  • This time on the MS Trust podcast we’ll be talking about eye problems in MS. Multiple sclerosis can affect your vision in several ways. Problems with your sight, such as optic neuritis, can be an early symptom of MS, but can also arise if you've had MS for some time.
To try and explain the ins and outs of visual problems we chat to Dr Benson Chen a neuro-ophthalmologist, about some common eye issues in MS and ask him some questions the MS community sent us.
We also chat to Deb about her own experiences with eye issues that eventually led to her MS diagnoses.

My first symptom of MS was severe Optic neuritis... I somehow lucked out and am in the 5% group that doesn't get their vision back. I am now blind in my left eye. Everything is a blur - I have to hold a book close to my eye to read words one by one. Everything is also black and white in that eye from the vague shapes I see. Was officially diagnosed last year, 6 months ago now... really shocked me, came completely out of the blue, im not even 30 yet...

The strange thing is when I had ON I had very little / no pain whatsoever. Was looking at presentations the entire day and thought my eyes were a bit tired, that same night I checked my eyes and was shocked that my left eye was extremely blurry. Went to bed thinking it was just a long day but realised that it only got worse* the next morning. Sorted out GP appointment who referred me to the hospital - it took 3-4 days before I got through to an optician / neurologist. By that point my entire left vision was black. Entirely black except for a tiny ring of periphery vision and even that was extremely blurry. Pumped me full of steroids 2 days later for three days in a row which I actually also had no problems from, none whatsoever. Now 10 months later I am still technically blind in my left eye. I sincerely hope I don't have another attack in my remaining eye - not sure what I would do if that were to happen :/ Pretty depressing. Thank you for the overview and for sharing :)

I went to the eye doctor several times, and everything came back fine. His reaction is that MS is “weird”.
My eyes flicker at night, like I compare it to a camera taking a snapshot, and when you make the shutter go slowly. It will like make my response time when I blinked like a slow shutter. My blinking was normal, but something with me processing the information.
Then I randomly get stars, or something where something is in my eye like a floater, that I can’t see for a while until it goes away.

I have this issue and my neurologist told me it’s just due to migraine. I was sensitive to light and even had loss of viaion when expose to sunlight and bright light. I’m from Philippines and it is not common here in our country.

I have Optic Neuritis due to MS since April 2023. I have only 30% vision on my right eye, my left eye is perfect! I was admitted in the Hospital after this for 5 days, was on medical steroids for 3 months… Took Rituximab, I have to take it every 6 months… Hope my right eye vision recovers 🎉. It's been more than a year 😢 But I'm hopeful, and I'm just 27😢

I lost the vision in my left eye about 5 years ago it lasted for about 1 hour and took half hour to recover. It consisted of a opaque greyness, eye clinic said they couldn't find the cause. It happened again last February but only lasted for about 6 minutes. Now having problems with blurring in my left eye and double vision. This is in addition to have a permanent problem with my balance. Getting a bit worried now as I have been fobbed off with "we can't find the cause", or the balance is caused by Cervical Spondylosis.

EBMD/Corneal erosion can cause some similar symptoms (light phobia, one sided eye pain, pain on eye movement, blurry vision) and be hard to explain to an optometrist or a boss.

Thank you for sharing. That must be really difficult and frustrating to manage as a regular symptom. Sending you best wishes from the MS Trust.

Suddenly colors , especially red , appeared too Vivid , in a bad way . Red was too red . Examination of the eye didnt show anything , after two weeks colors went back to normal. Doctor said lets fix your classes first as they are off , and then lest wait to see if the eyes are going to be better . I am sure that this is a form of optic neuritis .
