How On Earth Did Baylor Lose to BYU in College Football's Game of the Year? | Baylor Bears Podcast

  • The Baylor football team lost for the first time since that dreaded TCU game last season on Saturday when it traveled to Provo, Utah to meet BYU. The Cougars were not only better prepared for this game, but their defensive plan of attack rarely flinched. The A1 goal of the Cougars was to hinder Blake Shapen, and hinder the young quarterback they did.
Shapen finished the game 18-28 with 137 yards passing and a touchdown. That is not good. However, it isn't exactly what lost Baylor the game. Shapen's -22 yards on the ground took care of that. The one-dimensional nature of the quarterback on Saturday was staggering. BYU took advantage of knowing Shapen would never be on the run, and the Cougar defense had its way.
The Bears were solid defensively, and there is little to harshly critique on that side of the ball. It's the offense that gets the blame for this one. If your defense only allows 20 points in regulation, you have to score to honor that.

BYU is a stellar addition to the Big 12. I honestly feel that between BYU and Baylor there is a mutual respect between the programs and they give each other their best. We have lost a lot of cool rivalries but I think this one definitely can be a gem.

BYU fan here. Had the pleasure of walking into the game with 2 different sets of Baylor fans. Such wonderful representatives of Baylor. I saw a clean, well played game by 2 very equally matched teams. No turnovers by either team. Really a tribute to your QB and RBs, great ball security. We are excited to come to Baylor. Good luck to you guys.. Now go win the Big12.

BYU fan here, this popped up in my feed. Just wanted to drop by and say it was an honor to host you guys. We love Baylor (and many of your current - our old staff). We normally have an engaged crowd, but we brought it extra because we knew our team would need it against you guys. Your offensive line is incredible! We blitzed countless times throughout the night on big plays and it was so disheartening to see 7 guys just melt into your line and get picked up seamlessly... I think your qb will be really good. Obviously your run attack is unparalleled, so when your TEs and WRs figure out how to sink into zones and break man coverage you guys will be unbeatable. (Our man coverage has been a heavy priority for the coaching staff over the last few years and we have one of our deepest DB rooms ever, so don't lose hope). I am just glad we played you before you figured all that out.
Here's to you running the table, winning the Big 12, and pushing for a NY6 and playoff discussion, as we hope to do. See you in conference (gosh it feels good to say that last part!)

I'm very excited for BYU to join the Big XII next year, hope BYU can compete and I know they aspire to become like Baylor in regards to toughness and success.
Baylor is a team that I will emphatically rout for all but one week during the season.

BYU fan here. It was a pleasure to host the Baylor team and fans. Loved that the game felt physical without getting dirty (although our corners have got to stop going at the linemen's knees). Playing you last year showed us the bar and something to strive for during the off-season so we got a lot of respect. Seems like you are a good QB away from being an incredible team, but Shapen showed flashes of brilliance and if he can put it together I think (and hope) y'all run the table the rest of the year. Excited to be joining your conference.

Was at the game, what a roller coaster! Great game, was a slug fest, a defensive struggle but by the end the place had gone nuts and either team could have walked away with it. Glad my Cougars pulled it off but nothing but respect for Baylor, for the team and the fans I think interacted with. I’ll be cheering for Baylor the rest of the year.

Loved having you all at the stadium. I made a very proactive effort to welcome Baylor fans around me and wish a good game to all. Best game I ve ever been to. Some would say it was boring and may have even turned off the game before halftime. But for this BYU fan who almost always sees a give but don’t break defense, I was mystified by our defensive performance against a really good Baylor team. I look forward to this rivalry and pray we can all keep it classy over the years. Classy is not how you would describe our long standing rivalry with Utah. Win out bears! Awesome podcast!!

Baylor hit an extraordinary and healthy (except for our 2 receivers) BYU team. This is as good a BYU team as I've seen in many years (I'm a BYU alum). It's hard to play at BYU simply because it's at a high altitude. If you're from Texas (which is where I live) it's hard to do anything aerobic in Provo. But Baylor has a very strong team. If they get their passing game going, they will be a top 5 team.

I think Baylor thought they could come run it down our throats, and that just wasn't the case this year, like it was last year. Your QB should be really good, he showed some pretty good flashes.

4 false starts compared to 1 by BYU. Give that edge to BYU fan noise, which is intense. Nice assessment on this game. I'm a BYU fan and Grimes knows that if he pounds the ball on the ground 50 times he's going to win, so that worried me especially since BYU had so many 3 and outs. This was a great effort by BYU defense. Class act from Baylor and a great game to watch. Looking forward to hopefully a rivalry in the Big 12.

As a BYU fan I think you have to equal teams. 20-20 if you say Baylor’s offense didn’t do enough then wouldn’t you say BYU’s offense didn’t do enough? As for illegal blocks both teams did it but it was only called on BYU. Watch the td run by Hall he was lead by an O-lineman and the Baylor db chop blocked below the waist of the lineman. That was called on BYU twice. It is a new rule and getting called a lot this year.

I think a lot of Baylor fans were amazed and I think the rest of the big 12 will be as well. Most of the conference teams are from fairly flat places and I have to believe the Wasatch will be a real treat beyond the football. And OMG Baylor doesn’t suck, that was an old school dog fight.

HAPA HAWAIIAN BYU FAN! This was a Healthy BYU team, with no 3rd string linemen on both sides of the line of scrimmage like last year in WACO. That was the difference. Shapen from my perspective, did what a young QB does. The Baylor Bears are an awesome team! They happened to meet a team that is mature and had a chip on their shoulders.
14 penalties, that is lame! Especially the hold on #31 Max Tooley from the left tackle, DUDE he not only held the linebacker he tackled the linebacker. Yeah BYU had 9 penalties and Kalani will address that big time.
YES, the targeting was lame, it happens! the defensive chop-block calls on BYU were lame because they totally missed the BEAR defensive chop block when Jaren and 3 of his HUGE O' lineman scored in the south end zone. OK, the refs are not JESUS, they will get calls and miss calls. I want Baylor to go undefeated the rest of the year!
    GO BYU! and GO BEARS!

You must realize this about BYU I’ve been a fan since I was a little boy in the 90s I grew up idolizing the late 90s BYU college football teams. but then at the age of 18 I watched Miami hurricanes national championship game and it changed my life forever because you could see that the people were playing for the love of the game not just money and fame.
So I developed a love for collegiate football as a whole backs and BYU and Utah we’re still in the mountain west, so I was never big into them because until you’re beating quality teams weekend and week out in a power five conference I’m not gonna hold you that much..
Now if Utah fall in the pack 12 and the hunt for championship and BYU entering a well-deserved big 12 conference, historically BYU has always played as good as their opponents if they’re playing USC you’re gonna get a USCBYU team but if they’re playing Bo Diddley Tech they’re gonna be playing like Bo Diddley Tech.
I really help with Kehlani Satake that you can change that mentality and just go for the fucking jugular in this conference.
We got some big old polys on that team, and those boys are bred differently!
Provo will soon be a dreaded name in the big 12 conference.
Not to mention the 4000footplus elevation gain from your extremely flat land… (That is Utah’s geography teammate is by the fourth quarter teams are so out of breath that’s why the Utes are the run and use they just grind them down on the fourth quarter the opponents visiting are all out of breath I can’t keep up!
Also realize that BYU has won in this ever since Utah got the pack 12 invite and you’re gonna have an extremely hungry motivator football team his coach knows how to get young man motivated to win because BYU has always been looked at as that Mormon school.
I’m very excited for your conference to have BYU in it and I wish you and your fans we’re always feel welcomed if you travel to Provo it’s a lovely little city nozzle against the prettiest backdrop and all of college football Wasatch Mountains.

An early loss sets the tone for any team. I believe Baylor will take this loss, allow it to shape them as a team, and absolutely kill it the rest of the year. At year's end, I believe this game will be looked upon as the necessary kick Baylor needed to become dominant. Also, BYU fan here 👍

I thought the BYU vs Baylor game was a great battle of teams that are close in skill and strength. Mistakes took place on both sides of the line of scrimmage because of how great the offense and defense were on the other side of the ball for either team. As I have mentioned before, BYU fans compete to be the best fans in the nation.

Baylor is amazing. I’m a BYU fan and was convinced Baylor would run the ball up the field 3.5 yards per play with 6:00 left in the game, kick a field goal or smash it into the end zone, and that would be it. I kept saying, though, that win or lose this was simply a great game. Very evenly matched. I think it’s important to remember in games like this where both teams get ~300 yards of total offense that the other team is way good too! Great players on Baylor shut down Tyler Allgier last year - and he’s an NFL borderline starter. Baylor did that to BYU again this year, and BYU did some of that to Baylor in the pass game, etc. Amazing football experience watching evenly matched teams. As a BYU fan I’m extremely impressed with everything about what Baylor, Waco, Aranda, and Grimes stand for. Best of luck this season!

That was a great game. Unfortunately for BYU (and I guess Baylor also), it was mostly downhill for BYU from that game last season, and after the Baylor game the whole defensive side of the ball largely went MIA. Good teams don't go 0 for October, get crushed by Liberty, and lose at home to ECU. I'm just glad they dusted off the wallet and decided to cough up for a competent DC.

So, Baylor's failures on offense are Baylor's fault, but BYU's failures on offense are the fault of Baylor's great defense? Is that what you're saying? My take is different: Two evenly matched teams slugged it out. Both teams have good defenses and good offenses. In general, good defense beats good offense -- and that's what we saw. Both offenses struggled and those struggles were due to the good defense on the other side of the ball.

Hey man I feel like this is a pretty overall general well presented analysis however I feel like you are selling the BYU defense a little short like yeah you're talking about how they're throwing routes underneath the defense and you know the last couple seasons BYU is kind of been known to run that bend but don't break style defense but for like the last 30 years BYU has not really been a super physical playing team and I think that's something that's been changing over the last couple of seasons and as a BYU fan I'm glad to see that because that's one of the things that's always kind of hell is back is we're always the super nice guys on the field and while I don't think there's anything wrong with good sportsmanship I think there is a definitive line between physicality and unsportsmanlike play all credit to Baylor you know their offense played really well in my opinion considering our defense really I feel showed up for the first time in like 15 years I can say that I was satisfied in the way the defense actually matched the physicality of not only Baylor's offense but Baylor's defense as well and they knew they were going to have to do that to win this game and I think that's really was the deciding factor you know you can talk about the fans you can talk about the decibel level you can talk about shape and not being more than one dimensional but the end of the day BYU's defense was just flying around in ways that I haven't seen since the eighties and honestly I think this game is going to propel them to even greater heights you know next week we play against Oregon and they're not exactly a physical team and now just BYU defense and offense both has experience playing against a very very tough physical Baylor team and I think that's going to be ingrained in them and propel them to be able to match up better with teams like Notre Dame teams like Arkansas teams like Stanford who overall is a more physical team than most of the pac-12 has to offer and I think that you know a little bit maybe you guys are being a little too harsh on your offense because yeah you could make the argument that they were undisciplined but coming from someone who's played center not an FBS level but they did play around you know $30,000 people or more it's not always easy when that crowd gets loud to hear and I noticed you know you're using silent count clapping to draw the cadence and that can get drowned out really easily so even if your center hears it your tackle all the way you know 10 ft away from where your center is they're not always going to hear that so it's more of an instinctual movement you know there's a delay almost in a setting like that they can really hamper an offensive lines ability to be disciplined and I really don't think that their play was undisciplined at all the turnover margin shows that neither team turned it over and the one thing I always look at when I'm thinking about undisciplined teams is how many takeaways were there there was zero on either side both of these teams in my opinion were very disciplined one just wasn't quite prepared enough for the noise and I think that home field advantage really really helped BYU out and I think it will continue to do so in matchups like Arkansas like Stanford and that's just my two cents you know you can tell me I'm wrong if you think I am but I really feel like your guys is offense honestly was more productive than ours was you know we might have scored the same amount of points but we couldn't run the ball worth a crap and you guys were running all over us you guys have some seriously talented backs

This is hard to believe but several years ago some dumb rule was allowed by the refs. They were allowed to give penalties if the fans were too loud. This is true. I remember one possession where the refs kept giving BYU penalties for being too loud. The players on the field were waving their arms down to quiet the crowd because it was too loud. The opposing quarterback kept doing drama that he couldn't hear. What a dumb rule. I am glad they changed it. Yes, the BYU fans are loud. No beer in the stands and they are known to be friendly to the opposing fans. Great game and Baylor looked good. BYU just has a chip on their shoulder for being excluded from the bigger conferences all these years so they play with great passion. In the past BYU has been very good with 2-3 star recruits. We are now getting 4-5 star recruits and it is shocking for the fans to see this. I suspect BYU will be a very competitive team in the BIG12.

Let's keep this real... Baylor is going to run over every team them play. BYU secondary prevented touchdowns that normally happen. Stay off the QB for Baylor. No QB in college would have done better. Frankly, he did what he needed to do; hand the ball off. I don't think anyone is passing against BYU. Honestly, I don't know how anyone is going to beat BYU. They have all the pieces on offense and defense. They have no weakness other than if they play Baylor again they are going to give up yards in the trenches. Notice I said, yards and not touchdowns. This was an epic game!

Look, this was a battle of two beasts. The QB for Baylor just went up against a BYU secondary I've never seen before. BYU is legit! Don't feel too bad for this loss Baylor, cause BYU could upset Alabama or Georgia in a playoff game. No joke. BYU just won with a Freshman wide receiver who looked like a professional. Both BYU best offensive players didn't even play in the game.

2009 FSU destroyed #7 BYU in Provo in a late game. 54-29. FSU was horrible that year, some may remember it's the year their legendary coach Bobby Bowden was shown the door. It's not the "atmosphere" that killed them. I mean... Loud games are not something Baylor doesn't see at say, Texas, Oklahoma, Okie State, or historically Nebraska and Texas A&M. I mean, yeah, not these kids for those last two, but it's not like it was Louisiana Tech going to Neyland stadium or something.

Two very good football teams. BYU was open about the fact that they admire Baylor and used last years poor phyiscal performance to improve this year. I hope someday that BYU will have defensive and offensive lines as strong as Baylors.
The headline of this video is poor. BYU definitely is on par with Baylor this year and deserved to win this game.

I think your offense will be great once you figure out your timing in the passing game. You guys ran at will against a team that was committing 9 big and fast men to stopping it. If you could have made us (BYU) pay for selling out against the run that easily could have gone differently. You'll figure it out. Both these teams are top 15 teams, the new Big 12 is legit. Hold your head up, and I'm rooting for you all the way the rest of this year.

This is a great breakdown of the game. Both teams had many! opportunities to win, and what a game! We should set that meeting up @ Baylor next season, and see how it rolls. AND
    Provo, Utah is high.
BYU's LaVell Edwards Stadium sits at an elevation of 4,630 feet (google)
Baylor, Texas - Located on the banks of the Brazos River... (Wikipedia)
How high is the Brazos River?
    1,486 ft Brazos River (Google)
    A 3,144 Ft elevation difference.
Time! we're only an hour difference. Baylor shouldn't have been more overly tired than BYU was.
