Progressive to me isn't all about crazy arrangements and time signatures.. It's also about exploration and experimentation. Take Pink Floyd for example.. they were considered progressive for that reason. So I'd say this is a very progressive record in that sense
I love it, i'm fed up of all these snobby metal types slagging off metal band's who like to expand their sound and who don't growl / shout all the time, What the fuck is wrong with clean vocals?? Metal fans need to open up
I agree man it's all the shitty "post hardcore" and metalcore bands with whiny girly singers ruining it for other bands and making everybody hate clean vocals
It's 72 minutes long and when I listen to both disks, I don't even realize it's over by the time the last track comes along. It's paced perfectly and flows together really nicely. Rarely can a band pull this off and that is why I'm in love with these albums.
Idk why ppl say this is entirely a mellow album? Take My Bones Away, Sea Lungs, March to the Sea, Psalms Alive and all are pretty 'heavy' tracks, obviously not sludge heavy, but definitely leaning on to hard rock/heavy metal territory. Its a progressive-hard rock-metallish album, that's what it is.
Funny you suggest Gojira. I bought this album and L'enfant Sauvage on the same day. They go together really well. If Gojira and Baroness toured together my head might explode.
10/10, found out this band randomly on youtube, got the yellow and green and i know i will remember the songs on the album forever. the song board up the house and march to the sea all my top played songs right now
These were my thoughts also. Baroness still have all their heavy elements. They are just becoming more artistic with their overall compositions. The track Cocanium was one of the best tracks on Yellow I thought, it seemed have a very Pink Floyd feel to it.
I love this album. For me it stands at a 9.5 ish. It was mainly about stripping down structure and escaping most of the trappings of their earlier stuff, and i think it worked really well for them. and I think it sounds awesome.
i dig the choice in themes. we saw two albums, one almost cantankerously dynamic in the red with it's ambitious progressions and compositional hoop jumping while the blue saw a widening of the sonic range and even heavier progs. with yellow and green, we feel the sun a little bit, the lyrics aren't changed in style necessarily but far more articulate and we're given more of that acoustic pleasure. can't wait to hear how mystically heavy purple is, how orange sawrs and what silver communicates.
They came out of the sludge metal movement, and while they have never fully embodied the style, you can hear it heavily on their early EPs and a little bit on their first album.
I really didn't know much about these guys going into the album, and I found myself really impressed with the musicianship/melodies. Overall, it was tough completely getting over the lead singer's voice, which got a little butt rocky at times. Thanks for the nice review.
totally thought i was going to utterly despise your review. however you were honest and fair. i personally love baroness and respect their sudden change in progression. my favorite song is board up the the house. i also gravitated more to the green album anyway.
Ebbot Lundberg - There's only one of us here Periphery - Periphery ll, The Contortionist - Intrinsic, Ihsahn - Eremita, The Elijah - I loved I hated I destroyed I created
The Dark Knight Rises soundtrack just came out, Fantano. Considering that I haven't seen you do a soundtrack review, much less a soundtrack for the most anticipated movie of this year, I really do hope that you review it.
They aren't a Georgia band anymore. A lot of their prime was spent here in Savannah, yes, but even then one or two members didn't even live here. Now they have fully migrated elsewhere. We definitely miss em though.
It took me awhile to get into it. I liked it immediately, but it's since really grown on me. Definitely something I"ll keep listening to for years to come.
This LP has grown on me since the release, but I'd disagree with you on Yellow being the stronger of the two, unless you meant stronger as in more distortion. I found Yellow to be a bit too inconsistent for me to say it was stronger, while it is strong in some spots, I just didn't find myself enjoying every minute of it. Green, on the other hand, while not pushing as many boundaries, kept a more consistent sound going, and I found every song enjoyable due to the large, instrumental sections.
I love my sludge down and dirty. Huge fan of bands like Eyehategod that just sound like they're being dragged through thick, swampy mud when they're playing. I loved this album, though. Genre tags are something you add after the fact. I didn't come into this expecting Iron Monkey. I just listened to a beautiful, catchy and memorable album. Even when Baroness was sludgier, I admired them for their gorgeous sound and it's in full bloom here.
Anthony, I think you should re-review this album. You've done an absolutely bang-up great job on reviewing Yellow & Green, but I do feel that repeated listenings really bring those other songs into their own: Psalms Alive is lyrically stunning; Cocanium admittedly doesn't bring anything new, but the solid soft/loud structure helps to bring the different (tuneful) sections home to roost; and Board up the House is a great little rock number. Thanks! :)
I can't say I didn't like this album, but I don't love it the way that I love Red and Blue. Whats missing for me is a lack of urgency that Blue built. I realize that there was a lot of thought put into the music, but it feels like there is a little less passion in it. I was hoping that we could get an Isak or Swollen and Halo out of this while still moving in that new direction. I think I need to give Yellow and Green more spins to see if it grows on me, but for now its just ok.
i am a fan, but the blue album was what really made me love them. while i liked a lot of tracks on this album, it didn't draw me in as much as the other songs. When i heard the way they did "ogeechee hymnal" into "horse called golgatha" i was just mesmerized. it gives me goosebumps. i was deffinatley a huge fan of "take my bones away". very catchy, i find myself singing it a lot. its one of those songs that gets stuck in your head for a while. another i am a fan of is" board up the house".
Psalms Alive is so good, how didn't that make your "favorite tracks" list? I would have given this album a decent 8. I liked it much better than I thought I would.
I actually agree with this. Although i wouldn't call the other songs "fillers" but more like "cushions". They really fit the album well when listening from beginning to end, but if you're the type of person who picks and chooses songs from the album, then yes you're right.
A lot of people are absolutely hating this album, but I think it's really good. Of course, it's a lot different than their past material, but I love the vibes the songs have.
I like that they give a lot on this album. Songs that do different things, that are still straight forward. Not as strong as Blue Album, though that album was going to be the toughest to follow up, because it was so good. I think the band delivered. Probably would have had an even better album if they just kept the strongest songs and made a single disk LP, but then that might be missing the point of this record.
I can see why people don't really like this album, but I think calling them sellouts is totally unfair. The effort put into this album is extremely tangible, and you can tell they put A LOT of themselves into the risks they took. For me, I loved it. This is the direction I wanted them to go in, you can only do so much with "sludge metal", and they sound like they thrive with more expansive ideas.
Last 2 albums i feel easily timeless, unique, and part of a group of rockers fed up with angsty teenage drama music, less about being a poster on some preteens wall and more about something meaningful. Now i feel this band has become that angsty band "thats so deep", like a grunge 2.0 a trend. A rehash of 2000's attempts at bringing metal to the mainstream, some alternative play for people that listen to the music they are told to. That eventually just inspires another Nickleback and Creed.
And good for me. I was hoping for this album to be more accessible then two previous ones. Unlike my friends and many others I'm not the biggest fan of their first two albums for some reason. Anyway - Baroness forever! How about reviewing new Nile record - 'At the gate of Sethu'?
According to Wikipedia: "They combine elements of sludge metal, progressive metal and punk." To be fair though, their sound is about as far removed from sludge as you can get for a band that is supposedly influenced by it. I might say their earlier albums were more of an "indie" take on sludge.
Compared to Red and Blue, Yellow & Green is so simple that you don't really need multiple listens to really get it. Not saying that it doesn't have more to offer on the second or third go round, but its not deep enough to need it.
i think this review is spot on. Musically, i wouldn't ask for anything more, and vocally its ambitious. its only weakness is its lyrics, imo. Jon Baizley is a pretty intense guy, a thinker. He's obviously not one to continue to churn out a formulaic offering each and every time just so some of you who are still stuck on Red can feel safe. That's what's so great about art. Unless the band is a pure sellout, you must be objective each time something new is released, not hope to be appeased.
Personally, this album took some time to grow on me by comparison to Red and Blue, but once I "got it", I really started to enjoy it. I think I find both Red and Blue to be more to my personal tastes, but this is definitely good enough to constitute fairly frequent listens.
Thanks for reviewing it. I thought they did alot more with their style(the synth, string sections, etc.) but I think we share alot of the same opinions. I would give them an 8 out of ten. Take my Bones Away was. def. my fav. track though. I honestly liked Blue album better , but its still a good abum.
I think that you should review Raw by Hopsin. Even thought over a whole year has passed since the album has been released I think that it's just a project that should be recognized for its level of well....Rawness, if that's a word. He produced every song on that album and with only 2 people collaborated with on it. I'm sure that with the way that you like Section.80 I'm positive that you would feel that the album is up to your expectations as a Hardcore Hip-Hop Album. He's a guy to look into.
Loved the album. About a 9.2/10 for me. I agree that there are a few weaker songs, but those ones end up having intense climaxes that render them memorable for me, so they aren't complete throwaways. Great review.
Love this album. Reminds me a lot of Queens of the stone age. But it's a really cool rock album and the songs are catchy as fuck. After one or two listens I already had many songs stuck in my head.
absolutely, the only reason scene kids cling to them like crazy is because the be very technical just for the sake of it, so the Metal fans can't bash them but that's still not enough to see through their plan.
You should review the album In a Million Years by Last Dinosaurs. Its a debut album by an Australian band and very fun to listen to. Its Indie with a very tropical feel to it.
@Turdsplosion I disagree with that statement. I love prog and this is my favorite album from Baroness this far. It's more the underground fans that feel the need to be hipsters and deny it.
but i am finding many of my contemporaries really digging this record, and i can't understand why, so i will be giving it second and third chances in the future. i don't necessarily miss the "metal", i miss the progressive (interesting) songwriting. in many ways this is a bold move by the group, in other ways it feels like a massive cop out to those who have closely followed th group since their groundbreaking First and Second EPs.
Baizley's new vocals are reminiscent of Nickelback. And I guess I'm stupid because all the long riffs and purely instrumental segments of their songs seem to be gone.
This is the best album of 2012!!! The album has so many layers to it. So much mood and textures to it. Forget to mention the lyrics. This is the make or break element of the record. It seems simplistic, as he said but that is your ego speaking to you. It is complex and well thought out. Remember heaviness has little to do with downtuning and more about how the riffs fit and how ideas are played out.
Board Up the House is easily the standout of these to discs for me. i can feel the passion and atmosphere that initially made me love this group, which is sorely lacking on the rest of these tracks.
Totaly agree with you about Mtns. loved the song so much just could not get over all the bullshit done to the vocals really ends up ruining a fantastic song. Same goes for sea lungs otherwise loved the record. Was hooked on it for months. I found it much more consistent than the Blue record for sure, which I found myself skipping most of the songs when I'd go back and listen to it.
i dont think that ones ganna happen man, he just doesnt like wilson or akerfeld, but if you read this anthony, i do think you should just try it, im sure you have, but if you haven’t, you should because it is a different direction than normal. its still got the same personally as normal though i de say, but like you say, this could be the one. regardless, i know your busy, but ide like to hear your review of it if you can find the time.
personally i love this album just as much as i loved red and blue, i think people need to open up to the music, they had to make some changes or they would just be making the same music over and over all bands make changes.
I'm gonna say it again, even if you already commented on it ^^ A Place to Bury Stranger - Worship by the way, thanks for Baroness. I was on the fence on this.

This is my fav Baroness record.
Collapse is beautiful
Cocainium, Little Things and Back Where I Belong are my favorite tracks
Mastodon 🤘🏼
Eula is one of those songs that sticks with me for a long time after I listen.
This band seems like their going to keep improving
Man were you correct
Still correct 👍
Idk why ppl say this is entirely a mellow album? Take My Bones Away, Sea Lungs, March to the Sea, Psalms Alive and all are pretty 'heavy' tracks, obviously not sludge heavy, but definitely leaning on to hard rock/heavy metal territory. Its a progressive-hard rock-metallish album, that's what it is.
still I'm pissed for having MNTS as your worst track.

The vocalist of Baroness is a painter who does album covers, one of which was the Kvelertak album.
These were my thoughts also.
Baroness still have all their heavy elements. They are just becoming more artistic with their overall compositions.
The track Cocanium was one of the best tracks on Yellow I thought, it seemed have a very Pink Floyd feel to it.
The layers of this album are amazing. If you listen to it with some good headphones it will be a completely different experience.
I love this album. For me it stands at a 9.5 ish. It was mainly about stripping down structure and escaping most of the trappings of their earlier stuff, and i think it worked really well for them. and I think it sounds awesome.

Poolside - Pacific Standard Time is an album I think you'd enjoy. It's the freshest disco-rock fusion since LCD soundsystem first formed!
They came out of the sludge metal movement, and while they have never fully embodied the style, you can hear it heavily on their early EPs and a little bit on their first album.
Ha... the second the album cover popped up I thought to myself, "that reminds me a lot of that Kvelertak cover"
I really didn't know much about these guys going into the album, and I found myself really impressed with the musicianship/melodies. Overall, it was tough completely getting over the lead singer's voice, which got a little butt rocky at times. Thanks for the nice review.

first i didn't like it - now i'm completely in love!! especially after watching a live performance of 'Eula'.. that song is just so freaking epic!
I'm not big into metal by any means but I got to say that this is the exact kind of metal that I love. Thanks for bringing this group to my attention.
what an excellent professional and insightful revew, once again
Sea Lungs.
I deeply appreciate your Stoner/Sludge reviews. Give All Them Witches and Kyuss a review!
Ebbot Lundberg - There's only one of us here
Periphery - Periphery ll,
The Contortionist - Intrinsic,

I fucking love the album. It showed that the band ha really matured in the past few years and I'd say it's a must listen. 9/10
It's not supposed to come out until the 17th, but it was leaked two weeks early.
this double album was made with baizley playing at 4/4 and pete playing 3/4
which something amazing
Psalms Alive is so good, how didn't that make your "favorite tracks" list? I would have given this album a decent 8. I liked it much better than I thought I would.

Best album I've bought in seriously 10 years. Took me a few days to realize it, but it's sick.
You really know how to dissect music, sir. Bravo. I love this album set!
This was a great review! You seem like a wonderful dude man! :D Your video glitched out on me!!!
Thanks for reviewing it. I thought they did alot more with their style(the synth, string sections, etc.) but I think we share alot of the same opinions. I would give them an 8 out of ten. Why he didn't talked about Eula?
ikr. that song was spectacular
Love this album. Reminds me a lot of Queens of the stone age. But it's a really cool rock album and the songs are catchy as fuck. After one or two listens I already had many songs stuck in my head.

Would have liked a few more "Take My Bones Away" tracks but other than that im happy with it. I agree that Yellow is the better of the two aswell :)
Nas - Life is Good and Aesop Rock - Skelethon will be Anthony's next two reviews.
Are you gonna review Crocodiles' Endless Flowers? :)
Actually they live in Philly now, not Georgia
@Turdsplosion I disagree with that statement. I love prog and this is my favorite album from Baroness this far. It's more the underground fans that feel the need to be hipsters and deny it.
Hey Anthony, why dont you check a local band from my area, the guys are called Broken Betty, you should like it, cheers!
It'd be cool if you could do a special review of Aphex Twin. Just go over his discography and tell us your thoughts ad opinions, etc.
Well, I know you're swamped, but when you can - with a good amount of time - review Skelethon, deserves a lot of praise.
Haha how long are we gonna wait for the Aesop Rock - Skelethon review Senor Anthony
but i am finding many of my contemporaries really digging this record, and i can't understand why, so i will be giving it second and third chances in the future.
i don't necessarily miss the "metal", i miss the progressive (interesting) songwriting. in many ways this is a bold move by the group, in other ways it feels like a massive cop out to those who have closely followed th group since their groundbreaking First and Second EPs.

I think that one might be your best review so far
I dug this album... btw what are you bench pressing these days?
Sick show in Glasgow on Tuesday!!
Random question, how do you feel about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
you have the most interesting editing cuts
You still need to review Mark Lanegan's Blues Funeral album.
Board Up the House is easily the standout of these to discs for me. i can feel the passion and atmosphere that initially made me love this group, which is sorely lacking on the rest of these tracks.
Totaly agree with you about Mtns. loved the song so much just could not get over all the bullshit done to the vocals really ends up ruining a fantastic song. i dont think that ones ganna happen man, he just doesnt like wilson or akerfeld, but if you read this anthony, i do think you should just try it, im sure you have, but if you haven’t, you should because it is a different direction than normal. its still got the same personally as normal though i de say, but like you say, this could be the one. regardless, i know your busy, but ide like to hear your review of it if you can find the time.
Hey Anthony, you should review that Coin Locker Kid album that you put up on your website. Really weird and cool listen.
awesome review, loved the album
Feeling a light 9 to a strong 8 on the accent here. So many good treeyaks
I think we need to see a review of Periphery's 2nd LP "Periphery 2: This Time It's Personal".
thanks for reviewing this one!
You really know what you are talking about, and I really agree in much you say. I enjoy all your videos, keep it up :D
personally i love this album just as much as i loved red and blue, i think people need to open up to the music, they had to make some changes or they would just be making the same music over and over all bands make changes.
Review Constants' "Pasiflora", it'll be out soon
i really wanna get this on vinyl
I'm gonna say it again, even if you already commented on it ^^
A Place to Bury Stranger - Worship
by the way, thanks for Baroness. I was on the fence on this.
The blue album is just an epic mind fuck and I think blue and red are better but I still like this album
praises album gives 7
7 Is a good score
Soffish583822 yeah I guess your right. I wonder what he will say about purple

Grandiose Presentation; Indeed.
When will you post your favorites so far of you and cal? you said your would soon in a previous video.
Is that Adam Ant in the background?
it was just sitting in the background of one his reviews, a few weeks or so ago.
