  • I live in Arkansas and grow Hawaiian Tropical Plumerias in Zone 7b. I start them indoors and move them out in the Spring. Come see how easy it is to grow them and set yourself up for success!

    👎🏼 I DO NOT buy, nor recommend plant SEEDS on Amazon, only live plants & cuttings from sellers well rated. I've had too many bogus experiences.
    👍🏼 I absolutely DO recommend Amazon on live plants that you can’t get locally. Several of our multi-year tropicals have come from good suppliers on Amazon (like (Logee’s, American Plant Exchange, Cold Hardy Farms, Costa Farms, Old Oaks Nursery, Hirts, etc.) and arrived alive and well.

    This is a no nonsense tutorial on starting Plumerias. Thank you! I am in FL and I just callous and stick in the ground. I like the soda bottles with the drilled holes idea too! I think I might start using root hormone too. I have it, so why not use it!

  • @russbailey4654
    @russbailey4654 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Good information. I too grow several plumeria here in Texas. In our Master Gardener Propagation classes, they recommend to NOT dip the cutting in the rooting hormone, but use a small brush to apply the power. This will insure that you are not contaminating the rest of the powder. Also, lightly wounding the base of the cutting before applying the hormone helps stimulate rooting. I agree with limiting the watering before they leaf out, but once they start producing leaves, and I move them to direct sunlight outside, I water quite a bit (100 degree weather). It has been my experience that a high phosphorous fertilizer works best.

      Hi I live in. Dallas. Just got two plumeria at an estate sale. They are extremely tall like 5' skinny with only flowers at top. Would appreciate any advice. Thank you!

    • @WheelgunsOnWheels
      @WheelgunsOnWheels หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JA-qi9bccut the top 16” off of each branch and put them in a cardboard box in your garage for 10 days to let the would callous up then plant them in the 50/50 pearlite potting soil mix just like in this video. The new cuttings will make brand new plants and the old skinny one will regrow two or three branches at each cut top. Good luck. It’s not hard yet still very rewarding.

    Hey Tiki! Dale Andrews here from Lake Charles, LA. I'm both a "liker" and subscriber. We enjoy a subtropical climate here in Lake Charles, which is about 60 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. With a handful of light freezes here each year, I'll just scoot mine inside an adjacent fluorescent lighted heated room when a nighttime freeze is forecast. They'll stay the majority of the time outside on the patio. I must say that It's just great to live in a climate where we don't have to worry about snow and ice all the time, even in the winter. We can grow a variety of tropical plants outside here like most palms, Bird of Paradise, etc. Thanks to videos like yours when my cuttings arrive from a grower off of Etsy, I'll hit the ground running and have them started in no time. Thanks again and happy growing! 😁

    I'm thrilled to find your video. I have been wanting to growing a plumeria tree since I first smelled one in Hawaii, & I had found a variety that was said to (occasionally) grow in Zone 9B where I am. I knew I'd have to start it indoors, but I was otherwise without experience & didn't want to buy a cutting only to kill it. Then I thought, "You Tube"! And here you were!
    I liked, subscribed, and hit the bell, and I'll be watching the rest of your videos.

    I’ve wanted to grow plumerias since my trip in Hawaii 1998!!! I’m from Montreal Canada so our harsh winter time is brutal for these delicate tropical plants. I was soooo happy when I came across cuttings at downtown Disney in Orlando, so I’ve been buying mine as often as I go to Disney with the kids. The first 6 cuttings that I tried didn’t work out at all (I should have looked up videos) but the last 3 are coming a long slowly. I was able to find a plant of plumeria already pretty big, about 2 feet high. No flowers yet and but a good amount of leaves. I water only when the top is dry. The soil is the mixture you mentioned and I had my husband’s drill holes on the side of the pots. I Never thought of buying growing light but after watching your video, I just ordered the same on Amazon. After watching many videos on how to care for cuttings, and your video is the best. Very easy, and seeing your results (even though your climate is more cooperative then mine …) I will most definitely follow your way. My biggest plumeria lost some leaves, about4-5 leaves became “yellowish” and fell 😮 any idea what is wrong? Thank you!

      Fell in love with plumerias in Hawaii as well, from Ontario - we were excited to see them at Walt Disney World as well but never purchased... These cannot cross the border into Canada. Rather, just inquire at a local nursery :)

    Thank you for the info. My plumeria was given to me from a friends cutting. It was growing with a pretty big crook in it and it got broken off. I gave it a fresh cut and let it callus over. Will use your technique and with a little luck..I’ll have 2 plumeria this summer.

    What a fantastic video share and great Plumeria growing work! I'm getting ready to trim back and propagate my plumeria's. I've been growing Plumeria for 16 years. Sometimes it's been hit or miss, especially with getting blooms. I learned so many things from your video that I'm definitely going to implement! Thank you.
    I especially love the planting and watering system you do for the new stem propagation.
    And I'm going to mind my plumeria's better with fertilizer in the spring/summer and bring them in the garage with grow lights when they would usually go dormant in the winter. Yes, even living in Florida, my plumeria's lose their leaves, due to being in grow zone 9b. And we do get frost sometimes that have killed some of my big ground planted Plumeria's because of unexpected frost that I didn't cover them for.
    My question for you is: since we are full into summer here in Florida, should I just keep my newly planted stems in a morning sun place. We have plenty of heat. But I don't want to burn them out with our full day sun. Also, should I water them more often than once a month due to the extra heat?
    Thanks in advance!

      Thank you so much. When I bring them out in spring, I pot them up and set them in a location that gets a few hours of morning sun, then move them after a few weeks. Sometimes they throw a fit and drop some leaves, but with feeding they come back strong.

    What a great instructor tou are. I moved from Southern California to the state of Washington and had to sadly leave my plumerias behind. Now I am visiting my friend who kept the trees and she suggested I take home some clippings. I would love to let you know how it goes. I plan on following your exact method. Wish me luck.

    I bought a cutting during our visit to Oahu and I've had some rot issues. I'm trying a second time with a 50/50 mix and I've only soaked it with water once, about two weeks ago. Fingers crossed the second try takes. If it doesn't take I'll buy some from the store you got these cuttings from.

      I moved my rotting plant to a covered patio area. Sprayed my plant with 50/50 regular Dawn and water. I think the soap killed the rot and my plant made it! I can’t believe it actually worked. Found a video where someone suggested it. Sorry I didn’t save it.
