    Man I'd be kind of terrified to do something with that many critical dimensions. You make it looks like a walk in the park. Truly showing what it means to be a professional.

      @@TheMetalButcher Of course it does and Chris Maj is an enormously skilled machinist.. Dude could turn out this item without CNC, but it would take longer and I'm not sure the dimensions would be as accurate.

    I assume this has further to go before it's done. But might I ask. Is it sent to be hardened after this stage and won't that Harding change amsine tiny amount if the specific size if this piece of metal . Impressive work her whoever did it. Just amazing

    Some lathes are so large, they have a control cabin on the carriage for the operator to sit inside.

    What type of jaws you are using? Does they leave any marks on the shaft?

    • @ChrisMaj
      @ChrisMaj  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Original hard jaws but on finished part I'm using aluminum shims. You're Polish right?

    When you're running jobs like this do you need to supervise the machine or in general are you comfortable just 'setting' and forgetting? It looks like some of those passes take a while.

    • @ChrisMaj
      @ChrisMaj  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We do have to stick around the machine. I mean mistakes happen but you wouldn't want your boss to find out you messed up the part cause you weren't watching your machine. We don't do hundreds of small parts where you maybe can afford to scrap one or two, if I scrap this shaft someone is not gonna be very happy.

      @@ChrisMaj Hi sir. What would you say are the biggest diffrences running a teach in machine like in your video and a CNC machine with live tooling and a 12 tool turret?
      Kind regards.

      @@ChrisMaj A machine with a toolpost like the machine in this video with an x and y axis which can be controlled CNC wise. But with a tailstock which you have to operate manually. If that makes sense.

    • @ChrisMaj
      @ChrisMaj  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mjmj5224 Live tooling and 12 tool turret might be good for someone who's running automated production where the machine runs part after part. In my case we are a repair machine shop, so most of the time we are doing single new parts or repairs to the old part and sometimes I have to change setups and tools 3-4 times a day. So I guess it's just comes to what you need.

    How do you setup tool offsets when you change tools?

    • @ChrisMaj
      @ChrisMaj  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are all measured in tool offsets. You just call out to tool number you need.

    • @jnsfrahm

      So they have a fixed spot in the tool post then. Thanks for the reply.

      I have this calculator that you enter your tool nose radius and your required finish (16/32/63) and it will give you your feed per revolution. It's not perfect but it's pretty close.
