This is a beautiful speech that Michael makes, about the power of love, and the ability to play music. This shows that not only was Michael Nesmith a very talented musician, but he was quite an impressive actor as well. His words carry a heartfelt sincerity that would be impossible to fake.
Even more impressive is that in hindsight we learned that Peter and Nez did not like each other or get along. This is true professionalism on display here!!!😔

And he plays "I wanna be free". Say what you want. This was a good show for the time. And look what America got in return. Four young guys who wound up to be a darn good band.
This may very well be the most powerful testimony about music and God given talent I've ever heard..Papa Nez articulated his argument with the Devil eloquently and Peter showed his passion and skilled fingers on that harp just as he did with all the many instruments he really could and did play...Mike also made the bold statement I'M A MUSICIAN!!! (SO shove it Don Kirshner) and Monkee critics!! The manufactured group that did really become a band!Another reason they SHOULD BE IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME!Millions of records sold, numerous charted major hits,outselling the Beatles for a period of time,a hit TV show still in sydication ,TV commercials,a motion picture (HEAD)that has achieved cult status,fabulous solo careers,succsesfull comebacks and tours with Micky Dolenz one of Pop/Rock musics best and most recognizable voices of the 60;s and 70's now the lone survivor still touring honoring his departed bandmates as we speak!! And still popular to multiple generations. Still relevant to this day over 57 years later.
And people say this was a pretty much useless cornball show. Who would ever think this subject would ever be on this type of show? Wonderful episode. (My favorite 🎵 by the way)
I always knew that Peter could play a bunch of instruments, but never realized that he faked playing the harp by watching Groucho Marx. Still, the look on his face is so precious. There is true love there.

...not only this was defining moment in Mike's acting skills, it was a BELIEVABLE moment in why they were FRIENDS....Mike & Peter were actual Musicians, and they both KNEW what drives them, AS Musicians.... (1:39) ...Legends, the 4 of them.....BABY... ; )
In retrospect this moment is so poignant. When Davy passed, Michael acknowledged that it was general opinion that he and Peter were the true musicians of the band. He stated that Peter was the real musician of the four. Fast forward to when Peter passed away and Nez revealed that he and Peter didn’t like each other and never really got along makes this scene pretty touching, in my opinion. 😞

The Devil and Peter Tork is my favorite Monkees episode. Fairy Tale is a close second.
