Eric has guts. He stimulates your thinking, whether you love him or hate him. One thing that could've made the audience more clear about his position on non-interference of other countries (even if there is a genocide) and let them make decisions for themselves is that China does not force business or cooperation decisions on other countries; China offers them and let them decide (or negotiate) for themselves. Whereas the west, using humanitarian reasons to interfere, often forces their "solution" on others (and resulting in disasters for the countries). The 150 years of humiliation for China started with foreign powers forcing one-sided trade deals with China. In another talk, an African high official (in trade, if I remember correctly) described that when China made a trade deal with his country, and the contract was already signed, he felt it was unfair to his country and complained to China. He was surprised to find out that the China side was quite willing to re-negotiate and in the end he was able to procure a new contract much more beneficial to his country. This method of foreign dealings does involve time and pain and learning, but ultimately it is respectful of the country you're dealing with, and helps both sides to learn and grow.

When European first came to America, there were 20-25 million native Americans. Now, where are they?
I tend to agree Eric's point that the west has religious mentality about human rights and political system. All western religions must have an almighty god as reference, while Chinese religions are much more pragmatic and not ideological at all. Chinese do not care about if there is one god in the universe, or the god is almighty or not. These questions are beyond the capability of human beings.
You can tell China is much respected by their policy of non interference in the third world by the African man himself. Eric has reiterated many times they are doing business with Africa and it is up to African nations to decide the rules. China just plays by the rules of Africa to try and get the best deal for themselves. If you call that neo colonialism or modern day imperialism then Western colonialism must of been hell itself. Stop making judgements you white people who live in wealthy nations; you know little of how others in the third world live.
Learn to read and comprehend what the point being made is idiot. I am talking about China as a country interacting with other nations outside of China. You are talking about Africans immigrating/working in China. They are completely different things. Damn when did the western world become so dumb that they can't even comprehend sentences in their own language. I'm talking about how governments behave and you're talking about racial tensions. Damn I'm frustrated that I even have to explain my previous comment. Its like talking to a wall or someone that doesn't have a brain.
You mentioned white people who live in wealthy nations. The question is how they became "wealthy" in the first place. Don't you think they became wealthy from all the lootings they did and is still doing in those "poor" nations that they once colonised?
I wouldn't characterise China as successful either, they're both developing countries. India has a GDP per capita of $9000 while China has $21,000. For reference, the average European country has $45,000. I think it will take at least another 30 years for India and China to be truly developed and successful.
@Qing Tong I was stating the PPP figures. India's GDP per capita is $2000 by nominal standard and $9000 by PPP standard. Similarly, China's per capita GDP is $10,000 by nominal standards and $21,000 by PPP standards. According to the UN, China is already a developed country. But clearly the living standards in China are far below that of Western countries, and it will take at least 30 years for China to catch up; 10 years is simply not enough.
@@abhishekmhatre1554 , if you measure GDP per capita on PPP basis, China will exceed the West in 10 years (even taking into account the global economic upset caused by COVID-19). I am not certain if the world's resources could cope with a Chinese absolute GDP per capita of $45k.
@@abhishekmhatre1554 You are right, China's GDP needs to be at least three times that of the US, which will take at least 30 years, which is also in line with world Bank forecasts

My eyes were opened, all my life the western propaganda machine had me believing lies. Walking at night in the down town of major cities in China is safe while trying that in Atlanta or Phoenix, or Miami or Los Angeles is a life threatening experience. I've seen both. America thinks it's free because you can change the government. BUT GOVERNMENT WARS NEVER STOP because the elected officials answer only to corporations and CASH. In China they can't change the government but they are more free to change government policy. Like the policy that pulled 800 million people out of poverty. No American wants to have perpetual war and yet they do. No Chinese wants perpetual war so they don't. Who has more control. Who has more freedom? In China if you want policy changes you either organize a peaceful public display about what needs changing or join the Communist party to effect change from within. We in the west must stop being so hypocritical, changing our government changes nothing. The bombing and sanctions must go on, someone controls that but it sure isn't the voters. The west finds democracy the best political system and thus believes it should be universal even it has many problems itself. Without this universal concept people are uncomfortable as if they're without the support of a religion. The Chinese believe the political system should be of an ever evolving nature thus they cannot tell what exactly their ultimate political system will be. It's very difficult for the west to understand the Chinese concept, at least in the coming decade or so.
@ cs c, you are absolutely right. The very concept is so foreign to the West that it is out of their comfort zone. The Western dominance for the passed century has afforded them a belief their values are universal truths.
I never buy the west's claims about their belief in their so-called universally best political system.ie democracy. If one learnt nothing of how the west itself sabotaged and destroyed the democratic systems in some countries, while at the same time give full support to monarchial and military dictatorships, then it only show how ignorant and un-educated one is. When it comes to dealing with countries around the world, China's policy is to respect each other's internal affairs and culture, while the Western policy is to promote so-called freedom and democracy. Which policy is more democratic? I believe that if democracy cannot be promoted in a democratic way, it is not democratic
Several people praised Eric for his bravery in speaking out. does this mean that in their environment, it needs courage to praise the Chinese government. Does it mean there is real freedom of speech?
Eric didn't address the question at 39:00 regarding just and unjust law well... It s a fallacious comparison...how could the laws of a colonial, foreign regime in an alien land be ever just and justified, their presence in China in the first place is itself unjustifiable .There's no comparison with the laws of a sovereign country. Spot on, the point made at 50:00. Why is the audience is still stuck with converting, intervening in the internal affairs of Africa? Part of the civilising mission syndrome ?
1.About the unjust law question, I think Eric already answered but without further explaining. what he meant is that there are always difference of opinions in society, if someone find a law unjust he can disagree (within legislation)or fight(out of the legal permission), but at the same time he should also take the burdens of breaking the current law(whether it's being jailed or sanctioned). doesn't matter if it is under communist rule or colonial rules, you have to take the consequences of the behavior. However the difference is that, if it is really an unjust law that violating majority of the people, there will be some kind of concessions or there will be endless social unrest. That is the risk taken by the government. 2. About the question of genocide and Chinese in jail, if it is the internal conflict, the outside should be very careful to intervine, it's internal affairs, and how do you know you can create good results for the locals and also for your own people? this is why the West ignored the Rwanda genocide in 1994 (pure cost, no benefit, and uncertain results) while on the case of Chinese citizens in jail, it's a diplomatic problem not pure internal affairs, and of course foreign governments will be involved.
the fundamental organizing principles of China are: technocracy, internal free-trade Capitalism, and harmony as an unchallenged sovereign in the Asia-Pacific region.
When countries cannot produce a healthy society of its own, where almost entire nation cannot benefit in all aspects of growth, it is absurd, ludicrous for those countries to go around the world demanding 'corrections' from other countries with cultural differences from it's own. No different than going into your neighbors' houses to criticize how they live. People flatter themselves when they believe in their own higher moral ground, actually, those are the countries with the most internal problems.
While I do not agree with the genocide part, I mostly agree with Eric Li ideas. Capitalistic and democracy is not the know it all, solve it all system, and in some ways its even dysfunctional and destructive, we need to look further in reforming our system, not meaning abolishing democracy, but change it and improve it. The Meritocracy political system work for China and its culture, but not might not work western cultures and visa versa. However I do think as far as genocide countries need to help and stop it, maybe not countries but a world order like the United Nations. We let wars be fought out, like in North and Sout Korea, but genocide we should not allow, that is a big no no in regard to Eric Li ideas. The rest was perfectly sound.
I can't say for certain about the history but I can tell you it isn't or hasn't been on-going in china for a few decades. I've been to Tibet they do live as free as the rest Chinese people. They are not closed to outsiders either, feel free to visit or check travel vlogs.
AS for the freedom of speech. One thing I have point out, though I admire the eloquence of Eric, to organize is different from the potential of being able to organize. Maybe Ai Weiwei has been writing, filming video aiming for anti-government, it may be subjugated to local legal violation. But it seems to me that not just the act of organizing anti-government is being banned in China. It as been extended to the potential of it. That means as long as the gov thinks that what you are doing might be promoting the organization, they ban it. One instance is every time I posted discussion video that discusses sensitive posted on youtube onto youku, it is banned. Apparently my move is not to promote any commotion of any sorts but they ban it. that confuses me.
I see a lot of influence from carl schmitt and alain de benoist on his opinions. Really interesting that the chinese are the ones affirming some sort of tradition, in opposition to modern western capitalism.
Yes! Eric answered this in various interviews in the last few years. The biggest client of the biggest polling company in China is the Chinese government. There is a closed feedback loop to inform the government of how they are doing.
Ai Wei Wei gets trouble by talking up about Gaza and said western world is not much different than China now. Freedom of speech is in the mind of the beholder. People are different so do country too, no such thing as us democracy is one size fits all. Don’t impose others on what you have. Everyone has one own choice.
I wonder why Li doesn't frame the Africa / intervention / genocide issue in terms of China's colonial past. Surely that informs the Chinese perspective of not intervening in others' cultures?
If ones doesn’t understand China, he can’t debate with Eric li because he has established his own story circuit. But if one understands china, he clearly know what the flaw is. For one, Chinese society has been religious throughout the history. The atheism only begun after ccp took over. So it is not the Chinese people rather the ccp are atheists. Another one, Chinese traditional ideology also promotes humanity and the equality of all mankind called 人文主义 and 天下大同. It is rather different than the nationalism ideology that Eric advocate.
Chinese have been superstitious but they are not religious under overwhelming Confucianist influence for nearly two thousand years. Superstition and Religion are two different things or two different stages, the former primitive and intuitive, latter often tends to be much more developed yet more fundamental thus more confining (as shown in Christianity and Islamism). I suggest u go read Lin Yutang's My Country and My People to gain some insights into the Chinese society from a Chinese Christian perspective.

I disagree with Mr. E. Li again what he said about Tibetan population has doubled since Chinese took over contradicts what actually happened in Tibet. Lots of Han Chinese have migrated to Tibet and Tibetan become a minority in their homeland.
Becoming minority doesn't mean genocide, doesn't mean bullying. When you immigrate to another country, you become the minority. In the old time, when there is no sense of nation, no sense of boundary, large population immigrate all the time. What is actually happening there? I don't know. As a venture capitalist in China, Mr. Li must gain the favors and support of the Chinese government. His pro totalitarian system of government stance is perhaps not a conclusion of purely intellectual conviction. How conveniently Mr. Li excused the disastrous mismanagement of Mao with China's economic success today. It is not healthy to idealize Maoist China and China is successful today precisely because the party abandoned Mao's harebrained ideas. Mr. Li lacks intellectual integrity.
I don't see where Eric "excused Mao". He said China itself doesn't yet know the best form of gov't yet, it is evolving. He said that when his father was put in prison it was unfair. China makes many mistakes but it is on a path to constantly reforming itself; watch his TED talk where he speaks about this.
The narrative against Mao was from the Red Scare, McCarthy hearings etc. an honest view of him and his accomplishments would show tremendous strides in development indicators and setting the foundation for China’s higher growth after reform and opening.
I fail to see anything unique about the heritage and traditions of Chinese political system and the culture such a system fosters: a feudal empire and a culture defined by an ideology - Confucianism - that reinforces the rigid social hierarchy and status quo, much like how Christianity functioned during the middle ages in the West. Mr. Li wouldn't be the eloquent free thinking person he is today if he never left China.

Tibet became part of China since 13th century and please search online or go to the library to find out this fact. Second, the population of Tibetans almost tripled since 1951. When European first came to America, there were 20-25 million native Americans. Now, where are they?

Great talk! Wish I found it 9 years ago.
Most gods in Chinese myth were human beings..... Apart from the very first one who split earth into sky & earth(but he died)
Well the Western nations were founded based on religious fundamentals. That's why you have the church of England.
Here for Eric 🤘
And I would not Characterize India as a "successful" country...
@@abhishekmhatre1554 Don't use PPP
@@abhishekmhatre1554 You are right, China's GDP needs to be at least three times that of the US, which will take at least 30 years, which is also in line with world Bank forecasts

I am 3rd generation Canadian who has vacationed extensively in USA, but in 2014 spent 1/2 a year traveling through China. We in the west must start understanding that other systems work as well and perhaps better than ours. We meddle in the affairs of virtually every country in the world .

A respectful interview that doesn't descend into condescending interruptions, despite opposing views, for once.
Several people praised Eric for his bravery in speaking out.
does this mean that in their environment, it needs courage to praise the Chinese government. Does it mean there is real freedom of speech?
When Erik says "Even for me its a profitable transaction."
And the Hindu : "Huh!" Back in his mind: " Fuck, India still looks like shit now...."
White people talked and asked questions uninterrupted, African man start talking, "hurry up we're running out of time". Really make my blood boils.
The host doesn't understand China at all. And apparently couldn't catch Li's meaning.
Part of the civilising mission syndrome ?
i think what he meant was he agreed there were just laws and unjust laws and he thought that particular law was just. The old man just didn’t follow.
@@stuckathome068 yes maybe Eric didn't want to state the obvious
There are so meny people do not want to face truce or are brainwashed.
Dr. David R. Hawkins MD. And Ph.d. clarified what is beneficial and what is not beneficial to human beings.

Chinese have been superstitious but they are not religious under overwhelming Confucianist influence for nearly two thousand years.
