I discovered the whole concept of organic pools thanks to your videos about 10 months ago and now I cannot wait to buy my first house and try tackling this project!
Nobody could miss the obvious. But I swear I've watched this 10X because I'm so into these water gardens..... The swimming would be a secondary benefit. I've surfed my whole life and won a 3.5 ocean marathon swim..... So, I would swim everyday in it. But, I'm mesmerized by the plants. THANKS AGAIN David, for sharing the coolest thing EVER. It's cheap, easily maintained, function and above all beautiful.
Wow after having build a regular type ( chlorinated ) pool I see this video. We are on top of a small mountain with a circular view. My wife is a farmer at heart and I know this would have suited her style much better than what we have. Fantastic - - garden pool !
I have seen natural pools made with regular pool shells. Here's one that another gentleman made with a "separate" filtration system th-cam.com/video/5sdxpLC97ak/w-d-xo.html
I have a challenge for you to consider . Convert a regular pool into an organic pool . Our mountain hill top has a natural basin next to it that is already over a meter lower than the cement pool. Can a separate organic pool or pond be made to link up to the commercial cement swimming pool to become the natural source of fresh water. The area for the filter pool would be quite large. We have lots of rain water here and I was trying to think of a pond to catch the extra water. Looking forward to your expert input on this as a challenge project. Think of have many existing pools that could benefit from this more natural technology. I am astonished at what you create.
Owen, instead of using Cedar planks, I'm using Railway Sleepers that are covered by Light Blue reservoir quality liner that I'm hoping will look lovely. If you want to see the end job let me know. Only pleased to pass on to you what I've done & learnt. I bought the plans from David but have changed things, hopefully they will improve what I'm attempting to do. My main concern is the pond aspect for snakes frogs Dragonflies and newts, not just swimming. I will create a thousand places for the creatures to hide and flourish in. Ideally I'm hoping to get Great Creasted Newts into the pond, that would be amazing. Southampton UK Southampton UK
Green sand is a special kind of hell. All the worst qualities of sand, all the worst qualities of clay. We've done two reasonable sized forestry jobs near Chard in Somerset, and it's not something I'd ever choose to work on again. Kudos for the fantastic end result.
Stunning pool, would ove to build one but not sure I could get one of your eco filters here inj South AFrica? YOur bubble pipes are easy to make as I watched that video of yours, but not sure about the filter pump! I do like the way you not only use water plants but grades of gravel to filter the water
since the pool is on the slope I assume it was very easy to do simple drainage with pipes, once they deiced that they didnt want natural clay pond and chose to go with the liner.

The time required to assess a natural pool is 6-8 years to see if all the regeneration zone needs to be rebuilt. Few people talk about that when promoting the concept. Three weeks is not an indicator. Experienced builders always start with a test hole to assess potential problems.
David & Owen....A huge thank you for showing your pool, I'm just digging out mine now. To see the filtration system inside the plant section is a big bonus for me & will save me a lot of time. Well Done...!!! Southampton UK
I have two main questions for the expert 1) The water in my pond comes from a spring. The flow is heavy and therefore the water is very cold. This summer I am going to restrict the flow and run the input water through a black pipe lying on the ground ( so as to possibly heat the water more). The flow will be just enough to maintain movement of water over the pond’s overflow pipe. 2)I am planning to pump the water out of the existing pond and line it with clay so as to minimize algae growth. Could you comment on my plans?
Lining with clay has no real bearing in terms of algae growth. The only way to limited algae is to design a system that maximizes beneficial processes that use up nutrients that would otherwise be available to algae. If you have a natural spring feeding your pond , your best bet could be to build a negative edge as the outflow, overwhich detritus can be taken (thus minimizing pond nutrients)
David I’m also interested in a lighter center part. Most pools in your channel have a dark center. How could make it lighter (sand or white stones maybe)?
This is also what would sell it for me, a lighter pool, more like a tropical pond. How could you achieve this? White sand in the bottom? Adding mineral to water like in Iceland lagoon?
I's a natural environment so there is sediment accumulating at the bottom, and sand would make it very hard to clean, I would assume that white flat stones, like marble or quartz maybe would work, but then the pool wouldn't look as natural in my opinion.
"Last words?" "What a way to go. See you on the otherside" *calmly jumps head first. Piano player doesnt react at all. * wish movies wrote endings as good as that
Thanks for the info re: the algae. Could you also suggest how I could realistically warm the water coming from that spring. It is too cold to swim in now.
Hi when the wooden frame has been submerged then it will anchor the gravel for as long as you want. Or don't use Cedar but Railway timber and cover with the liner. Southampton UK
Hi David, in India, an hdpe liner is more easily available than an epdm liner. I plan to excavate my soil and just add a geo textile layer and over it the hdpe liner. Do you think it would last
Looks so beautiful but I believe I can’t afford one the pool and two the beauty Nevertheless if a number popped out here and there for some future planning would be nice
Everytime I visit my backyard I see all kinds of animals like small garden snakes, toads and bugs I can’t imagine to have organic swimming pool like that 😆
I had an organic fish pond it used to fill up sediment in the bottom 6" a year then somehow eels found it & moved in for a while. fish where all eaten & the plastic membrane under the concrete got a leak & that was the end of the organic pool never again!
No, you don't get algae. At the time of filming this pond was only 3 weeks old (so you can experience things like New pond syndrome (NPS) , now the plants have fully established and it is crystal clear & super pretty.
Hiya , Thanks for your question, we had no way of filling that amount of water using rain water in our time frame so yes we laid a water pipe about 5th of a mile from the main house . Tap water isn’t ideal as it makes the water very green very quickly but sometimes you have no choice unfortunately. Thanks . Owen
Wanted to ask about cedar being under water. Does it tend to start to breakdown? Do you have anone who uses trex (plastic decking boards) type material for the wall caps?
Hi Organic S.Pool fans, please can anyone tell me what 2 sizes of gravel do you need.? Also I need to mix in sand with the gravel, what ratio is gravel to sand.? I'm building my 1st pool/pond at the moment. Many thanks Southampton UK

My pool's gonna need higher ends for flip turns! Atleast a small 1m wide area could be a bit higher?
Can you explain how the groundwater problem was solved? Did the builders add drainage or just wait for a really dry spell?
Dirty water pumps can be hired from most large hardware stores. Dry spell is easier though
since the pool is on the slope I assume it was very easy to do simple drainage with pipes, once they deiced that they didnt want natural clay pond and chose to go with the liner.
We installed an extensive sump and underneath drainage system as well as made shutters for wall foundations.
Very amusing & informative 👍🏻
What are the dimensions of the swimming area length width and depth and it's absolutely beautiful I'm hoping I can build one in the future
The swimming area depth is 2.2m , width is 5.5m, length is 12m
