Produced in several countries or screened in different languages, whether a story of travelling or a remake: film is European in many regards. The question to be asked would be: What does film tell us about Europe and which Europe does it tell us about? How does it shape Europe? Does it fabricate a European legend at times? How can films be developed on a European level without getting lost in bureaucracy and a loss of identity? Does film need Europe? And more importantly: Does Europe need film?
There are countless ideas of Europe. Time and time again, they revolve around the meanings of periphery and centre, borders and openness and the relationship between them. But how do we move from the knowledge of the advantages of open borders and markets and a diffuse sense of commonality to the concrete? How can we create Europe where it does not yet exist? And how can we continue to work on the common ground of Europe?We are convinced that culture can contribute to democracy and freedom. Or does it all remain just a diffuse feeling?In the open format of the Agora, there are no limits to the interdisciplinary dialogue between scientists, practitioners and the public. Ob in gleich mehreren Ländern produziert oder in verschiedenen Sprachen gespielt wird, ob als Transiterzählung oder Remake: Film ist in vielerlei Hinsicht europäisch. Zu fragen wäre: Was erzählt der Film von Europa und von welchem Europa erzählt er? Wie gestaltet er Europa? Strickt er bisweilen eine Europa-Legende? Wie können Filme auf europäischer Ebene entstehen, ohne dass man sich in Bürokratie und Identitätslosigkeit verliert? Braucht der Film Europa? Und noch wichtiger: Braucht Europa den Film?
Es gibt unzählige Vorstellungen von Europa. Immer wieder geht es dabei um die Bedeutungen von Peripherie und Zentrum, Grenzen und Öffnung und um deren Verhältnis. Aber wie kommt man vom Wissen um die Vorteile offener Grenzen und Märkte und einem diffusen Gefühl von Gemeinsamkeit zum Konkreten? Wie können wir Europa dort erschaffen, wo es noch nicht besteht? Und wie können wir am Gemeinsamen von Europa weiter wirken?
Wir sind überzeugt, dass Kultur zu Demokratie und Freiheit beitragen kann. Oder bleibt alles doch nur ein diffuses Gefühl?
Im offenen Format der Agora sind dem interdisziplinären Dialog von Wissenschaftlerinnen, Praktikern und Publikum keine Grenzen gesetzt. Teil I und II gehen ineinander über.
