    I've begun to love tinkering with my bike and doing work on it myself. The other day, I switched out my handlebars and installed new brake levers and cables all by myself! I felt so proud! Thanks for inspiring me to ride my bike! :D

    Wheel building is so satisfying but I have to say my first set was quite stressful but once you get in the flow its a nice process of focus and seeing things take shape, become true in all dimensions - I think it gives you more of an appreciation and mechanical sympathy.

    • @probablyriding

      I enjoyed the flow and the guidance of Rookey Bike helped with the stressful part.

    Thanks for covering Rookey bikes. I saw his work on YT at the Portland Bike Maker's Show and was blown away at his craftsmanship. I'm amazed at how much skill he has for the limited time he has been a frame builder. He's a tremendous talent.

    After 40 years of tinkering with bikes, I decided to try my hand at wheel building back at the start of the pandemic. Thoroughly enjoyed it. And it’s quite satisfying to ride on wheels that you’ve built yourself.
    A great resource for me is ‘Wheel Building’ by Roger Musson. It’s an e-book that you can find online for 9 pounds (yes, he’s English). I read several wheel building guides prior to picking this one up, including the classic by Jobst Brandt, but none ‘spoke’ to me like Roger’s book. Highly recommended and a valuable resource.
    Good luck with your rebuilding journey.

    Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love riding it as a matter of fact I have over 4k km on it. It's just I get a wee bit envious of the gorgeous bikes I see.

    I started my first wheelbuild 1,5 years ago out of necessity since I couldn't find any nice silver hubs with silver spokes and rims. I since had to replace a handful of nipples due to me squashing them when building the wheels :D - I've built a couple of wheels for my vintage bikes since then, because they come with 126mm O.L.D. and you don't find those prebuilt anymore. Being able to wheelbuild opens up a whole world of opportunites, so kudos for learning it and getting into it. (I used a video from a trials rider Ali Clarkson - cannot reccomend enough!)

    You're a brave man for tackling wheel-building. I have Jobst Brandt's book on wheel building and a truing stand, but have not summoned the patience and self-forgiveness to try it.
    Also, I'm here for the swearing at cars. Don't take that away from us.

      Rookey was there to guide me patiently. Fuck cars!

    • @donttouchthisatall
      @donttouchthisatall 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      do it! - I find the only daunting task to be determining spoke lengths. But online calculators are really helpful. If you can, measure your hubs and rims ERD before you order your spokes. it's much more rewarding to have the right length of spokes from the get go, than to realise halfway thru the wheelbuild that they are either too short, or too long. :D (happend to me). Also, patience is key. And start with a 3cross lacing pattern. :)
