully remaining politically correct, yet giving us The Look ... ha!
I believe you did a great job. Thank you so very much Dr. Kat for the work you put into making the videos for us.
Yes i would like that too!
I truely find your videos very informative and helpful.
You are one of my favorite channels.
Happy first birthday to Gabriel! Always look forward to your videos!
Hello, how are you doing? It is my pleasure to meet you, I would love to communicate with you privately can it be?
Thank you. This was enjoyable and easy to follow.
I very much enjoyed this walk through British royal history. Absolutely fascinating. Thank you for all your hard work for us.
Hello, how are you doing? It is my pleasure to meet you, I would love to communicate with you privately can we communicate?
Superb presentation! I didn't realize there were that many child kings in England's history.
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your channel and to wish your sweet boy a happy be-lated birthday xx
I am saving this in my list. This is fantastic. I am a Tudor history fan but loved hearing this complete royal list. Thank you!
I can't believe that it is a year ago that you made the announcement of the birth of your son! Congratulations on his first birthday! It is apt, I think, to make a video of sons and daughters this week.
Hello, how are you doing? It is my pleasure to meet you, I would love to communicate with you privately can it be?
Lovely clear and concise video which has explained the very early monarchs to me wonderfully, thank you, I have always been confused about them!
Thank you!
Thank you! You have made the successions clearer than anyone I’ve read or heard.
Happy Birthday, Gabriel! Sending you love from the Allegheny Mountains! HOLLER!
Clear and to the point as usual. You make history seem easy. This should help many students of British history.
Thank you Kat , nice and clear . Haven’t we got an interesting history and that’s with you sticking to the succession only .
You are so talented at presenting complicated information in a coherent - and always interesting - manner!
OMG! This is an amazing summary. Thank you so much!
When studying history it was always difficult keeping track of the various monarchs. This video is beautifully clear. I think you could sell the set of family trees.
Wow this is exactly what I needed to get my head around this history. The visual of the family trees was very helpful!!
Thank you for going through this! It was well done. I learned a lot watching this video.
What an incredible historical journey, thanks.👑
Please make a video about Margaret of Anjou! I love her but there aren’t many books or movies about her and history hasn’t been kind to her…
One of your best ! Every video adds a little more to my understanding of my ancestry
"Prepare for the flagrant use of family trees." Had me dying 🤣
I'm a foreigner and never had proper schooling in English/British history (apart from the greatest hits like 1066, war of roses, henry VII, elisabeth, cromwell etc). This video is awesome because in my mind the rulers were more removed from each other than this video proves. For a long time we had free election of a king in my country, so seeing this family tree and the line of succession seems so straightforward. Great video, thank you.
Great video as always, nice hear that your son had nice birthday :)
I AM BECOMING A VERY
HAPPY HISTORY CAMPER....IF there is such a Thing!
Truly wonderful. I love your videos. Thank you.
These videos are the best. Thank you dr. Kat!
@@renshiwu305 The 5th son was Thomas, Duke of Gloucester
You are amazing, Dr. Kat! Much love to you and your family ☮❤
Hello, how are you doing? It is my pleasure to meet you, I would love to communicate with you privately can it be?
Thanks for passing on a truly staggering amount of names and dates in a flawless and highly entertaining manner. As always I'd love to see you do a long video on Katherine Swynford, whose liason with John of Gaunt produced so much English royal history.
Belated Happy Happy, Gabriel!!! Also, Belated Happy Mother's Day, Dr. Kat!
Happy birthday to baby Gabriel. I hope I spelled it right.I enjoyed this very much. Thank you. You have an amazing mind for history.
That was very exciting! There are definite gaps in my knowledge. I can name every monarch from Edward IV-James VI, but after that, it's kind of fuzzy until Elizabeth I. I really enjoyed this!
