      Haha, somebody knows what he's thinking about. You are right about that, but the grinding marks are on old spacers that go on the line shaft between bevel gears .

      Nice job, long shafts are a pain! What program software do you us? I can tell the CSS is on because the RPM changes with the diameter.

    Nice work Chris ! Can you explain one time the steps you take to make long parts like this to keep it straight ? What is youre step plan from start to finish a long part. Like what side you ruff cut first, where to put you're steadyrest, how much stock you leave for finishing, where to indicate . And why you take those steps in you're plan to make a part .
    I think it will help people a lot to understand it more what it takes to make long parts within tolerances. Greatings Michael

      The grinding marks are on old spacers that go on the line shaft between the bevel gears. This was a repair job so they used some old parts.

    Great video as always Chris! Were you forced to turn away from the chuck because of the length of the part and location of the different features? What introduces the runout on the finished part when you turned it all between centers? Internal stresses in the material? The chuck and/or the steady rest causing stress on the material?

      Yeah, the shaft was long and it had that flange. I think it has a lot to do with the type of material you use. If you watch my other line shaft video you will see that thing just went south on me. We had to send it for straightening and stress relief and then I was able to finish it. So yeah, most of the time it's the material, but also the tools you use and you can't take big cuts cause it puts too much pressure on the shaft and you will never get it to run straight.

      I'm betting, too, that some slop is from the shaft sagging a little under its own weight, like a long steel cable sagging from its unsupported weight....... just maybe?

      I often make pump shafts that are up to 86” long that have around 0.0004” runout tolerance from end to end, with several dimensions also toleranced to 0.0004”. And threads. On a manual lathe that was commissioned in the 1950’s 😂
      It’s all about the set up. If you don’t get your workpiece running true from the start, you’re screwed.

    Nice job. I always struggle with the longer shafts on My lathe haha. Does this lathe have a chip conveyer? You seem to do alot of jobs where there is alot of materiale to be removed.it would suck to showel All that haha

      @@ChrisMaj thanks for the response..the reason i was asking about chuck and T.S pressure is, i run alot of shafts, 60 inches up to 130inches in length, and have a decent method, but i would like to fine tune the pressures and have not had any luck finding any info that i can decipher...my machine has a graph plate on it for pressures but ive been unable to figure it out...anyways, awesome work u did on the shaft...👍

    This was really neat... Does anybody know, if this alloy 1045, after say, it has been totally machined round, with say less then (0.001") or run out, while still being this long, and you left it chucked up on the lathe, and then went on vacation/holiday, would this example start to sag, from its own wait, in that amount of time, that length, this alloy 1045? Just curious... This was a really neat video. I could only imagine the time it took to hog off just one pass, let alone 50 passes to get to size requested... DAAAAAAAAAAYS...

      @@drubradley8821 time and sag are not related. It's machined with a steady rest so that it is kept reasonably straight. As soon as it is off it's not straight anymore. All steel is like a spring until it isn't. There is only elastic deformation which springs back. Permanent or plastic deformation if it is bent too far.

      It's all done between centers so there isn't much to indicate. You just have to make sure you don't move the shaft to one side with your chuck jaws. Feed 3:10 ,11:30. You can also check out this video th-cam.com/video/d9lerP3yx0I/w-d-xo.html
