I'm kind of surprised that even in 2023 there isn't more interest in dual camera binocular FPV drones for the addition of depth perception through the VR goggles.
Nice video. Can you record the footage Side by Side and post it on youtube? Then people could view it as 3D, theres loads of side by side content around.
Just search SBS 3D on you tube and you'll see the format the video needs to be in, then as long as you have recorded both camera feeds there are plenty of online tutorials explaining how to format the video. A lot of the fatshark goggles and 3d tv's will then display the SBS 3d video in 3d.
I bought a Blackbird 3d cam , but am struggling now figuring out which goggles are capable. I have the Skyzone 03O but only seem to get a regular 2d feed
It is amazing to me that people in the community are just now talking about this. I have been flying with the skyzone v2 and a 3d setup for a few years now. I have also put the 3d set up on a few r/c race cars and gone to a few tracks. Lots of fun!
How much latency do the goggles add? Nothing noticeable at all unless you have a crappy vtx. Spend the money on a good vtx and you will never 👀 latency. If I had to put a number on it I would say 3 to 6 ms. If you have a crappy vtx (which I have flown many of) it can be as high as 12 ms.
I am shocked how LITTLE next to nothing is mentioned about 3d VR racing in air or on the ground! There are no videos about it. Nobody is talking about it. Nobody is commercializing it. When it sounds like the most natural idea you can have when you put your goggles on. Hey, I wonder what it would look like in 3d!?!
@@id104335409 I have both flown and driven in 3D! When I first bought my skyzone goggles they came with a 3D camera. It was incredible! I loved it. The only problem was the size of the camera. It made it tricky to mount. I am sure it can be made smaller now. I would definitely buy more than a few of them to put on my quads hooked up to DJI fpv for hi definition. 🤩
@@jsxgmanfam Do you know if the Skyzone 03O's are capable? I bought the Blackbird 3d cam after reading somewhere that the 03O's support 3d but upon trying I seemed only to get the usual feed. . What part actually separates the signal in the goggles do you know? Thanks
I have been watching videos for years waiting to dip my toes into this hobby and yesterday it hit me like a ton of bricks that fpv wasn't *already* 3d...
d3c0de I've taken 360 video from my quad and watched it in VR. Not even 3D but mega immersive. I've been dying to try a rig with head tracking since then. The are a few out there currently.
I tried head look with nerdcam3d stereovision camera, and fatshark trinity head tracker. You lose the concept of what angle the craft is at when the camera moves. FPV needs a fixed camera. You judge everything from that fixed angle.
I cant get a definite answer so far either. I want to use the blackbird v2 cam with skyzone03O goggles. I've seen it stated on a 'rcgroups 3d' thread that the SZ 03o *is* capable of 3D yet when I messaged sz Daniel he didnt seem sure. I thought, in my limited knowledge, that the left cam would transmit to the left channel and show on the left screen, and the right would transmit to the right channel, and show on the right screen? Maybe the fact that the signal is sent as a single transmission plays a part. Maybe the goggles cant split the transmission again to send to the separate screens?
I have one of the skizone sky03, but for the love of god I can't figure out how to change channel in 3D mode for individual side of the monitor....both monitor always change channel together.....
I have this system and have the cameras and vtx on my Blackout 290MM hex. I thought it was very cool but didn't keep flying that way. I was pretty new to FPV so I could barely fly so that may have impacted my feelings on the experience. You have made me want to revisit the 3D system on my hex as I am a much better pilot and builder these days. Now, it is a matter of building up my Blackout again as I have cannibalized it for parts for my quads ;)
What microphone do you use on your quads for FPV audio? I had one from BG but it was too sensitive and clipped the audio. Also, how is mounted to avoid wind noise? Im running the TBS unify pro 5g8 5v VTC. Thanks for your videos and reviews!
I notice you use the Turnigy Evolution more and more. I've got mine on the way based on your review. I would love to hear more about what settings tweaks you've made to it and what receivers you find work best with it.
So, could you mount that camera and the vtx on one of your more badass drones? (I.e. Are the connections and everything universal - would it be compatible?)
I really appreciate the video. What's the resolution? What's the max resolution to goggles possible. I want to use 2 go pros and an hd or higher vr or phone with viewer. However, I don't know the max resolution of the transmitter and how to tie everything in. Willing to spend money and have a crappy flight with the weight and power requirements to be able to see clouds, etc. in stereoscopic high definition.
What is the heat like on your VTx? The one that came with mine gets super hot! I've only tested it out on the bench for about 2-3 minutes but after that short time I couldn't pick it up it was so hot. I'm sure flying would keep it cooler but just wondered if mine was faulty or if that is just just how they are? Cheers
I'm willing to get a 3D goggles as well , but there's not to much going on about 3D fpv and the price for such gear is quite expensive , so not sure which one to get and even if it is worth the money... Question: can you get good 3D view from objects in distance like from a fpv wing or will the 3D effect be only when close to objects?
The 3d effect only works for about 20 feet out. Ive tried both skyzone, and fatshark 3d. I still use the fatshark 3d+ nerdcam3d. But I think you have to really like stereovision to make it worth it.
Those skyzone goggles can tune each eye LCD into a different channel in 3D mode, so you can use 2 cam/vtx combos of your choice and lenses to get better depth perception on a larger craft e.g. cameras on wing tips. The 3D vtx has 4 channel pairs that match with the goggles 4 pairs for easy setup. The DVR only records one of the internal RX units, so playback is 2D. Goggles have 3 axis head tracking inbuilt as well. Moral of the story is don't pay $300 extra for a shark logo and no features.
Take a pic of the wall behind you and make and anotation to each of your reviews for the crafts, there's a couple up there I haven't watched yet! Great video.
It looks as if the distance between the two cameras is quite a bit less than the distance between your eyes, which is usually about 64mm-ish. I don't know if the kit allows it, but if you try setting the cameras at that distance, then I think you should get a greater sense of depth. It ought to make up for that loss of 3d effect that you mentioned, when the drone is far away from everything. But I don't know to what extent.
Thank you Stu for getting us into this amazing hobby! 👍🏼Althoug Winter in Norway at the moment we fly as much as we can and my son is already kicking my ass :) keep up the good work with your channel.
Jayhawkdrummer That's not really how it works, it wouldn't be easy for him. L and R are shot and transmitted separately, it's more difficult to capture both streams into one file than to just analog each to its own output which is how the goggles work. Somewhere in there he says the DVR only gets one eye anyway.
