“Unless you get the people who did Barbie Swan Lake, you’re not gonna get good animated dancing!” The sad thing is that I feel like animated dancing has always usually been taken for granted especially in the modern era. For the most part, dancing in modern animation is mainly usually for a dumb gag, so an animated “Cats” where the dancing is full on committed would be a great challenge for animators who do want to learn how to actually animate dancing. Not only did they make Misto straight, they took away his flamboyance which is canon in the frcking song about him??? Did Tomothy not listen to the music? Does he have low literary comprehension or something? They made Misto so boring. And Tugger... I can't even speak. They made him a heterosexual toe-sucker. They have destroyed my boys. Demeter nuzzling Munkustrap always seemed to me like gratitude. He almost got killed defending her from Macavity, I'd give the dude a nuzzle too. It doesn't even seem like a relationship hint in context. The wildest thing about Cats shipping, though, has to be the idea that cats are monogamous. They are very, very, very not that. Cats don't have 'mates'. Like, they absolutely form long-term and even lifelong bonds with other cats, but those bonds have nothing to do with mating. When it comes to mating they don't really discriminate much at all - a female in heat will solicit a male she normally can't stand, just because he's there and her ovaries are screaming and she needs a male to shut them up. Which is probably why there's no relationship buildup with Victoria and Plato. They're not IN a relationship. He's just the tomcat who finally steps up when she's ready. They don't pay each other any special attention the rest of the show, because he's done his part. Meanwhile she DOES spend quite a bit of time with Mistoffelees, because he's more 'bestie' material, and besties are much more important in cat society than sexual partners. Now, obviously the cats in Cats, while accurately reflecting feline society in a lot of ways, also have human qualities. So, you know, this is open to interpretation. But this fandom would be so much saner without the insistence on monogamous pairings.
I have a theory that it might come from The Warrior Cats fandom? I dunno if there's that much crossover between the Cats fandom and Warrior Cats fandom, but they're both popular on Tumblr and have Cat Religion. ...or it could be because monogamy is expected in our society to the point some people literally can't conceptualize anything else.
My headcannan is that Griz is Munk's bio mom and Macavity's and Tugger's adoptive mom (Munk being the middle child). And that Tugger's pissed at her for abandoning him and Munk because Macavity(as a kitten) was exiled and she went with him.
Finally just started watching, but I wanna comment one thing I noticed recently that makes me feel yucky as a fan of the musical... Victoria is originally a KITTEN. I know they changed her entire backstory (we don't need to get into it), but oh boy does it feel wrong Especially with the romance they shoehorned in with Misto - an adult (and at youngest adolescent) cat
Yeah that can be offputting at first glance. To be clear, though, 'kitten' refers to any cat under a year old, and many - if not most - female cats will have their first litter well before then. (That's why it's so important to spay them as soon as a vet deems it safe.) Victoria is having her first heat in the stage play, so she's probably at least 6 months old, which would make her young but no longer a child, in cat terms.

The biggest issue with Judy Dench is that she CAN'T sing!! They made her like almost a completely different character in the movie. Old Deuteronomy's singing voice is inherently important to the character. What were they thinking casting someone that sings like an old frail lady???
Taylor Swift playing the victim is so on brand that I assumed that she was the one playing Victoria, because I could totally see her writing a new solo where she throws a huge pity party for herself.
I assume that they decided to couple Mistoffelees and Victoria because they wanted young insecure men to have someone to identify with - someone that still gets the hot girl in the end. Not sure whether young straight insecure men are the main target group for the movie though ;-)
Someone else in the comments of the other video mentioned it might be aesthetics as Mistofelees and Victoria look like a bride and groom because of their fur.
