Fighting in Armour - Half-swording and Historical Techniques

  • With the development of full plate armour fighting against a knight became more and more difficult. Slashes and cuts became obsolete and the only possibility was piercing, hence Half-swording.
    In this video we practice several techniques from Gladiatoria manuscripts.
    Gladiatoria (MS German Quarto 16) is a German fencing manual probably created between 1435 and 1440.

    For people thinking this is too slow, remember that these are actual techniques for wounding and killing. Done at full force they can be lethal even while in full harness and using a dull blade. The sword in half sword is frequently used as a grappling lever and can magnify the force sufficiently to break bones or the spine. This is a particular problem in harness because it's so difficult to see and feel what's happening. The safer way to fight in armor is to do what they do in battle of nations and just bang on each other's plates for a few minutes. But it's not an effective way to kill your opponent. The methods shown in the treatises are for killing, and must always be approached with great caution.

      ***** Very well said. As a matter of fact even if we did it slowly and paying attention my friend still got a light wound in the left arm probably while doing one of the techniques the blade slided gently through his arm and still cut him lightly (dull blade + gentle = cut xD) and yes you could easily dislocate a shoulder with these, very effective techniques

      Also. they're demonstrating (Potentially lethal, or crippling) techniques for the audience. It's not "Realistic" to view this side-on, but the camera is positioned there, as the illustrator was in the treateses, so you can see what the hell is going on. If this (Grappling) was done in real time, from "Realistic" angles, through the vision slit in a sallet, you'd get even more comments asking what the hell is going on? "Well, actually," this is for education. Not "Realism."

    • @MisdirectedSasha
      @MisdirectedSasha 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +DonWoschto With the weapons they have (general purpose swords without armour-piercing tips designed to pass through mail) it wouldn't make that much difference. If Metatron was using some of the anti-armour weapons from the 15th century (such as a poleaxe) then there would be *quite* a difference :P

    • @DonWoschto
      @DonWoschto 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MisdirectedSasha Why wouldn't it make much of a difference wearing a plate or a mail? A thrust from a sword could probably slice through the mail but not the plate. Or am I missing something here? Edit: How do you know the swords' points wouldn't go through a mail?

    Great video! I really liked how you demonstrated the attacks slowly, so that the untrained eye of a non-swordsman (like most of us, I'd guess) can understand what was going on!
    Also, I really liked how you decided to show your armour's "stats" (mainly the "slash resistence" part haha). Only thing that I was hoping to see was the other knight's "stats" too...

    Im not very familiar with the German Fencing manuscript but I am familiar with the Italian manuscript of Fiore and I believe you may be doing some of these incorrectly. With proper footwork you should be stepping behind your opponent when in the bind while putting the pommel past their right shoulder. This would allow you to throw them over your leg and finish them. If you're simply hitting their off hand with your pommel they could just let go and back away.

    Fighting against armor, however it's advisable to wear armor, if you have time to put it on. There's opposite fantasies here: The legendary hero that uses skill, and speed to overcome the oppressive knight, or dragon, or whatever. As opposed the the knight that lives in shining armor, with a magnet in the back to stick his greatsword to. Just walking around like that, all day, with a pommel sticking up right around the back of his head, in case of Dragon. The reality is of course that Knights had to fight unarmored, because they couldn't just call a time out, to go get their squire, and sit down by the arming cart while they buckled, and laced into full field-plate. So, I'm assuming that at some point, someone armed with just a sword had to take on someone much better armored WITH A SHIELD. I also have to point out that shields were a thing, a hell of a lot easier to strap into than even a set of gauntlets, and rather effective against most half-swording techniques, because of reach, and area of coverage.

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just reading through the comments, I have to wonder how many of them have actually ever put on Gauntlets. Just for example, themselves, without help, on both hands? I assume that Knights had to half-sword without wearing gauntlets, simply because they barely had time to draw the sword, but not put on gauntlets (Which they had conveniently hanging from their belts.) Mainly, it's people arguing with historical combat experts, who actually own a suit of fitted harness, because they've binge-watched The Witcher, or is a big fan of the games.

    Hey man! Do you have any suggestions on gauges? I have 14 gauge legs, arms and and helmet but I'm hesitant to wear my 16 gauge breastplate in love steel combat? Great video by the way! Always great to see your stuff.

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Floyd Keim III Thank you very much I am glad you like the video.
      Ye the concept with gauce is that simple, thicker if you want to fight with it, thinner if you want to wear it for the looks.
      But to get more detailed, I would go for thinner metal in same cases even if you want to fight, and that is if you use light weapons, such as shinai or calimacil or stuff like that.
      If you want to fight with metal blunt weapons though use thick gauge at all costs, because you don't want to get injured.
      ;)

    • @MisdirectedSasha
      @MisdirectedSasha 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Floyd Keim III Honestly a 16 gauge breastplate over a gambeson is fine. Unlike in, say, movies or Battle of the Nations, people shouldn't be hacking away at your plates if they're doing it right. The mail around your armpit will probably end up taking the lion's share of the blows. 16 gauge is fine for breastplates, gorgets, and helmets, and your bracers and greaves and things can be 18 gauge if you want. Of course, if you do SCA fighting or (god forbid) ACL you might want something a little stronger.

    question: which is harder to maintain? chainmail or plate armor? what happens if the chainmail gets rusty? is it true that they put in a barrel of sawdust and roll it around? sorry armor noob here :)

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ilikewasabe Hi !
      For a chainmail, you can preserve it in a barrel of sand. It will prevent the chainmail to rust. Moving the barrel when the chainmail is rusty will apply an abrasive effect that will polish your chainmail as if it was brand new.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ilikewasabe Maybe for drying. Plate armor is pretty nasty as it rusts very fast (leather is atttracts moisture, fat of the wearer...). Chainmail is self-cleaning to some extent as rust rubbs off during the movements. Repairs are also way easier.

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anyway : often there is chainmail under plates (in some extends) so you have both problems in one when having a plate armour.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** First knights started to put a brigandine over their mail, then a massive plate, but then they only used a gambesson with patches of mail to cover the exposed areas under their plate armor.

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      edi I am sorry but this is absolute thinking. Transition took a century, not with brigandine exclusively, in fact brigandine could be marginal in some regions. You had plenty of cuirass or equivalent over mail, with grieves added and afterward arms protection, half or plain. In all that time chainmail stayed under. Everytime you had this configuration. Then it evolved in full plate. And only then : patches.
      In any circumstances : those parches needed to be cleaned up too...

      +Metatron Some your armour doesn't look like it fits you very well. Your mail skirt seems to be falling off of you at one point, and your breastplate seems a bit loose and it looks like it comes down too low; it should stop at the bottom of your rib cage. Also your shoulders look a bit big (they really don't need to be). I can't really tell what the fitment of the legs is like, but from experience, your leg armour is your own worst enemy unless it fits really well (I made my own legs out of leather and brigantine; it took me a month to get it right).

    • @MisdirectedSasha
      @MisdirectedSasha 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear ya there. There are only two ways to get good armour:
      1. Pay somebody a f**kton of money to make it for you.
      2. Trial and error.
      Depending on how much time you have on your hands, you can make fairly protective armour parts yourself; bracers being probably the easiest. Also if you're looking for a cheap breastplate, you can find some good ones; I use this one: www.kaswords.com/medieval-italian-14th-century-globose-breast-plate.aspx
      This is what my armour looks like now: imgur.com/gallery/ZKHLVfZ/new
      The first two times I wore it to fights I had this nasty problem of my cuisses slipping down and immobilizing my knees, which I only managed to solve about a week ago.

      +Daniel De Villa (Bill B. Bill)
      I think it is possible, but not the best option to perform Half swording on Katana since the blade is slightly curve and not emphasize on piercing. (but it will still do some tho.)
      And talking in the manner of Half swording by grabbing the blade with both hand to have a sword as an improvised mace/hammer, it would rather be a worse choice since Tsuba (guard) and Kashira (pommel) are not that much of a mass that would provide a good blunt impact force through armor.

    • @presorchasm
      @presorchasm 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Daniel De Villa (Bill B. Bill) i guess it can?
      but i don't think it will be that effective since katana is nov very good for piercing. plus, that curve tho.

    I feel like I would not walk towards my foe while halfswording. You're just presenting your fingers begging to bet hit hard, and you'll get a fracture. I would start with my regular two handed techniques and seamlessly go in and out of halfsword by dropping the pummel and grabbing the blade (with the pinkie towards the tip and the thumb towards the guard), and vice versa, depending on the range.
    And in the event where my foe trips and fumbles for a second while getting up, I would drop the guard, while keeping the midblade in my left hand, grab the tip of the blade in my right hand, and just heave it over my shoulder and straight into the ground with the weight of my body. Murder stroke. Like being hit in the head with a baseball bat, only it's a longer base ball bat with a weightier pointier tip. Helmet or no helmet your neck will just give way and you will go down on the ground to squirm in agony.
    Alternatively, if you successfully trip your foe and he falls on his back, grab the midblade with your left hand (poing down), put your pummel in your armpit and one side of the cross guard close to your shoulder (like you'd do with a jousting lance), and then just literally step into the other guy, driving your sword into the ground. If he has his back on the ground and your sword is pointy enough, and you're heavy enough, either your sword will break, or the rings of his armor will (do aim at the hauberk not into a chestplate). If you do that he will be _absolutely super dead on the spot don't even call an ambulance_ .

    I consider halfswording as a sad atempt to keep the sword relevant in an age where it became more and more obsolete. It works but its far from the best way to deal with armor considering the fact that there are a multitude of weapons better at dealing with armor.

      +gabbagundam Did you forget about the people that don't have top tier full plate armor? Every peasant didn't have an old suite sitting in the basement ya' know?

    Good try at half-swording. I'm sure you don't need me to nitpick your armour for you ;) but I guess you work with what you have.
    Here is my main criticism of your technique (I've been doing a lot of armoured combat lately and I've done HEMA for over a year).
    Don't be shy about following through with the techniques. If you watch people doing armoured combat, you'll see that there is very little gentleness to the art. If your opponent is wearing some decent bracers, try to have him (her?) resist (passively, by trying to push through with their attack or parry) and see if you can wind them onto the ground or even just compromise their structure. You aren't trying to actually hurt your opponent, but with a bit of practice you can do the drills at speed so it looks like you are.
    If there's a HEMA club near you, you should definitely try to get to a few classes. Most HEMA instructors I know of like it when their students come with knowledge and interest in historical treatises and everybody benefits from comparing different interpretations.

    If you want to, me and my pals could make this combat stunts for you, for free of course, just let me know which techniques you would like to show and we shoot it. We have way better replicas and we posses the skill to show it in the way it looks cool AF. :) Armoured or in historical civil clothes. I'll be glad to help. :)

    11. century (unrivited, dekoration) chaimmail Armor, not propper paddet, a greathelmet witch no early bascinet under it, against a fantasy 15 centuryish full plate armor with a 16th century maximillian helmet , figthing with dekoration swords, i understand you want to show something but its not very good maybe just in gambeson with part mail or part plate or even a brigandine or coat of arms it whould look better...

    I hate to leave a negative comment, but I just have to.
    Metatron's plate armor looks utterly ridiculous. The brestplate goes all the way down to the belt.
    The strangest thing is that Metatron knows how a proper armor should look like: he even makes a video about it called "Good armor vs Bad Armor".
    So why the hell is he wearing this tin can is beyond my understanding.
    Dear Metatron, please make sure to avoid such shameful mistakes in the future. I'm pretty sure your friend KnyghtErrant can help you out with some tips for obtaining proper gear.

    really they used swords like that ? Why not just a bo staff instead. or a club. Interesting disarming moves but i have never seen anybody use their swords like that.
