  • In this video I check out the Sony FE 85mm F1.8 prime lens for video use. Is this lens overshadowed by Sony’s 85mm G master F1.4 or is this a hidden gem? I wanted to know what kind of image we can get, how well it’s built, whether it’s good value and overall whether it’s any good for video. Enjoy!

      Is there an option/settings in Sony mirrorless cameras to get a linear focus response like there is in Panasonic?? I'm a film maker and I want a linear focus response for retakes. Focus by wire system is not good for manual focusing.

      I bought this lens on a recommendation from a photographer friend a few years ago. He told me I was making a mistake when I sold it, and after three months I ended up buying another one. I haven't found anything comparable (size, weight, results), so I'm happily stuck with it lol.

    Very nicely done video buddy, couldn't have subscribed any quicker! I own the 85mm 1.8, and I have some friends which mostly use the 85 1.4, I've noticed the focusing is a bit slower than the 1.8, especially once you get closer to the camera. Great job! 💪😊👌

    I got this one 2 years ago for portraits and loved it. Then sold it as I had the super sharp 90mm macro 2.8 for products and did not want to have an almost same focal length. 2 months ago I bought the 85 again and love it for video!!!

    Purchased recently and agree it's an absolute hell of a lens for the price. I use it on my FX3 and after I edit and grade, it looks amazing. Thanks for the review, I think this will help tons of shooters! Cheers brother 🍻

    Hey Harv! I hadn't ever really utilized the focus hold button on any of my lenses, so on my FX3 I've changed it to a quick access for my IBIS! Tends to save me a little bit of time each shoot!

    Focus hold button useful functions are peaking on/off or display on/off. Both so you can quickly get a look at the shot without all the data or peaking getting in the way

    Long time viewer dropping a comment for some good ol engagement for the youtube skynet thingy. Love this lens. Got it a few years ago. Plenty CA wide open but corrected in photos, but it stands out in videos. Fine stopped down a stop though. With the a7iv focus breathing compensation is a cool thing. Can’t recommend the lens enough, always with me. I don’t think if feels plasticy. Then again ive never even held a GM so.

Please suggest the top portrait lens (budget is unlimited) with the most gorgeous blurred background. And the second lens for shooting 4k travel video with the maximum possible quality and the minimum possible weight, that would for a day of walking around new cities shoulder and back said thank you)))

    The main difference from the filmmaking perspective my friend is the linear manual focus. I know, autofocus is the way to go for most of the times, BUT: on 85s and 50s, but specially 85mm lenses, the character and style of the shooter comes with manual focus use. That’s what I believe and experienced through my years as a videographer. And modern lenses, GMs as well, have a focus by wire instead of true linear focus motor making manual focus impossible. GMs though (at least 50, 85 and 135) fixing that and manual focus can be properly pulled no matter the speed. So nor the build quality or the sharpness is the key difference. The linear focus is. 👍

    Seems like I will end up buying it anyway. Having a weather sealing gasket was a surprise as most others said it doesn't which put it off my radar a bit. For portrait I think I'll start with Samyang 135mm AF f/1.8 first.

    I've owned this lens a couple of times. And I compared the 85mm 1.8 to the 85mm GM which I also owned. Very little difference. So, since I want to start shooting primes again, I've ordered the 85mm 1.8 again. Great lens for the price, imo.

    Size. Weight. Co$T. It isn’t only video guys that appreciate these differences.
    I am a street photographer and favor 35 & 50mm focal lengths. I just purchased the A7C. My 1st full frame and Sony camera. After purchasing the 35/1.8 I’ve been watching Professor Hines advocating this lens for street photography. I returned from taking an excellent & fun video class at GLIP last night and my 85/1.8 was waiting for me from MPB. Maybe I’ll turn into a video guy. Professor Hines does both with this lens.
    As I’m using a small body, the 85/1.4 makes no sense for me. I don’t know if there is a discernible difference between the image quality of these lenses. If there is, I’m willing to choose the 85/1.8 because of its diminished weight, size, and cost. Thank you for this video.

    What about the linear motor shake when it’s off
    “Re: Sony 85mm f/1.8 clicking noise when off
    Jul 19, 2021
    That is normal for voice coil linear drives. The focus elements move via electro-magnet coils just like a standard speaker. When there is no power they can slide freely. The sensor stabilization system in the camera uses them too. I wouldn't recommend shaking the camera that hard or the lens with the power off. The FE 85 F1.8 has two of them that work together. The fastest focusing lenses tend to use these. There are other focusing motors that don't slide freely without power.”

    I use a Zeiss Contax 85 1.4. Heavy CAs but the picture is magical. Still can not find a lens in this price range beside grading up to the GMs.

      @Kirinji1kirinji 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't know if you've already bought it, but I would suggest considering the Zeiss Batis 85mm, too, which has OIS built-in. I just rented one for wedding video shoot last week and its OIS worked flawlessly with my FS5 (no IBIS, Super 35 sensor, roughly equal to APS) on a monopod!
      One caveat is the long focus throw and non-textured focus ring.

  • @bryanbuff

    IMO, this lens is 95% as good as the GM and maybe better in some ways. But it’s $1200 cheaper, and significantly lighter and smaller. It’s a must buy.

    Some people say Sigma 85 1.4 dg dn outperforms even GM lens. I can say it is super sharp, with beautiful bokeh and without any CA. I shot even sport events with it. But it’s focus breathing is huge. And because of it it is hard to use it for video

    A big chunk of Tamron is owned by Sony. Tamron also makes some of Sony's lenses. Tamron doesn't make an 85mm prime,....prolly because Sony said: "Nope"...... ;-)

    • @chosenideahandle
      @chosenideahandle ปีที่แล้ว

      Sony owns 12.07% of Tamron, so Sony likely has no say at all. I wouldn't be surprised if their help with AF is some leverage Sony has over Tamron, (since it's so good). Tamron currently looks to only be interested in zooms anyway, and it seems it has paid off.

    This lens is meh. Sorry but I owned this and the Zeiss way blows it away. This lens is insanely plastic and will break easily if you drop it on carpet. I know I did. And this inside is so hollow. I took it apart and repaired the lens autofocus after it broke. I didn’t trust this so bought the more solid sharper and prettier Zeiss Batis.

    • @chosenideahandle
      @chosenideahandle ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It certainly doesn't blow it away. If you look at the DXO mark tests the Sony actually beat the Batis. Unless you really need the stabilization it's a bit of a waste. What is a prettier lens is subjective of course, but the metal focus ring on the Sony is more practical if you shoot in inclement weather. The AF is just as easily broken in the Batis BTW.

    • @Chris-ey7zy
      @Chris-ey7zy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chosenideahandle DXO? Really. Look with your eyes. You Nerd photographers suck. Honestly photography is an art if you can’t see the difference with your eyes then you are blind. The Zeiss has its own look and it’s way cleaner. Look at the color , sharpness and the unique look Zeiss has not to mention consistency between lenses plus build quality. Taking photos is an art. Maybe you should learn how to look and critique art and what looks pretty to actually judge one lens from another not some Goofy Chart
