You are picking a great truck . The only problem with them is the vintage. Where I live any vehicle that is 20 years or older is prone to rusting out. Pick a truck with a decent body. The mechanicals are easier to replace than body panels.
He keeps saying how wonderfull the truck is its smoking like a chimney with fire in it the motor is tapping.9 out of 10 1st startups on them chevy,s taps and smokes.Yes like a rock.
The smoke you see is from the quart of oil I poured down the carb 9 years earlier. The tapping was a bad rocker arm. She's a good runner now that I've tuned it up.
I Haven't had to do much to the drive train. Just an alternator so far, and a carb kit. I replaced the heads with 194 intakes and did some porting work to help it breath better. It had about 20,000 K on the rebuild. So it was in pretty good shape. Hoping to get 18 miles per gal. I just put it on the road a week ago and haven't figured out the mileage yet. Thanks for watching
This truck will never get 18 mpg never in a million years. I have owned 20 of these thing and had all different engines. The one I have now is 1986 military k30 pulled the junk 6.2 put a 454 in it

Its got a gear venders overdrive in it. Ive also had lots of these trucks, and a 350 gets 15. This is a 307. I am able to get 18 on a flay stretch of hwy. Whats so hard to believe ?

You got to deal with what's available here. It's all done now and I love how it turned out. Yes totally ! ! Living here next to the ocean is not good for a vehicle. They need to be in motion always. It ended up being completely torn down. It sat too long . Lots of new parts. Lots of performance goodies too. You can flick forward and see the finished product. Thanks for the comment
If the drivetrain is in decent shape you can buy all of the replacement panels for your truck . If you have a mig welder ( and maybe some deep pockets ) you can bring it back to life . We're starting to see fewer of these trucks on the road now . Certainly hard to find one in great shape that's all original They're all Wheezed out now ! Ha
@@squarebodychevyoverhauls6982 yeah you're right. It's got the tbi 5.7 with the 700r4 208 case. I'd like to just get it running and fix it little at a time. She was a frankintruck when I got it. Has 81 front clip and lots of rust, bed is really wavy haha. She led a hard life before I got her.
If you followed the video, you will see I poured a quart of oil down the throat when I parked it 9 years ago cause I knew it would be sitting there for years before I got a chance to restoring it. All the smoke is the oil burning off.
@@squarebodychevyoverhauls6982 Thats cool, may not be so bad then. Ive personally had bad luck with 307's, but, mine were olds 307's both times. Olds distributor turned opposite chevy. Had one jump timing twice in one day once. I got it home by walking the plug wires to the left one post all the way around and then turning the distributor. had low power but did indeed drive home. Changed out the nylon timing gear and ran that engine another year after. But in my case, they always oveheated.
@@squarebodychevyoverhauls6982 I just inherited a 1981 with a 350 small block, holley 650, headers mild cam.. but its spark knocking badly. Next task is to run all new vacuum lines, check the advance weights, and set base timing... and grab a new advance canister since i think the factory vac advance is still on it lol
A chevy 307 is just a stroked 283. It was designed to meet the oil crisis at the time. They detuned it by lowering the compression. This was all to do with the heads they designed . 172 intake, 150 exhaust. I think it was 8.5 to 1. They sported a 2 barrel carb only. If you changed these things they were nice engines , but better off in a lighter vehicle
I replaced the Gm HEI unit with a new MSD distributor. The advance weights were worn out and it wasn't advancing correctly anymore. Made an improvement forsure
Once I am around that tight corner on the shop, that is where the driveway is. The first half is actually my lawn. I only parked it up there so the truck was out of the way. Even though it's on the slope and a little on the tight side,..it's fine. Iv'e had dump trucks and cement trucks up it.
I was worried I was going to have to tow it down from the top where it was parked when the clutch went to the floor and didn't come back up again for 10 seconds. It would have been a horror story towing it down with my other truck I lucked out for sure. Thanks for watching

It's all in the gearing. I tested it on the hwy. 18.35

It's a standard. The master clutch and slave cylinders were barely working. All gummed up !

Did you seriously pour a quart of oil down the carburetor??? WHY the heck would you do that besides try to clog it on purpose?
I knew the truck was going to sit for years so dumping oil down the throat leaves an oil film on the valve seats and the cylinders
Either he got bad valve guides or the truck just lit a cigar to celebrate it's release from jail....

I built the truck for me. It's to haul around my camper on holidays. I'll never sell it cause I got it just how I want now.
307 worst gm head ever built hands down. old ladies complained about it not breathing.
Its got 601 heads and other goodies and other goodies to give it more power and make it more efficient. Its a good runner.
