    Thanks Leah for all the great videos! I learned (and am still learning!) how to FMQ from all of your wonderful videos and your quilt alongs! I never once thought about ruler quilting until I saw your videos, so now I'm venturing out and trying to incorporate some of this quilting style in my quilts! It's a slow process, but I'm really enjoying it---Thanks for opening up a new world of quilting for me.

    Thank you Leah! Can you please tell me what kind of a ruler foot I need for my Singer Curvy or my Dressmaker machine. I recently moved and lost my booklets in the move. I am making a Dresden Plate quilt for my first Grandbaby, and I just recently learnt about rulerquilting. Can you give me advice, please?

    There is a ruler foot made by "Westalee" that comes with a ruler and they have several other rulers available. It works good for FMQ but did not work on my quilt (Grace) frame. It was reasonably priced for what it was. I ended up having to get a Janome convertible FMQ foot with the ruler foot attachment, a little more expensive, but a good option if you need your ruler foot to be a hopping variety.

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep! I use the same settings with ruler foot quilting as free motion quilting - they are really the same thing, just with the ruler foot base you have the freedom to press rulers against the side and use that to steer the design.

  • @pamelahill6990
    @pamelahill6990 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    When using the quilting rulers do you need to drop the feed dogs or is that only for free motion work

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only if you want to. Whatever settings work for Free motion quilting should work for ruler quilting, but you don't have to drop your feed dogs either way. Here's a post to explain that: leahday.com/pages/drop-feed-dogs-free-motion-quilting

    What do think about using a clear ruler foot? What size is your supreme slider do you use?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't liked the clear foot because it's plastic and moves as I press against it. This is one technique where the foot really shouldn't move! I always use a Queen Supreme Slider, unless the machine is super tiny in which case I'll use a regular size.

  • @treezza2817

    Leah, is it better to use a hopping ruler foot or the stationary type such as the Westalee that attaches to the needle bar? I'll be receiving a Juki TL machine soon, and the standard foot for that machine seems to be the hopping 1/4" ruler foot, but I'm wondering if I can use the type that attaches to the needle bar? (They're cheaper!) What are the differences between each?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Westalee foot only attaches to the foot bar, not the needle bar and I believe that's the foot shown in this video. Yes, I prefer a stationary foot rather than a hopping foot if possible. Just make sure it's a Ruler Foot, not FMQ or Darning foot for working with rulers. The thick base of a ruler foot is necessary to stop the foot from hopping on top of the ruler or having it slip below.
      You will need a High Shank Special foot to fit that Juki TL. And you should use thicker longarm rulers so they don't slip below that foot.

    • @treezza2817
      @treezza2817 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeahDay Thanks, Leah, that's helpful. (You're right about the bar, of course, I meant to say the presser foot bar!) I wonder what the purpose is of that hopping 1/4" ruler foot?

    Leah thanks for this and all your videos. I've learned so much about quilting. My question to you is your foot specially made? Because I have a Husqvarnaviking Quilting 870, and the feet I've seen are open spring feet with a 1/3 of the shank height you have. Is this what I'm to use? Thanks

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'll need to talk to your Viking dealer to see if they have a ruler foot available yet. If not, you'll need to search online to figure out what type of foot (low shank, high shank, medium shank) your machine is compatible with. We will be carrying ruler feet as soon as I have a solid list of machines and foot compatibility.

    • @LeahDay

      Yes, I still use pins and pinmoors when quilting with rulers. You just need to watch out for the pins and remove them whenever they get in your way.

  • @matjam98
    @matjam98 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. I have a question about the ruler foot. I attach the foot tightly to my low shank machine. After I sew against a ruler for a minute or two, the ruler foot becomes loose and just falls off. Do you have a suggestion for keeping it securely attached? Thanks.

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm... something must be vibrating or rubbing to cause the screw to rotate. Remove all thread from the machine and make sure the foot is down and just run the machine a bit and watch the screw. If it unscrews by itself you just need a replacement screw for attaching your feet so it holds more securely.

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Remember that a quilt is just fabric and thread. Yes, you will make ugly stitches. It's okay to make ugly stitches. Your next quilt will be better and the next will be better after that, but you can't improve, you can't get anywhere when you don't quilt at all. You'll never learn how to ride a bike unless you get on the bike! LOL! Go quilt Connie - you CAN do this!

    Help! I can't get the bobbin thread to come up. I made sure the ruler foot is down as you suggested but I can't get the bobbin thread up. I tried rethreading the bobbin, changed the tension, etc. Can you please let me know what I might be missing? Thanks :-)

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      First check the foot is in the down position. Second check your needle. Most issues with the bobbin thread not coming up have to do with the needle being bent or dull. Also make sure your bobbin area is threaded properly.

    When do you use this and when to use a walking foot, for straight lines?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whenever you feel like one or the other. A walking foot does tend to be slower because you HAVE to shift the quilt and rotate it so the line you're quilting is always facing you. If you have plans to wiggle off and do filler quilting like Stippling, then ruler foot quilting would be better because you can quilt with the rulers, or set them aside and do normal free motion quilting. There isn't a single right or wrong choice - just whatever you feel like at any given time!

      I no longer have the Juki 2010, but I believe it's compatible with the Special High Shank foot. Whats the difference between this foot and a darning/embroidery foot?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A darning foot / embroidery foot usually isn't built with high lip or with an exactly 1/2 inch circular base. The high edge is the most important because it stops the ruler from slipping under the foot (and crashing against your needle) or over the foot (with the same result). Unless you want broken needles or a broken machine, I'd only try this idea with an actual ruler foot.

    Thank you for this helpful video. I have my Janome 9400 set for ruler work and I am using the ruler foot that came with the machine. I also have the supreme slider set up on my machine. But, I am having difficulty with extremely long stitch length when I go from side to side. All is well when I move north and south. When I change direction I have difficulty. With my stitches being very wonky. Any suggestions?

    • @cjane51

      One more thing. I have change the needle to three or four different needles and I have tried four different including Isacord

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely you need to increase your machine speed (just press your foot on the pedal harder). Your hands really like that movement which is making you move your hands faster, which cases your stitches to get longer. Keep in mind that Ruler Quilting is another form of Free Motion Quilting which means you must maintain a balance of machine speed and hand movement to create each stitch.

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, changing needles and threads won't help. It's not your materials, it's the balance of speed / movement. Slow down your hands in those directions OR put your foot down and speed up your machine.

    Is the ruler foot the same as the free motion foot??? Can I use the free motion foot to do the same??? I have a baby lock tempo and I was just wondering if these were the same. I was just a little confused. I haven't tried any free motion and I'm still in the watching Utube videos before I start. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Love your videos. Thanks. 😀

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! A ruler foot is a type of darning foot so you can use this foot to do free motion quilting as well as ruler foot quilting.
      But it doesn't work the other way - if you have a regular darning foot that will NOT work for ruler foot quilting. You must have a high base and full circle to use the rulers so the foot doesn't hop up over the edge of the ruler and crash the needle against the plastic. Does that make sense?

    • @traceyrandell2272
      @traceyrandell2272 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leah Day
      Yes it most certainly do make sense. I will have to look into whether I can get that type of attachment for my machine. Thanks very much.

    I can't manage to get that top thread pulled up and under the ruler foot. I wind up pulling yards of bobbin thread...help

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like your bobbin is not wound properly into your machine. I would check that it’s oriented correctly, threaded correctly, then drop your needle down and bring it back up (all the way up to the point it’s starting to drop back down again) and tug on your top thread. Bobbin thread should pull up as a loop you can tuck under your foot and start quilting.

  • @babygirlincoful
    @babygirlincoful 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You said you use a 0 for stitch length but what about stitch widths and tension?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stitch width needs to be left alone (unless you want to zigzag!) and tension should be the same as whatever worked for piecing. Sometimes you might need to adjust your tension a bit, but if your threads are balancing for piecing, they should remain balanced for FMQ and ruler foot quilting.

  • @SheriBorntodance
    @SheriBorntodance 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    can you explain how to achieve consistent stitches in ruler foot quilting...I'm practicing and I have a supreme slider...I am frustrated.

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question Sheri! Please keep in mind that ruler quilting is a type of free motion quilting. The machine isn't doing any work for you so you'll still need to find that balance between the speed of your hands moving and the speed of the machine running. It takes practice and patience, though the rulers will make it feel easier to make the designs at least. Just focus on your hand position and as you move the quilt through the machine, try to maintain a steady, slow movement and also keep the machine running steady and slow too. Don't panic at an occasional big stitch - that's normal!

    How do you know what rulers to use for your machine?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a hard question to answer since several sewing machine companies have decided to make it very challenging. I'd say for most home machines, you need the thinner 1/8-inch thickness. If your machine is much bigger or specifically designed for high speed quilting and if you know it's a high shank machine, then you should go with the thicker longarm 1/4-inch thickness.

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This particular foot is on an older Bernina sewing machine - a 1230. The hopping is within the foot bar itself as the needle moves up and down. Newer Bernina machines have a compatible ruler foot so make sure you work with a Bernina dealer to get that for your machine.
