I'm right there with him, I'm amazed at how well they took it. I was flying a 500 size drone in downtown Houston in an empty parking lot. A cop rolled by and told me I had to bring it down because it was illegal, I was prepared for that kind of situation, so I showed him the FAA portion on sUAS, and he wasn't having it, then he changed it up to "it makes me feel unsafe". I told him, "then maybe I should feel unsafe that an officer that *protects and serves* is afraid of a drone". At that point, he stopped insisting and said: "I'm going to stay here until you leave". That was my first of 3 5500 mah packs. I didn't plan on filming for so long, but since he was pulling that stunt, I stayed. He eventually left when I was flying my second pack. It's their ignorance of the FAA laws that makes it difficult sometimes

Santa Monica has had that municipal code for at least 3-4 years. The FAA stuff is them spewing shit they dont know or care about because they can/will cite for the municipal code. Could be an infraction but probably a misdemeanor. Really not worth aruging with them on the weight limit reg the 1/2 pound issue if they have already made up their minds.
Look, you can either be childish about it and take your chances with calling him dumb to his face while arguing... at which point the municipal code gives him plenty of weight of law to give you lawful commands to stop, to tresspass you, cite you, or possibly arrest you. There are FAA brief/FAQ sheets that have gone around to LE agencies trying to tell the LE agencies what they can/cannot do. The shit thing is the FAA wants the LE agencies to collect information on contacts with anyone flying that may be a questionable flight and to pass it along to the FAA, at some point the FAA is going to start acting like even MORE like the IRS and start chasing after people to fine them. Or you can just chalk it up as needing to move on much like Steele and Ummagawd did. Here is the deal. When you have something to lose you dont mess around with people that have nothing to lose. In the case of the govt you can bet your ass they have lots of resources and NOTHING to lose in going after you. Honestly I think the cop, while not well versed, handled it fairly well and may even think that it is a stupid law the FAA came up with and may even disagree with the municipal code. But you wont get him saying that on camera much less in the place of his employment...
look it was my personal opinion. If you have something against it keep it to yourself. If I wish to tell a police officer that the FAA does not acknowledge quads under half a pound then I may tell them. Would I say "your a stupid idiot"? No. I would politely tell them that I am following the law like I always have done for people that do not agree with drones. If you would like to get the last word right now you may. I honestly do not care because your opinion is yours and you may tell who you wish to. Thank you for your time. I know this was hard to read as you have the burning urge to fight back. Goodnight to you sir.
I actually find it quite surprising for Steele and Ummagawd to act like that, since Steele is usually doing more risky and unsafe flying whilst in public. It was especially demonstrated when they chose to loop the donut, and the others did not. Really shows the difference in character when two of the pilots were discussing risk and safety, whilst the others were doing the complete opposite. (Seemed like the editor was showing this off with the music and all too).
So the cops dont even know their own country's laws? He's quoting FAA regulations, saying they don't specify weight... so all that 250g stuff that was introduced clearly hasn't been briefed to those cops. I'm in the UK, and I actually carry with me a laminated copy (sad, I know) of the CAA's regulations that apply to the aircraft I fly. Far too often I've been spoken to by people in "authority" who tell me I'm not allowed to do something... 9 times out of 10 they're trying to "BS" me, using their authority to intimidate me... when no such rule/regulation applies.... that's when I crack out the documentation that calls out their BS :-)
Steele's posture at the cop station is a classic defense posture with crossed arms. Can't blame him though, he's a 107 holder and the cops mostly incorrect views of the FAA's position is very irritating. He and Tommy did well. The cops ignorance is outweighed by his badge and gun though. Hehe, Steele was itching to correct him but demonstrated restraint when necessary..... Rotors On Rotor Riot!
Steele that took some balls taking that cop on in his own house. Loved the content. Kudos to Chad and Stinger for explanation of the consideration of safety you guys go through. Maybe the haters will shut up. Prolly not... One of the best episodes so far. More please.
Tommy & Steele you guys won this video hands down. No jeopardy in safety and all fun! I loved watching you argue with the po po & Steele suddenly realizes there is no point in trying to educate someone who's not open to listen or learn. RR crew, so good to see you back in action and having FUN!!! 😀
haha best part 17:00 about to take off...school bus. Love it. had me actually laughing. Also I think Chad sets a great example here discussing how he does a bit of a risk assessment before flying at a spot and even how just because he has the skills to fly something he chooses not to if others are at risk.
Taking a time out to consider what can go wrong? While realizing you have a work vacation and a passport at stake? Yeah that decision likely can be made pretty easily at that point.
The cop part was hard to watch. They had no idea what the laws and the FAA regulations are. My understanding (being a part 107 licensed drone pilot) is that those regs don't apply to drones/UAS/model aircraft under 0.55 pounds. So they certainly wouldn't apply to the 18 gram micro quad the RIOT guys were talking about flying out in public. Now local municipalities can make laws stating that you're not allowed to operate (key word there being operate since they can't regulate the airspace but they can regulate what goes on from the ground i.e; operating the controller/drone from the ground inside the municipalities limits.) Like some other people have said though, those cops had no chill and were definitely kind of dicks. What else is new? In my experience cops are dicks all over the world. The profession must just attract that sort of personality :/
Not all cops are dicks, some are thieves lol, I'm currently traveling in Mexico and our executive escort drivers have already been ripped off twice with false accusations. I'm all for cops, they just need to learn the laws right, enforce them by the book, and most importantly...FOLLOW THEM!
