I really love Android 16 speech in this and how it's less about "unleash your hidden power" like in the original and more about the dangers of the rigid pacifism when you need to act. Yes, violence isn't a good way to solve problems but standing on the sidelines and doing nothing to stop sth evil because "violence isn't the answer" is not what you should do, because like 16 said, you're simply letting the evil triumph. It's a lesson that Gohan needed to learn.

I'm a 35-year-old man who doesn't cry a lot, but this brings me to tears every time I watch it. DBZA is, as far as I'm concerned, DBZ's ultimate dub, although unofficial. It came into my life at a time I was struggling with depression and it helped so much I couldn't begin to describe. Never laughed so hard at anything, especially during the "Freezer" saga. This moment is emotional to me for a lot of reasons, firstly because I was already emotionally attached to DBZA and the hiatus made the hype that even greater. Secondly, this was actually what got me into DBZ when I was 12, Goku's and then Gohan's fight against Cell was the first thing I watched, and I got instantly hooked. But then I started growing up and the low quality Brazilian dub started sounding dumber and dumber to me (I'm from Brazil), and, having the privilege of the Internet since I was a kid, I learned English and decided to watch the FUNimation Dub, which is far superior to the Brazilian one, and watched the entirety of DBZ on it. That fact made finding DBZA even better, because someone who never watched the Funimation dub would never get many of the jokes.
The song at the end, over Gohan's transformation was performed by Lawrence Simpson, aka MasakoX, who voices Goku and Gohan in Abridged. The ending of part 1 is one of the most masterful I've seen in any media. The fact that they manage to bring up so much emotion in a parody is incredible, jokes are generally really bad at keeping the tone consistent enough for the emotions to build up that high (the MCU knows something about that xD). It works in part because they don't hesitate to just keep a scene of someone standing there and transforming for literally 1 minute and 40 seconds, almost 10% of the whole video just for this scene with no joke and no action. I also like how for once, the reaction shots that DBZ is famous for using as ridiculous filler actually serve the scene in this case. Of course a lot of the credit definitely goes to the original soundtrack that they remixed here, it's perfect for this scene. The animators who got the idea for the tears going upside were also genius here cause that part was not in the manga. And it's not even nostalgia for the original japanese music, I've read but not watched DBZ before watching this so I did not know the song.
Out of all the different versions of Gohan's transformations, this one made me cry. It's the realization that Goku and 16 expected an 11 year old child to commit murder.
to be fair this was also a classic case of there being no alternative. as the saying goes (and 16 referenced this) all it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing. gohan was the good person doing nothing. is his mentality understandable? absolutely, as you said, hes 11. nobody should be put in a position like that, much less a child. but he was the only person able to stop cell, and cell was not willing to be talked down, or stopped by any other means. basically, violence is never a good solution, but sometimes all the alternatives are worse, and its simply a case of the least bad option available to you.

Absolutely loved you pointing out cells empathy towards Yamcha, got the linkin park reference and your emotions throughout this entire episode 😭 Great reaction!
there were two back-to-back linkin park references and im not sure if she got both or not. She got the "In The End" one but right before it Gohan was referencing "One Step Closer" also by linkin park.
@@alannorris3819I'm glad they made the short where he basically broke baseball for being too good, so they paid him a billion dollars to retire. Baseball owner "Yamcha, all you do is win" Yamcha 🥲😊
19:39 "Was that a Linkin Park reference?" Actually, yes. The band was a popular choice for AMVs back in the halcyon days of TH-cam and got used quite a few times for DBZ, so they threw in a cheeky reference to its legacy. Chester had also passed away about a year before this episode was posted, so it was kind of a tribute to him at the same time.
I love that they play Gohan's transformation completely straight. It's so good. Also, I love that your reaction is just awe. It's clear you really do love DBZ and Gohan specifically. So glad you got to see this episode finally. It's so good and it's clear how much you loved it.
I love how when Piccolo is yelling at Goku, when Goku asks everyone else their thoughts, Cell just shouts up to him while beating Gohan ‘No one’s perfect!’ 🤣
I love DBZA so much for exactly what you talked about at the end. It's not just that it's funny, well acted, and captures the characters and plot well. But on top of all of that, it has a deep respect for moments in the original that were serious, somber, or downright cool. Gohan SSJ2, Goku SSJ, Vegeta's final flash, Trunks finding Gohan dead, and so many others. The comedy always makes room for moments that deserve it. And from all the details you talked about in this scene to the way the actors tribute the dub VAs, it's so obvious that a lot of thought and care goes into it.
The fact that we originally had to wait an entire year before this episode came out was absolute torture but the payout when we finally got it was so beautiful & definitely worth the wait
I always tear up a bit during the transformation. The speech, the music, the yell and Gohan's tears floating up always sends shivers down my spine. It always hits me hard. Seeing that made me so happy I was able to see this series through
Every time I rewatch this show, this episode brings out the tears. I well up throughout 16's speech, get a chill down my spine when the music starts going, and every single time ~without fail~ Piccolo's "..Gohan.." at 22:40 breaks me. 11/10 A++ best animated series of all time.
Ever since you said you're a Gohan fan, I think I speak for all of us when I say we couldn't wait to see your reaction to this episode. I can only imagine how amazing seeing that scene at the end must've felt for you.
Everything, every word that comes out in this chapter, every sentence, every speech, every dialogue... is SO TOP NOTCH IT HURTS. And then the special cover of the last song is so, so good (look up Jonathan Young's cover).
I genuinely teared up when it closed in onto Gohan with his tears floating upwards until there are none left. It's like his newfound determination, taking form in the burst of power, is literally wiping his tears away. That's the peak of the show for me :D
"I love that shot with Gohan crying, with the tears, and then they slowly go away..." That's called visual metaphor. The ability to communicate a message or an idea through visuals. Something I wish people did a lot more of.
You were not kidding about Gohan being your favorite character. You are going OFF on this man. To be fair, this is also probably my favorite version of Gohan as well. :) Edit: You're also spot on about seeing so many transformation of Gohan transforming for the first time and how GOOD this one is. I actually still get tears forming just from how amazing they did it. I also kinda like the angle they spun with Cell and 16 calling him a coward instead of kinda beating around the bush. I mean, the original has 16 basically telling Gohan that it's okay to fight and kill evil people, but this version really hammers it home: Being a pacifist in a situation where people are being slaughtered by a villain does not make you a good person, it only makes you a coward. I think that's sorta the exact speech that Gohan needed to hear to not only control his power, but also keep it going. I'd be willing to bet the reason he kept losing his incredible power was because his pacifist nature would take over. He'd snap, and then he'd think, "Oh man, what I'm doing is violent and bad," but 16 has just finished explaining to him that he needs to fight now. Really cool moment in the original, but even cooler in Abridged in my opinion.
It was my introduction to it, so it is the most emotional moment. But I gotta give the coolest to Vegeta and his sacrifice. I wish the Buu saga would end there.
Gohan going SSJ2 for the first time is probably the most epic moment in the whole anime. And the fact that TFS did such a good job and treated it with such respect, just shows the love that this series was made with. Speaks volume to the care and love these people had for DBZ
It's stuff like this that put DBZA head and shoulders above all the other abridged series. They knew when to be funny and clown on the source material and when to treat it with the true gravity it deserves. Even though I think they ended it at the right time, I still miss it so much! And also, the sheer effort to re-do the song and translate it!
No matter how many times I watch this transformation it will always get my emotions going. I remember watching this with subtitles when I was 18 on 56k internet. Finding each episode was tough but definitely worth the effort for such an amazing arc.
I have loved watching your reactions to dbz abridged. I've watched a lot of people but your commentary shows how you already loved the original series just like a lot of us, and it feels like a watch party with everyone in this community, even more so now that we've finally come to the 3 part ending. Thanks for your videos, after all this we'll miss your "sparking!"s
I've seen this so many times but I never noticed gohans tears going away and his expression change, thank you for that it makes the scene so much better
Team 4 star admitted in one of thier monthly updates why it took so long between episode 59 to episode 60 part 1. They got the rights for the song and got it translated and sung to be put in the transformation scene. Team 4 star wanted to do that scene perfectly. The music, editing, writing, voice over work and much more was done to perfection, you could tell they were real fans and wanted to do "right" as they say to DBZ and thier adbridged series, you could tell when watching it this was the ending that they wanted for thier series. And I can still say to this day, I think it's the best transformation scene ever to be done in anything Dragon Ball related, though the ultra instinct transformation was amazing as well and Gohans "new" transformation was something else in DBS Super Hero. It was truly an end of era.
23:30 that stunned silence is exactly what I said too. Even all this time later, I can hardly believe how much _justice_ they did Gohan here. Hasn’t diminished with time either.
Gohan. Listen to me. There are some foes who cannot be reasoned with. You are allowed to fight on the side of justice. Seize upon your anger. Wield it like a weapon. I understand your reluctance, but holding it in is pointless. Gohan, I love the animals and everything about nature. Protect them. For me.....they need you”
I’ve always loved the fact that 16 was specifically not someone Gohan knew well. They’re going to make a pretty good joke about it in the next part. Though for me, because 16 isn’t realistically a close family or friend lost like Krillin for Goku, the triggering rage is comes from knowing that if he had broken free sooner there is at least one death he could have prevented. It’s not the vengeance it’s the responsibility.
I always identified with Gohan for this reason. Hard to anger but when he's angry they you better run. When you make someone cry-level angry then you REALLY f'd up!
Fun facts time! TFS mentioned that the names of the Cell Jrs. are after the voice actors that gave voice to Cell in different dubs. And also, the song is 100% their creation, If I remember correctly, it was Kaiser who pushed for the song to be made, and they have this version, an instrumental and metal version on Spotify and YT.
You have one the best reactions to the epic climax I've seen on the tubes. Loved your raw emotion and how all-in you were in the moment, and your commentary of the whole thing after. GOOD JOB!
I'm so happy you know about the original version of the transformation because it gave me chills when I first saw them give it an homage when they put this episode out. I absolutely love it
The ending of the scene with gohan’s transformation ssj2 and with the music and the reaction gohan’s crying everything about it every time has me in tears!! 😭😭😭😭
10:33 Not that I'd ever actively recommend watching the film if you haven't already, but the fridge is in reference to the [metaphorical] shark jumping scene in Indiana Jones 4, where he survives a nuclear test by hopping into a lead lined fridge and gets flung *UNHARMED* away from Ground 0
I remember. They streamed the premier of each part of episode 60. Weekly. And each week, they did all previous parts of it. This episode. I 100% teared up and how blazzingly amazing it felt watching it. The hype and feels were perfectly melded together. Being able to watch them abridge this show made it's own little chapter in my life. Fantastic stuff.
I can get why Goku miscalculated. He never took his son to be a coward. His whole life he was surrounded by brave fighters, heck even Krillen and Yamcha were brave. That and the fact the lived alone in a jungle full of wild Animals when he was the same age as Gohan without any sign of fear.
Yeah, he always assumed everyone has a tough warrior heart. Gohan has PTSD from everything he's been through. Watched his father die, kidnapped by a green alien and received torture like training. Then namek saga , ginyu force and Frieza trauma. ( His neck was Snapped) Goku was very doting towards gohan. Always telling him how peou5he was of him. I may seem reckless but Goku Knew He could beat cell. He trained win him. It was just a psychological issues. Poor guy even sacrificed himself to save his Son and friends.
One of the great things about this series is that even though they're all about the comedy, they still know when to be serious and at times manage to do it possibly even better than the original.
Man. Gohan’s tears for the fallen, for being pushed past his breaking point, for being forced to become the warrior he didn’t want to have to be. All that, and then they dissolve away as he accepts both the responsibility and his own fate as the savior of Earth, damn this scene was good in the original and great here!!!!
I know this has been said so many times, but this is one of the moments the show said... "You see TOEI, you're not dealing with the average abridged series anymore"

17:40 I'll say this for Mr Satan, every once in a while he'll 'nut up or shut up', it's one of his few enduring traits. 19:45 It's actually a secret reference to an AMV made back in the day by a website called Temple o' Trunks. They did in fact use Linkin Park in that AMV, that specific song to boot. 👍 In case anyone is wondering what that music soundtrack is that they're singing at the end for gohan, it's called 'Spirit vs Spirit'.
When you said a long time ago you are a big Gohan fan and got upset about how dirty he go treated in the long run. I have been super excited and waiting to see your reaction to this one. Ü
The Dubbed version with Falconer music is iconic because of nostalgia but in reality, it misses the point. In the dubbed version Gohan's transformation is played as an epic moment of a character releasing their power to save their friends. In the original Japanese version it is about a child being pushed so far he snaps. It is actually a sad moment and TFS captured that.
Abridged is a comedy parody of Dragon Ball Z with the storyline preserved. But even in parody, this Gohan transformation gives you goosebumps. Those who watched it during the premiere had to wait a year for the 60th episode. Do you know what the pain was?

there were two back-to-back linkin park references and im not sure if she got both or not. She got the "In The End" one but right before it Gohan was referencing "One Step Closer" also by linkin park.
Cell's empathy to Yamacha was a way for TFS to make up for dogging him all series.
I love how when Piccolo is yelling at Goku, when Goku asks everyone else their thoughts, Cell just shouts up to him while beating Gohan ‘No one’s perfect!’ 🤣
except for Cell of course.
Put a bit of a new twist on "The day of fate has fin'ly come"
I always tear up a bit during the transformation.
Just putting this out there
The song
"Day of Fate ~Spirit vs Spirit~"
is on Spotify under TeamFourStars name
Its the tears falling upwards for me that gets me everytime
Isn't it soaring?
@@artistanthony1007 Like a bird 😢
I genuinely teared up when it closed in onto Gohan with his tears floating upwards until there are none left.
It's like his newfound determination, taking form in the burst of power, is literally wiping his tears away. That's the peak of the show for me :D
"I love that shot with Gohan crying, with the tears, and then they slowly go away..."
That's called visual metaphor. The ability to communicate a message or an idea through visuals. Something I wish people did a lot more of.
The Jonathon Young cover of Day of Fate is also amazing. It isn't melancholic, but way more intense.
You were not kidding about Gohan being your favorite character.
You are going OFF on this man.
To be fair, this is also probably my favorite version of Gohan as well. :)
Edit: You're also spot on about seeing so many transformation of Gohan transforming for the first time and how GOOD this one is.
I'm gonna die on that hill: Gohan turning SSJ2 for the first time is the coolest moment in all of DBZ.
Remember, Gohan got beaten for a year while we waited for this episode..hahaha
And Cell was thinking of Goku the whoooolllllle time.
This is why I watch reactions. I want to relive these feelings watching it in someone else’s face. That level of mind blown. Perfect.
I've seen this so many times but I never noticed gohans tears going away and his expression change, thank you for that it makes the scene so much better
gohans transformation in dbza gives me chill every time i see it and i watch this series often
Major credit to you for appreciating the MASTERY they displayed executing this ending. Still can't believe how well they did this
Fun fact, the names of all the Cell Jr.'s(save Vegeta Jr. Jr.) are the first names of various voice actors who've portrayed Cell over the years.
“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.”
I love that book so much, Kvothe love 💕
Kvooooothe!
Quick Fun Fact: all the Cell Juniors are named after voice actors who have played Perfect Cell previously, including Curtis 'Takahata101' Arnott.
I'm 90% sure they had the song made for the occasion. That's why you gotta love TFS, such commitment...
Rewatching these because i love your love for gohan, it's a true joy to watch.
I love it how the irony of when Cell says, "No one's perfect!" causes Goku to realize his mistake 😂
Your reaction to the song at the end was everything I wanted in this video :)
That english dub of gohans original japanese transformation is so hype. Especially it being sung by gohans VA here...aw man. Awwww man
Cell is the ONLY being that ever lookout for Yamcha. And I find it hilarious.
Oh yeah, Melon, we ALL still turn into kids when Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2. :D
Even in my 40s, it still hits me the same.
Same here. I cried and I'm a 31 year old.man 😂 I brought me back to when I saw it as a kid and how intense that moment was for me as a 4th grader
GOOD JOB!
This episode's Gohan transformation and next episode's "Bye" will take your emotions thru the ringer. They will always drag tears to one's eyes.
Fun Easter egg, the Cell Juniors are named after his voice actors
I'm so happy you know about the original version of the transformation because it gave me chills when I first saw them give it an homage when they put this episode out. I absolutely love it
The year wait was so worth it for this episode, where it pivots from silly parody to beautiful homage.
The ending of the scene with gohan’s transformation ssj2 and with the music and the reaction gohan’s crying everything about it every time has me in tears!! 😭😭😭😭
I love android 16 telling Gohan to "Grow Up you act as if your the only person suffering" God that sounds all too familiar 💯
I practically teared up during the SSJ2 transformation sequence. It was done immaculately!
Gohan’s lesson is valuable to EVERYONE. It’s why I love DBZA
Honestly, Yamcha probably could join the "done literally nothing wrong" club here.
Yep. Yamcha, Tien, and Piccolo. Everyone else messed up lol
10:33
Not that I'd ever actively recommend watching the film if you haven't already, but the fridge is in reference to the [metaphorical] shark jumping scene in Indiana Jones 4, where he survives a nuclear test by hopping into a lead lined fridge and gets flung *UNHARMED* away from Ground 0
“I don’t understand, where is the egg?” Hilarious!!!!😂
I can get why Goku miscalculated. He never took his son to be a coward. His whole life he was surrounded by brave fighters, heck even Krillen and Yamcha were brave. That and the fact the lived alone in a jungle full of wild Animals when he was the same age as Gohan without any sign of fear.
Yeah, he always assumed everyone has a tough warrior heart. Gohan has PTSD from everything he's been through. Watched his father die, kidnapped by a green alien and received torture like training. Then namek saga , ginyu force and Frieza trauma. ( His neck was Snapped)
Goku was very doting towards gohan. Always telling him how peou5he was of him. I may seem reckless but Goku Knew He could beat cell. He trained win him. It was just a psychological issues.
Poor guy even sacrificed himself to save his Son and friends.
TFS did DBZ so MUCH justice with the lines man =D
The 10 seconds of silence at the end says it all. I will always love "Red-Flag" Gohan.
One of the great things about this series is that even though they're all about the comedy, they still know when to be serious and at times manage to do it possibly even better than the original.
Man. Gohan’s tears for the fallen, for being pushed past his breaking point, for being forced to become the warrior he didn’t want to have to be. All that, and then they dissolve away as he accepts both the responsibility and his own fate as the savior of Earth, damn this scene was good in the original and great here!!!!
omg thank for for doing all 3 parts in one day. You go girl.
The refrigerator is a reference to Indiana Jones 4 where Indy survives a nuclear explosion in a refrigerator.
All of the Cell Jr names are people that have voiced Cell. Except Vegeta Jr Jr.
No matter how many times I watch this scene in abridged....THIS ONE FOREVER REMAINS LEGENDARY 🙌🏾🔥
Love your reactions so much, they always make my day.
Aww I’m glad.
Means a lot:)
yes the song is amazing with the tears and they go away and he gets focused and serious. Poetic
I know this has been said so many times, but this is one of the moments the show said... "You see TOEI, you're not dealing with the average abridged series anymore"
The filicide joke is my favorite joke of the series 🤣
Did this episode teach you that word or did you know it beforehand? I had to look it up lol. Doesn’t it mean killing a pony? ROFL
@@mbabaneamputee7725 kinda the opposite, I knew filicide meant killing your child but I didn't know what a filly was until I watched my little pony lmao
Ive seen this so many times and didnt expect to tear up again to gohans transformation
Hi Melon reaction great
The emotional moments of this episode man can't be understated
Gohan tering into super saiyan 2 is one of the best moments in Dragon ball z history
17:40
I'll say this for Mr Satan, every once in a while he'll 'nut up or shut up', it's one of his few enduring traits.
19:45
It's actually a secret reference to an AMV made back in the day by a website called Temple o' Trunks. They did in fact use Linkin Park in that AMV, that specific song to boot. 👍
In case anyone is wondering what that music soundtrack is that they're singing at the end for gohan, it's called 'Spirit vs Spirit'.
Don't you mean on of his "endearing" traits?
@@TheJetsetter Well no, because he does it a lot. If it was endearing I'd like it. 😂
Every time Gohan goes through a mountain, Piccolo yells about someone being dead.
When you said a long time ago you are a big Gohan fan and got upset about how dirty he go treated in the long run. I have been super excited and waiting to see your reaction to this one. Ü
There's a running gag on how cell loves yamcha if you haven't noticed its pretty great. Hes also the only one who's dna he doesn't have
loved that you got that linkin park reference... gohan was saying lyrics of "one step closer" and Perfect cell was saying lyrics of "in the end"
Hellsing Abridged fans: DO YOU?
