    • @TheDajunior
      @TheDajunior 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Phil Jones65 adopted lenses perform really poorly and they are designed for dslr which means huge size and bad weight balance on mirrorless.

    • @TheDajunior
      @TheDajunior 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Phil Jones65 yes and no. In fact lenses itself are similar in size on any system. Bigger lenses either have bigger aperture or more complex optical scheme. So saying that some minolta lens is smaller means that it has smaller operture or older optical scheme causing worse image quality. It's why for example takumar 50 1.4 is so tiny in comparison to carl zeiss 50 1.4 lens for sony. The difference is about 3 times in size.
      My point was - what reason to buy a compact mirrorless and make it bulky and performing poorly using adopters? I bought it because mirrorless have accurate AF(no misses like on dslrs), eye AF functionality(doesn't work via adopters except insanely pricy metabones) and small size. To have these advantages it's necessary to have native lenses.
      Moreover many(but not all of course) native sony lenses have best image quality on the market. For example sony 85 1.8 fe from this video has 46 points on dxomark. There is no better lens on the market for such price. So I don't understand how you're going to save money using adapters and loosing AF performance and some features like eye AF if there is no cheaper dslr lens with better or even equal image quality on the market.

    • @TheDajunior
      @TheDajunior 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Phil Jones65 the truth is you save money buying native lenses. Adapter + dslr lenses only seem to be saving of money but the reality is you sacrifice performance and features. If you had dslr lenses before switching to a7 - it's another story, but I didn't have any lenses before. So if you buy lenses from the scratch you don't save anything using adapters + dslr lenses because they are not really cheaper. And you are not forced to buy GM lenses because there are alternatives.
      I also used only central focusing point before when I was a canon shooter, but it works only on telephoto lenses. If you try this trick on a wide lens you'll get a focus miss. You can also say that AF isn't necessary, before people used manual focusing all the time. Okay, but before people also used horses as a transport, so I don't get your point. I don't want to pay for modern technologies but use them as in cave times.

    • @TheDajunior
      @TheDajunior 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Phil Jones65 99% of vintage lenses are crappy. You can think that your lenses are sharp until you try 55 1.8 or 85 1.8. So yeah, better don't try them because you will be totally disappointer how bad old lenses are. I tried them a lot and my decision is paying for native sony lenses. Smart people don't waste their time for crappy vintage lenses.

    Thanks, Manny! When I was chosing between these two, I had similar impressions. Sony's 85mm f1.8 is praised by most reviewers and that speaks a lot. For non-pros like me a cheaper option is the way to go. For working photographers the f1.4 is a no brainer, in my opinion. Thanks for inpsiring us, man! I bought Sony system thanks to you and a couple of other photographers and have no regrets at all. Cheers.

    Very informative Manny! As someone who does NOT earn money off photography, I always grab the cheaper, albeit high performing, lens. Whenever I do come across a couple thousand dollars while raising a family, camera lenses never get put on the top of my priority list. That said, I think of my 85mm 1.8 as a top premium portrait lens (in my own little world) because in my opinion, it STILL gives me that dreamy background look under the right conditions.

    I do very much like videos like this. Anyone else who does anything like this *tends* to only post short 20 or 30 second clips of just one aspect that you covered. It's helpful to have it all in one place with someone who has a better idea of what they're doing and better ways to record and show the results.
    One idea I have though is comparisons to vintage lenses. You mention you like the rendering of the G Master more, and vintage lenses are known to be desirable for their rendering (thinking specifically about the Nikon 105 f/2.5). A good *knowledgeable* comparison to older lenses if someone is willing to sacrifice AF for certain characteristics would be cool.

    I personally prefer the aperture ring because I can change the settings with the camera off, but I do understand your gripes with always accidentally touching it. In a similar fashion, I disable the touchscreen because I always accidentally hit the corner triggering a focus point in the corner. But I am also glad to have it since it makes video focusing much easier

    Both are special lenses. I have the 1.8. I think though the 85GM just has that x-factor that makes it a future legend, with low vignetting wide open and the most smooth bokeh of any 85 1.4, while being plenty sharp at its widest.

      it is more more important and people wont notice the less or slightly less blur to the back. they will notice the sharpness though. think about this you can add more blur by moving yourself back a bit and having the model come with you. with the 1.4, to get its sharpness of the 1.8, you have to stop it down a little to get that which negates the benefit of the 1.4. you want sharp at 1.4, the sigma art trumps the GM. search vids and see yourself.

      The GM is very sharp by modern standards and in the the 85mm focal length there's no denying that it's rendering is the more pleasing classical-esque portrait lens. The Sony is way cheaper and waaaaay lighter. That's why it's a winner to me. I prefer the GM rendering for portraits in this focal length; hands down. The Sony makes much more sense for most people.

    gracias brother for the vid. super helpful. I have the f1.8 and love the results. I have shot with the 1.4 (rental) and you are 100% on the smooth background. But the 1.8 is still very usable and I get to save $1200-- keep them coming. Can't wait for your vid on why you are thinking of downgrading to the A7M3. That is my camera, so love to hear your take.

    Nice balanced review, feel it's a case you'll miss the 1.4 if you have it but if new to 85mm the 1.8 is the way to go, faster AF and ergonomically ideal for the camera plus a huge saving, (which a newbie could spend on lighting). If bokeh is a deal breaker then look for situations when subject to background distance can be extended or camera to subject distance decreased.

    Yo,Manny! S/o to you for giving a straight answer to the question " Is is worth it over the other?"! Have the feeling a lot of TH-camrs these days are just tiptoeing around a direct answer to simple question. They're always like "Is for you to decide." or "Whatever suits you best." . I mean like when people are indecisive the last thing they should hear when seeking advice is "you pick". So just thumbs up for keeping it clean and on point! :)

    Thank you for the comparison video. For me, it comes down to my being able to spend that $1200.00 difference on other camera gear. In fact, that is what I did and I love my 85mm 1.8 Sony lens. I was able to pick up a Tamaron 28-75 F/2.8 with the savings. Thanks again, Manny.
