With the potentially increased video output I like to imagine it as Paul and Quinns are locked in a room together with nothing for sustenance other than board games. And.... they're shirtless. I dunno, it's my imagination.

I was really bummed when I heard that Paul has been having some unspecific visa/residency issues with Canada.... but..... no, I really didn't like that that was happening, really...... but........... selfishly............ when I learned he would be moving nearby to also-moved Quinns, and the prospect of those two doing regular double-trouble in-person review videos, I felt really happy, and this video is Exhibit A of why.
I'd gladly see you two stop making duo-deals because Paul is free to return, but in the mean time, I'm secondarily glad to watch you united again.

This was REALLY helpful as I'm looking at the Century: Golem Edition. Any thoughts on that series? The third of the trilogy just came out. The first two look like similar mechanics to the Century (spicy) edition. Maybe you'll do a video on the Golem Edition Trilogy. That would be great! Love you guys and I will keep watching because you continue to make me laugh and help me decide on what games to add to my collection!

    • @michaelcreek3813

You've probably figured this out by now, but for anyone else reading this comment, the Golem Edition games are the exact same games as the Spice Editions. The gameplay and mechanics are exactly the same, just with a Golem retheme.
Century: Spice Road = Golem Edition ----- Century: Eastern Wonders = Golem: Eastern Mountains ----- Century: A New World = Golem: An Endless World

Some cool stuff about Spice Road Classic that deserves a mention and is easy to neglect: using a trade card on your turn lets you transform _any multiple_ of its components. That 2-red -> 2-brown trade? It can act like 4-red -> 4-brown, or 6 -> 6, etc. Employing these multi-trades gives you a _huge_ turn advantage over the other players and is almost always a good decision.
The "rest" mechanic is a great measure of how efficiently your engine operates. New players only notice this after making the mistake of resting every other turn, so they can keep re-playing some amazing farm card they got. Since resting is _losing a turn,_ those people end up getting barely more than half as many turns as other players. Also, resting often with a lot of unplayed cards necessarily means you spent turns and resources _buying cards you aren't using!_
However, one fun thing it's missing from Splendor is the "screw you" mechanic of reserving prizes purely to keep other players from getting them.

Hey I love your videos and it has made me want to get more into board gaming. I've really only played Catan though, so I don't have much frame of reference when watching your reviews. I know the game has probably been reviewed to death based on how popular it is, but I would really appreciate if you could make a video about it. Hearing your criticisms/opinions about a game I've played would really help me figure out which other games I would like to try playing.

This is an old review, BUT, I do love SUSD and I have to say Century: Golem Edition, is the best production of this game. I like Splendor, but I love Golem edition, and I have to say, I like it MORE, personally. Certainly it corrects the art, making it wonderful, and the gems are way better than the spice cubes. I don't even feel compelled to own the Golem equivalent of Eastern Wonders, the base game is plenty good.
    Again, tho, love the reviews.

Woof, the art. Looks like it's trying to impress people who only intake visual art for extended periods of time through Euro games. Imagine how handsome it'd be if the cards were 100% artsy iconography with delicate ornamentation or where you only see hands or ill-defined figures around products or contracts; having humans or those oddly detailed islands is so unnecessary.
Excellent video, by the way! Can't believe how much high quality stuff you guys put out.

I'm not buying any of the games, before there's a clear "yes" or "no", on the fact if the Ogre Edition is getting expansions/part 2 and 3. Simply because I prefer the Ogre edition, but if I don't have the possibility to combine the games (of course I can combine, but the styles won't fit), I don't feel like buying any yet.

I think this review, and the rules, don't make it clear enough that harvesting cards can only be played once per turn (as expected) but "transform" cards can be used as many times as you can afford the input. This means that you don't only just upgrade what you can but prepare your stock to most efficiently transform stacks.

Instead of a big box edition in 2020 we got the Golem Edition of the entire series by 2020.

Personally? I love Spice Road FAR more than Splendor. Spice Road feels like a friendly race, and when you get a good engine going...well, I say it's the best "flow" of a game I've ever felt. In comparison, Splendor felt cutthroat and mean. Hogging many of one particular gem, grabbing cards with a bank to deprive others of them, and eventually lording a gem empire over others. Not to say cutthroat games can't be fun, but not what I want with these kind of themes and gameplay.
But I DO agree with your assessment of the Spice Road art and components...so I got the golem edition which at least has better art (all unique victory cards and trade cards altered to match what's being gotten/traded)...which doesn't really work with Eastern Wonders?
Also...I recently have been reviewing your videos since I learned of this group through the War of the Ring review, and is Paul just...more negative than everyone else? Is that his role? To be the cynic? Because he seems to clash on so many decisions and constantly vote against recommendations the others like. But in many episodes he's the psychotic, obsessive one? Maybe he and I just have opposite opinions on what to look for in a board game, so I'm more critical of him...being more critical about games I like. But sometimes I disagree with the others but don't react as badly, so I dunno.

Just a quick question -- Century: The New World is out... are you planing on trying all three together?
Please let Paul yell profanities at Quinns in the intro again. Brilliant.
