Rest in Peace, James McCaffrey. You will always be a great voice for this legendary character. "They were all dead. The final gunshot was an exclamation mark to everything that had led to this point. I released my finger from the trigger. And then it was over..."
The past is a puzzle. Like a broken mirror. You cut yourself and your image keeps shifting. It could destroy you, drive you insane. It *could* set you free.
“So I guess I had become what they wanted me to be: a killer, some rent-a-clown with a gun who puts holes in other bad guys. Well, that's what they had paid for, so in the end, that's what they got. Say what you want about Americans, but we understand capitalism: you buy yourself a product and you get what you pay for. And these chumps had paid for some angry gringo without the sensibilities to know right from wrong.”
"You can't run from your past. You'll end up running in circles. Until you fall back down to the same hole you were trying to escape from, only the hole's grown deeper"
Its edges yawning at your heels. Your only chance is to turn around and face it. But it's like looking down into the grave of your love. Or kissing the mouth of a gun. A bullet trembling inside its dark nest, ready to blow your head off.
The past is a hole. And no matter how hard and how long you try to climb out of the hole, it only takes one moment to fall right back to the bottom. And the closer you get to the surface, the harder you fall. (not the actual quote but close enough)
“There was a blind spot in my head, a bullet-shaped hole where the answers should be. Call it denial. I wanted to dig inside my skull and scrape out the pain.”
You know, MP2 is the only game I've played that has really explored depression and grief "properly". Family Friendly John Cena no that would be funny tho this would be Max 'i was standing there we was dead lol' that would be Max Payne if they used lol in the game
I am still waiting for a videogame (or basically any kind of material) that takes me where this game took me 10 or more years ago. The sheer brilliance of screenplay, storytelling, art, voiceover and soundtrack made me feel every bit of Max's sorrow, pain and depression. Although at first glance this game could look like a brainless shooting gallery, but at it's very core, it is a well-made drama, with human emotions, love, and the ultimate search for a motivation to live next day. Absolutely top class piece of art!
ISIS gaming الله أكبر Well I think MP3 was 'decent'. It had some moments, and it was better than I was expected it to be, as I was absolutely furious about the change of facial actor, and the sunny, tropical setting instead of a snowy NY. So they did what they could, but it would have been much better in NY.
Gábor Szabó Its not even the setting. Its the plot that got ruined. If you look at the max payne 3 comic issue #1 (its free), when max payne recounts his memories, he says that he "cheated" while it shows a flashback of him and mona kissing. I don't why he is saying this when he already showed affection for mona plenty of times. Especially when he kisses her goodbye as she lays dead. I felt like they just made a huge plot hole with that, ruining the storyline. There are more reasons the game isn't good, but this one is the main one, considering the fact that Mona Sax is a major character in max payne 2. To be honest, the story should have ended with max payne 2 or they should of gone with a spinoff featuring mona sax.
Now I'm a 26 years old Now I'm realising that was not just a game. I listened to this exactly at the first minute of my 27th birthday 12/12 Two days ago and IDK why ! lol
Just told my girl I wanna be in a city at night... nobody around and walking down a block with the wind blowing... just thinking. She didn’t understand me...
why don't they make games like this anymore? dark, artistic, awesome story, i swear when i was playing i felt like i was max payne. i felt i was the one that lost my wife and daughter, and i felt like i was the one falling for Mona Sax, i felt depressed and felt like i needed that unlimited ammo and a licence to kill. this game touched me in so many ways that i felt like i was the only person that could really understand max payne's suffering and connect with the game. while playing i felt like there was no more sun light. just the dark night with rainfall. felt like i needed to be on antidepressant.
Because it's unfortunately more profitable to make an online game with loot boxes than a tightly crafted story arc written by talented writers. It's risk...and the video game industry no longer rewards risk. What sells? Madden. Assassin's Creed. Battlefield. CoD. Why make an intricate single player game when you can recycle the same content year over year and make a quick cash? Video games are dead for people like us. We aren't the target market that makes studios lucrative cash. Put a bullet in the brainpan. Squish. There goes soul enriching entertainment.
@@nawr894 There's a few but it's admittingly far and between for more modern games. Witcher series, The Outer World's, Breath of the Wild, Ghost Of Tsushima, God of War, and Control are the only games this gen I can think of that did to even an extent. Last gen: Mass Effect series, Dragon Age Origins, Fallout New Vegas, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead (just Season 1), Bioshock 1 and Infinite, Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, Spec Ops Older titles: Shadow of the Collosus, KOTOR 1 and 2 (oh man especially 2), Fallout 1 and 2, Baldurs Gate
The movie could've been better if it wasn't called Max Payne. I mean, it was a good movie, but it had little to no connection to the video game series.
Beartallica86 Of course it had a connection Max's wife and child got killed by the inside cops working for those Valkyr manufacturing corporation except Lupino was a marine and a psychopath but in the game Lupino was a mob Capo? i dont remember the game that well i played it like 10 years ago:D
Very rarely it hits me like that when known people die... This one hit me right in the stomach. With James McCaffrey, Max Payne died as well. Exactly 20 years ago, Christmas 2003, I played Max Payne 2. Every Christmas time since then it's a tradition for me to replay Max Payne 1 and 2. This time it's gonna be extra emotional : | If only I knew a month ago when I played Alan Wake 2... Was so excited to see him voice a detective with the face of Max Payne, getting excited thinking he will reprise his role for the remakes. RIP James McCaffrey.
True , i hope he got time to make some lines for the remakes. Or at least with AI technology advancing so fast, we could easily recreate his voice for the new payne games if there will be any. But it won't be the same as the real James. RIP
My dad always used to play this game, and me a 7/8 year old boy always sitting next to him playing it. Only years later I found out he was in a heavy depression and tried to kill himself. I’m still thankful to this day that he didint because he’s alot better now and this soundtrack will never stop giving me goosebumps. I love you dad

Sir, you're right. I'm a pianist myself, but cello is nr 2 definitely. If you haven't already, please check many piano-cello duos in classical music, for example Schubert. Golden :)
Yovel efi I mean, I think 1 was better story wise, but this version of the theme song is a little better. 2 Was still an AWESOME game, including some parts that were better than the first one (like Mona Sax Being a lot better looking, lol), but as far as story, I think the first one is hard to beat.
Anyone else realize how the quotes in this game go over your head as a kid, but when you grow up it really hits you. We feel you, Max.. We feel you. “Love hurts..”
I stood alone in the darkness, the faint glow of the computer screen casting an eerie blue light across my face. The only sound in the room was the haunting melody of Max Payne's theme song as it echoed through my headphones. As the music filled my ears, I felt a rush of nostalgia wash over me. Memories of playing the game flooded back, the adrenaline pumping through my veins as I dodged bullets and fought my way through the seedy underbelly of the city. But it wasn't just nostalgia that I felt. There was something else, a chill that crept up my spine and settled deep in my bones. It was the same feeling that Max must have experienced as he walked through the dark, rain-slicked streets of New York, gun in hand, ready for anything. The music was a siren song, calling me back to a time when anything was possible, when danger lurked around every corner, and when the only way to survive was to stay one step ahead of the game. It was a time when Max Payne was king, and I was just a player in his world. But even as the music filled me with memories and adrenaline, it also reminded me of something else. Something darker, something more dangerous. It reminded me that Max Payne was not just a game, but a reflection of the world we live in. A world where violence and corruption rule the streets, where justice is often just a dream, and where the only way to survive is to fight back with everything you've got. It was a world where Max Payne was not just a hero, but a symbol of hope for all those who have been beaten down by life. And as the music came to an end, I sat back in my chair, feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders. But even as I did, I knew that I would never forget the thrill of the game, the rush of the fight, and the haunting melody of Max Payne's theme song.
This is a nostalgic theme. I remember being young, coming home from school, and playing this all night. Some of the best times of my childhood. Thank you Max Payne. What a damn game
They were all dead. The final gunshot was an exclamation mark to everything that had led to this point. I released my finger from the trigger. And then it was all over. The storm seemed to lose its frenzy. The ragged clouds gave way to the stars above.
The cold, hugging me, squeezing me intensivly, as i sit in front of my computer, with a cup of heartwarming tea, pressing a button on my mouse. *Click* was the sound i heard and i did it for only one purpose. To like this video.
This game changed the world for me .... I was a 17 year old highschool boy going through a brutal rejection ...constant fighting between my parents , could not study , no friends , no one to listen to me etc...... I played this game one winter night and I was hooked ! Idk for some it was all just so relatable to me .....the music , the loneliness , the sad state of the apartments ....the graphic novels and quotes by Payne all made sense .
That's unfortunate, hope you are better now. This game does remind us all of the oceans of crap we have to swim through to get on with life. And yeah, loneliness sucks, but you get used to it after a while. It doesn't mean the pain goes away, but it does certainly get much better.
Know that feeling very good. Lonely, no friends, no one really cares about me, nobody to talk to. One of the reasons why I love this game. Feeling, that something similar is happening to me, inner fight with loneliness, rejection, holding tears most of the day and try to handle it somehow.
This music has a certain kind of melancholy which grabs you by the neck and slowly drags you into the pit of depression....!! This music gets me everytime....
@@vanstarate That's a non-canonical ending. The canon ending is the one where she died. Atleast as far as I know since Max said he's "lost family more than once" in MP3
’The things that I want’, by Max Payne. A smoke. A whiskey. For the sun to shine. I want to sleep to forget. To change the past. My wife and baby girl back. Unlimited ammo and a license to kill. Right then, more than anything, I wanted her.
No matter how many improvements MP3 brought to the gunplay and other gameplay mechanics, MP2 will always be my favorite of the trilogy, with MP1 as a close second. 3 is a great game, don't get me wrong, but 2 has the best plot, characters, soundtrack and level design (plus, playable Mona!) of the series, at least in my opinion.
MP3 is a good game, but it utterly failed to deliver the narrative depth of MP1 and 2. Max's narration in MP1 and MP2 were like a continuous stream of poetry. Max's narration in MP3 is just constantly saying mundane stuff in a brooding voice. The most memorable line from MP3 is about shitflies.
I remember playing the first game when I was 12 and it totally changed my mindset on what entertainment means. I wasn't big into video games. Played a few here and there. It just felt so mindless to bash the controller for some meaningless character to live or die. But Max....I felt his pain. I wanted justice for his family. To uncover the secrets that led to the murder of them and later Mona. I wanted to see Max find a new life with Mona. I was Payne. Felt his inner words striking a chord like a broken record on a loop. I was sucked into video games for the stories and journeys that no other medium could take me other than novels. Games like Max Payne, KOTOR 1 and 2, Mass Effect, Fallout series...they all shared an intricate and distinctive world with a captivating mystery and story that I wanted to solve. Wish there were games like these nowadays. Remedy is the last of a dying breed of developers who dedicate the resources to make games that feel alive and connect with the player.
Same! I really feel the passion in their games that I have played and after going through the Max Payne duology and then Alan Wake, I realized that even if I just heard of Remedy pretty recently, their games are something worth appreciating! I'm really loving the linear connection of gameplay and story that i'm seeing from them :)))
"Прошлое - как провал. Сколько ни беги от него, бездна за спиной будет только глубже, все страшней, все ближе. Выход один - заглянуть туда. Словно заглянуть в собственную могилу. Словно поцеловать дуло пистолета, где пуля дрожит от желания снести тебе голову." - Max Payne
EDIT: RIP James McCaffrey. You were the voice of my childhood and still are to this day. I am heart broken that you're gone, and I'll never get to meet you like I always wished I could. My condolences to his family and friends. Rest easy, Max. I played this game when I was in elementary school, going into middle school, got it for Christmas. Maybe too young to experience a dense and violent story like this but it changed my life as a gamer, I never experienced a game like this. I played Max Payne 1 before this, but this was different to me. My favorite game of all time is this game and it's not even close. Becoming an adult and being able to take in the messages and the storytelling heightened the experience for me through the years and I make it a ritual to play through this game at least several times throughout the year, every year, and I'll be doing the same for the remakes when they come out. :)
Max Payne 1 & 2 were absolute masterclasses in immersive storytelling and gameplay. I miss these games so much. Glad to hear Remedy is remaking them!!!
Life was good. The sun setting on a sweet summer's day. The smell of freshly mowed lawns, the sounds of children playing. A house across the river on the Jersey side. A beautiful wife and a baby girl. The American Dream come true.
"Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present Max Payne. New York's Finest, with the biggest mobster bodycount ever. Dearest guests, prepare to die... Max, I'd love to come and welcome you, but I'm busy dodging bullets and hiding under a desk at the moment."
Max Payne 2 was the first game I got to play on PC, I wanted to play GTA: SA but the seller tested and said it didn't work so he gave me this instead and I played this game non-stop during the 2013 summer holidays and whenever I was going to sleep I remember solving the puzzles that it had, "how am I supposed to jump out of that window and then through the ledge go inside another!!?"
Well the whole Max Payne series should've ended with Max'es death... I think all the parts of the series have led to this point, but in MP3 - boom. Max is retired. Yeah, the most positive ending in whole series basically.
MAX PAYNE IS A FEELING.....WE LIVE HIS LIFE WHEN GAMEPLAY START....FIRST TIME I GOT TEARS IN MY EYES AFTER PLAYING A GAME...IT IS NOT JUST A GAME...It is more than that.
Max Payne 2 is still and always will be my favourite in the series.. they took what made the first game so awesome and made it darker and with a drama and thriller twist to it.. very awesome and unsettling game
"I am Max Payne. My Wife and Daughter were murdered. It had something to do with the designer drug 'V'. I transferred from the NYPD to the DEA, went undercover to find their killers. I got too close. I was framed for murder. With nothing to lose, I went after the Mafia during the worst winter storm in a century." "My first stop Vinnie Gogniti, a low-life in the habit of taking his frustrations out on under-age call girls. I left him bleeding in an alley after I'd gotten what I wanted out of him. I met Mona Sax in a gothic nightclub, Ragnarock. She was a hired killer. We were after the same man, her sister's sadistic husband. I was drawn to her for all the wrong reasons. I made a deal with Vladamir Lem. The Russian was a smooth operator. He helped me get to the mob boss I was after, but I was in over my head. The Government was involved." "A mystery man called Alfred Woden told me the name of my real enemy: Nicole Horne. Woden and Horne were both members of a secret society, The Inner Circle. She was behind 'V', behind everything. While working for the D.A. my wife had accidentally seen papers that incriminated Horne. Woden promised to take care of the charges against me if I took Horne out. Deputy Chief Jim Bravura of the NYPD was trailing me by the empty shell casings that I left behind. Gunshots made me deaf to the sirens, but they couldn't drown the sobs of my dead wife. Mona sided with me against Horne. She took a bullet for that, her body disappeared behind closing elevator doors. I killed Horne." "I gave myself up to the police. I had enough evidence against Woden to know he'd keep his promise. I lied to myself that it was over. I was still alive, my loved ones were still dead. It wasn't over."
Rest in Peace, James McCaffrey.

Gábor Szabó Hm... Szép, sose láttam gyakran magyar Max Payne fanokat :)
Gábor Szabó I have exactly the same opinion !!. ...
Gábor Szabó Yep, it was. Until max payne 3 took the series backwards (and i mean that in a bad way). Rockstar really fucked up the storyline.

True , i hope he got time to make some lines for the remakes.
Or at least with AI technology advancing so fast, we could easily recreate his voice for the new payne games if there will be any.
But it won't be the same as the real James. RIP

Your role as Max was legendary
Still one of the darkest and saddest pieces of video game music I have ever heard. One of my favorites.
The trouble with wanting something is the fear of losing it, or never getting it. The thought makes you weak.
This song is giving me goosebumps all over my body. What a soundtrack and What a game.
Same bro
WOW!
Dude, you real max. (P.S.)its nice)

How's life now?
@@fzee990 kind of alright now . Thanks for asking.

"I was already so far past the point of no return I couldn't even remember what it looked like when I had passed it."
I played. The first and second games in one sitting each earlier this year. I can't play 3 anymore, it just doesn't feel right.
Only disagree with the soundtrack, think Health's OST for MP3 was absolutely amazing, MP2 will forever be my favourite all-round game though
2 has always been my favourite as well. I got bored of 3 and never finished.
I used to fire up the game just to listen to this music occasionally.
I wish the 2nd one was on ps3/4/5 so I could play it cause I love MP3 I’ve re played it like 50 times on ps3
That sound touching my soul when its playing.
Damn. So dark, terrifying, calming and beautiful. This tune is seriously underrated.
I read this is Max' voice.
Easily one of -if not- the most depressing game soundtrack ever. Suggests depression, confusion and bitter anger. Fits the game amazingly.
I think one of the members of Apocalyptica helped compose it.
They are well known for such music. Give 'em a try if you haven't already.
"Прошлое - как провал. Сколько ни беги от него, бездна за спиной будет только глубже, все страшней, все ближе. Выход один - заглянуть туда. Словно заглянуть в собственную могилу. Словно поцеловать дуло пистолета, где пуля дрожит от желания снести тебе голову." - Max Payne

I played this game when I was in elementary school, going into middle school, got it for Christmas. Maybe too young to experience a dense and violent story like this but it changed my life as a gamer, I never experienced a game like this. I played Max Payne 1 before this, but this was different to me. My favorite game of all time is this game and it's not even close. to take care of the charges against me if I took Horne out. Deputy Chief Jim
Bravura of the NYPD was trailing me by the empty shell casings that I left
behind. Gunshots made me deaf to the sirens, but they couldn't drown the sobs
of my dead wife. Mona sided with me against Horne. She took a bullet for that,
her body disappeared behind closing elevator doors. I killed Horne."
