The reason Goku never saw that his son didn't want to fight was because Gohan had been in basically every fight every since Raditz showed up. Plus Gohan did actually want to be a martial artist when he was younger. In the time chamber Gohan was pushing himself very hard as well so Goku assumed he was ok with it again. Goku didn't think Gohan was going to be absurdly strong until the time in the chamber though. Of course now it's thrown in his face and he realizes he's been wrong for most of the time and he immediately tries to fix it. It's not a new concept, a dad thinking his son is like him.
That as well as think of gokus life. He killed his pops as a kid(well step dad... Ha piccolo) and was on his own as a child legit only knowing about war because he had to save the world damn near on a daily. So he legit had no idea. We see as dbz and dbs goes, he learns and becomes a waaaaayyyyy better father.
That's not all either. Gohan DID want to fight. He DID want to be like his father, and wanted to be a martial artist and save the world. He wasn't wrong in that regard. What Piccolo said in the original show was that Gohan, despite those feelings AND that ridiculously incredible power, he doesn't have the HEART of battle. He wanted to fight, but he was innocent. He was passive. He was not bold. That's why I loved #16's speech in this version. It perfectly displayed the other side of the perspective of Gohan. He was so powerful, has so much potential, but didn't have the heart. And it got wasted
Honestly though I would blame gohan for throwing off goku because if he didn't like fighting and didn't want to then he shouldn't have been in every major fight up til now. He could have stayed home with chi-chi and studied his tail off (see what I did there?) And he would be fine but he made the choice to participate even though he didn't want to.
Gohan didn't have a choice up until Namek, and at that point, felt obligated to revive Piccolo.

The song at the end is an English cover of the song that played in the Japanese version of this episode when gohan went super saiyan 2 .

Nah, it's entertaining but I wouldn't say they do better than the early Funi dub (as much as I dislike it due to the numerous inaccuracies and liberties taken with the source material) and definitely not better than the Kai English dub or the original (Japanese).

I've always enjoyed the message behind SSJ2 Gohan crying during his transformation then stopping is Gohan losing his innocence when he ascends. He has to leave his child self behind and grow up.

But remember Vegeta was a fool who allowed all this to happen .... A grown man let his pride doom everyone because he was interested in cell's hidden power??... That's amazingly stupid and crazy .... The dude completely had a plan for every single instance that happened, he had God level foreshadowing and rightfully thought that gohan enjoyed fighting because he's been in literally every fight the Z Fighters has been in. The only thing not accounted for was gohan's pacifism so ya. Official goku sucks, abridged goku might not be as dumb as he looks

No lie. The combination of the song and the image of gohan crying after releasing his full power made me tear up. Just the fact that it was 4 years of waiting for this moment and TFS fucking nailed it made me and apparently alot of other people very emotional for that moment

THE ORACLE 1173 16 wasn't a cyborg, he was fully mechanical which is why cell couldn't absorb him and why Bulma could simply repair him

You know if Piccolo never took Gohan after Radiz’s death he would have been a bookworm his entire life (when Goku introduces Gohan to his friends for the first time he says Chichi doesn’t want him to be a fighter and from his birth to his introduction Goku doesn’t train him) also if Piccolo is that worried and knows about Gohan’s dislike of fighting why help Goku train him for the Androids, let him go in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber or just fight in general.
Lol always trips me out how people forget that Piccolo was the one who pulled the trigger that killed Goku in the 1st place

Gohan Transformation song is called Unmei no Hi. Its what was used in the original Japanese dub during its original run. TFS got a few people to help remake this classic.

Goku just wanted his son to be like him, goku honestly is a great father while keeping his own personality. He would die for gohan any day of the week and even though he learns gohan isn't meant to be a fighter like him he accepts that. He just wanted gohan to carry on his legacy. Goku is called a shit father as a joke but in all honesty, rewatching Z, goku has faults but is easily one of the most realistic takes on a great father in anime

The Pidgey bird flying away just before Gohan goes SSJ2 is a metaphor for the spirit of the android who had just given up his very existence to help Gohan achieve victory and save the world. Like a bird that escapes its cage, Android 16 is gone forever, never to return. Life itself was the only thing he loved more than his beloved birds, and he sacrificed it to save everyone from the absolute evil that was Cell.

Man...I wish I was able to see what people love so much about this episode. I loved the past 10 episodes of this series. I thought they were hilarious and I enjoyed that serious moments far more than I probably should have considering this is a comedy series. And yet, I feel none of that here. A good chunk of the jokes felt weak or repetitive to me and the serious moments didn't feel all that interesting. Given this took a year to make, I'd argue this feels overwritten. Although I'm aware this is only part 1 of 3 so I'll be interested to see what's next.
I'm not gonna sit here and be like "This is the worst episode" or some crap, but I can't really say I'm interested in rewatching this like I do the rest of the series. And I guess that's just my loss considering this was the moment everybody, including me, wanted out of this series since it began, Gohan's transformation. But either way, he's SSJ2 now so let's see how his personality changes.
The thing that I don't like is that they called gohan a coward when in reality he is probably the farthest thing from being a coward and that cell said that gohan thinks he's the best(note: I don't know if 16 or cell were just trying to piss off gohan but to me it sounded like they were saying what they thought was the the truth.).
No it’s understandable. It’s been a year and we have high hopes. I agree that it seems a little repetitive but eh. I’m just happy they gave this to us.
If you view it as a "comedy series" and were expecting a series of funny gags, then I understand you might feel disappointed. This episode, which may or may not be their last, was not meant to be a parody, it was meant to be a tribute. They paid due respect to the most critical moment in the series and didn't cheapen it with stupid jokes just for laughs. And they fixed Funimation's major screw-up and showed the SSJ2 transformation the way it should've been from the start. That's why people love it.
anthony gomez This episode effectively highlights both Goku and Gohan’s flaws and shows some growth from both of them. Goku realizes his mistake and attempts to rectify it, even though he isn’t successful now we both know how he does it later on. Gohan finally realizes that there comes a time when you must fight to protect what you love. Holding good values but standing by as evil things happen is nearly as bad as committing those evil things, especially if you have the capacity to stop it. And thus Gohan takes another step forward in his character development
+oneeyednarn Funimations screw ups lol Funimation never referenced Gohan as a coward. Just a kid who doesnt want to kill. He will fight the good fight but at the time he understood and was just afraid of what he would do. And then we had Kai. Funis major screw up? This isnt the first funi dub of the Frieza saga which was the only screw up they had.
