    I'm glad you are going this route Chris. I get calls daily on troubleshooting steps for equipment from people i don't know. I spent my entire adult life learning this industry and i didn't get here for free. Pay up people. This man deserves it.

      I know that pain, I've dabbled in auto, celluar, and computer repair and people give my number out willy-nilly to all their friends assuming I'm gonna fix thier shit for free. And for some reason they always assume I have parts on hand to give them for free as well.

    Totally understand your point (and agree with it)! I sent you a friend request about 5-6 years ago. You accepted and asked me if I needed lessons, I said no (couldn't afford it). I was a teen back then, it was a crazy feeling just to be talking to one of my idols.
    Anyway, appreciate your teaching! Thanks!

    I have never had a facebook account and im glad of it from what ive seen and heard its not worth the trouble. It may be ok for family and friends sharing stuff but there are a lot of strange folks in this world and you dont need that kind of stress. Raising a family and providing is stress enough. Keep up the good work and enjoy your profession because not many people love their jobs.

    Problem with the internet in general is that when using it people lose their sense of having boundaries with other people online. They think they can say and do what they want as the consequences are perceived to not exist as they do in the physical world.

    It's weird, i work in retail and that "takers" mentality is rampant there as well. I even had an older lady call up the store and demand I drive her husband home because he had too much to drink like i was a family friend or some shit. People are strange creatures.

  • @byrdman023able

    I always imagine in the music industry if people want shit for free, they've never jumped into it. Its pride swallowing sometimes and pays just absolute shit for the time you put into it. And if you do it for a living, expecting them to do shit for free is just stupid! Pay people for their time. I don't work for free, neither should someone else. I always think you doing these solo lessons is just A. A gift.
    B. Great marketing and C. A great way to showcase your talent. Anyways, Thank you, Chris. You owe nobody nothing.

    Very important video dude and very well said. I think unfortunately this kind of stuff comes not just to guitar teachers, but really any kind of "TH-cam personality" from he toxicness the perception of intimacy between fans and creators TH-cam establishes.
    Alot of either very young people or older people with poor social skills end up latching on to this person on the screen who seems to be talking directly to them and bring friendly with them....even though it's entirely 1 sided they get it into their head that this TH-camr is a close personal friend of theirs and thus they can say and ask all this horrendously personal stuff of them.
    My girlfriend had a relatively large youtube channel for a while and received exactly the same kind of behavior as described here. It's an issue with the TH-cam layout as a whole, the fan interaction and commenting side leads to a perception of intimacy with some people that absolutely does not match up to the reality, they then latch on and get very creepy.

    I think "rant" isn't quite accurate, You make really good points about the takers mentality which also seems to pervade the creative industries as a whole.
    Creative people are often not sufficiently rewarded for the work they do and think payment in "exposure" should be enough!
    So true the bit about the dentist lol

    I've had a couple of people ask me to teach them enough so they can go on their way... I've been playing for 10 years now and I'm still learning myself, but they assured me that they would keep going. I even made some sheets for them. They gave up after 1 lesson and just wasted my time... I also made a whole score for a friend and nothing came of it which also sucked.. Time to put my foot down i guess.

    The worst part about the "takers" is the sheer level of laziness. In today's world, there is nearly limitless information on TH-cam alone about guitar and music. Instead of hassling you for free and personal advice, they could have typed "increasing speed guitar" in the search bar and found out what they wanted to know. It's the absolutely inconsiderate and slightly narcissistic to push you to go out of your way. You already cover so much, and so do many other people, I'm sure someone else will have publicly provided the relevant info!
    Fans help provide the means for creators to create content, but without the creators, there would be no content to begin with. Mutual respect is important!

    As a graphic designer I know this aaall too well :T
    Here's what I wonder: I'm going to start uploading to my music channel more seriously soon and somewhere down the line I'm thinking about asking some musical youtubers to collab, nobody super big, and legit for the sake of just doing a song, but I worry if it'll come off just as scummy as if I'm trying to piggyback off of them and waste their time?

  • @LegendClayon
    @LegendClayon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well Chris while what you say is completely understandable it is unreasonable and in my opinion kinda stupid to go with the mentality that everyone who writes to you has this malicious plan to drain everything they can from you for free. Perhaps some people just send messages that are actually in a way irrelevant only to get some kind of acknowledgement from a guitar teacher that they've learned a lot from. There are weirdos out there and you of course have a right to your own privacy. But I think to throw out that you think in such a way is kinda rude to people who support you, actually want to learn from you and respect you as a guitar teacher. Much respect! Cheers!

    • @TSgitaar
      @TSgitaar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, I think it is unreasonable to expect someone (who isn't your friend or family) to give up their spare time to help them with anything, especially if it is work related. Chris is a guitar teacher, so if you want something from him (a tab, advice, or a evaluation), pay him. Then he will help you.
      I am a guitar teacher as well, and I get a lot students who keep asking me for things outside of the lessons (in my free time). If you go down that road too much, you will end up with very little pay for a lot of work. But it is hard to draw the line sometimes, so I definitely get the message that Chris is sending here. It isn't rude from Chris imo, he is just protecting his valuable time.

    I think this takers mentality is especially present in music, referring to the Napster days and Metallica. Why would you expect a band to give out their work for free? People don’t understand that making music is a job like everything else and if you work hard you should get money out of it. That is reasonable in every other job, but as soon as a musician wants to make money he/she gets shit for it.
