James and the bassists have always been great musicians in metallica. They were always the ones that made the band special imo. Hetfields right hand alone I think is pretty heavy metal defining.

I think Kirk needs a producer in the studio. The documentary on the recording of the Black Album showing Bob Rock tearing him until he came up with one of his greatest solos, The Unforgiven, makes me think that while it can be unpleasant, this is the process that works best for him. There are a lot of excellent musicians that need a good producer in the studio to bring out what they are truest capable of. Unfortunately when you’re a multimillionaire in the biggest band in the world you can decide you don’t want to go through that process anymore.

Kudos for the Opeth shoutout! Those guys are a prime example of changing the direction of the sound but staying true as musos, very well said

That was embarrassing, I can't imagine becoming that comfortable in your ability to where you become so careless with your performance.

I had similar thoughts listening to Hardwired. So many great songs but the lead stuff was pretty lacking

Kirk‘s playing totally fits Metallica. I couldn’t imagine them with a technically perfect player. Kirk has lost it somehow after the Black album, but I think over the past 2 years he kinda raised from the ashes again. I think most of the listeners are pretty okay with what he plays.

Now that you've mentioned Opeth as one of your Favorites, Please upload the solo lesson of Burden and Lepper Affinity. I was asking for this so long and will be highly obliged if you do so!
