I love the cottage garden style, my cottage style involves just ramming as many different plants in as I can, i love the chaos 😅
I ended up with apricot orange colored flowers from being mismarked at the nursery but when they bloomed they were stunning against my purple and blue flowers. Sometimes change is invigorating.
You're so right. And there is quite a bit of plant mislabelling, so it's lucky that it often turns out well.
I ended up with the same colored rose for that same reason. My garden is pink and lavender. I don't think the rose bush looks right in the mix.
Got some impatiens from clearance that I thought would be pink. Took them home, they bloomed and turned out to be the most beautiful bright coral. Almost neon. It was such a lovely surprise. 🌸 🪴 ✨

Watching this wonderful video and all the while having an obsession with yellows oranges and reds. I feel a rebellious cottage garden coming on
what works for me is setting a goal of planting one or two things I've never grown before each year--perennial or annual, no matter. You'd be surprised how quickly your garden grows up and out with just this one constraint, i.e., each year two new.
That's a good tip!
How different we all are. I wouldn't feel complete without my sunflowers so the no yellow rule wouldn't do for me. Lovely gardens to see.

You can't go wrong with cosmos, tobacco, and a sweet pea wigwam. That's my basis for a cottage garden, but even without those 3, so long as it looks wild and chaotic and colourful you're doing something right. It should look colourful, yet wild.
Must be the fourth time I've watched this and love and learn so much. Fennel and angelica is a must this year, I agree.
One of my rules was no orange, then a few orange flowers popped up on their own and I haven't the heart to pull them - had to learn to love them. Always enjoy your posts, thank you!
I never wanted orange or yellow either, just blue, purple and white...Then somehow the yellow cone flowers and black-eyed Susan's started growing from my late next door neighbor's garden that was dug out and mulched over and that was followed by sundrops and yellow evening primroses and yellow irises. I guess it's all about compromising.

This was very helpful and encouraging! I very recently had all my sod removed with the goal of creating a cottage style garden in the Rocky Mountain West, Montana, USA. I plan to use drought and cold tolerant plants. I hope to reduce my water use and create something beautiful for passersby. It is such a big project, at times I feel overwhelmed. Watching this gave me heart. Thank you.

I'm 24. My cottage garden I laziness disguised as opulence. I throw dozens of plants into a small area. Annuals mostly, and some native "weeds" like forget me not, columbine and Welsh poppy which I never planted. I try anything and keep what both thrives, and looks good. Throw everything in chaoticly, and order will arise. Organised chaos, and eccentricity is the key to a good, unique, 21st century cottage garden.

Love to watch your well presented and informative videos. I can listen to you for ages. Keep on going! Can not understand the thumbs down. You said it very well: No lawn, fruit-trees for hight, and ever plant you like to grow plus a little wildflower - tada you have a cottage garden ;o) And even you have lawn or you like your lawn it is no problem. There is no cottage garden police that will arrest you for having a lawn. BUT think about a wild flower meadow with path mown in it, if you have enough space.

Fabulous video. I am thrilled to find out that I am a member of the cottage garden tribe! All the elements you described are found in our urban plot. If a task is something I find enjoyable, then it's not work. I detest spraying fruit trees, regardless if the treatment is organic, and using motorized tools, finding I am way more tired after doing those chores then if I spaded the whole day! But yes, a cottage garden is CRAMMED with plants. It's cosy, the greenery is close by, and the connection between the gardener and nature is palpable.

My favourite garden style! Here in the tropics, people love their formal hibiscus and bougainvillea hedges but I love the joyous abandon of colourful cottage borders. More videos like these please, Alexandra!
I have a large square front lawn close to a windy coast, in full sun with just a 10ft Indian almond tree and a 25ft Bismarck palm as the only trees, so I am in the process of establishing 3ft border with curving beds around the perimeter to break it all up. So far I have planted peach oleander, golden palms and purple texas sage for punctuations of height with light blue plumbago and spicy scarlet and golden yellow lantana for the next height level. I am looking at sweet potato vine, hardy rice ferns and foxtail ferns and other ground covers that can take the heat for the lower level. Here and there I have croutons, ficus, billowy green and purple grasses and lilies which flower once a year but sport thick grass-like foliage year-round.
I too live where its almost tropical but there are still some beautiful colourful plants that make a cottage garden look. I have Michaelmas daisy, various salvias of different heights, geraniums / peargoniums, Angelonia in several colours, agapanthus, Gaura or wand flowers. All are tough and cope well with conditions here
Just a word of caution: oleanders are poisonous - so be very careful if you have pets or children. I think they are lovely, but years ago, when I learned they were poisonous, I took them out of my garden just to be on the safe side.
@@margaretd3710 - I've had oleanders & Angel's Trumpets for decades. No issues with pets or children being poisoned.
My dog borders on being a herbivore when it comes to eating grass, & flowers like hibiscus. I was considering removing them for fear he would eat them. But for the past 10 years, he steers clear of the those two.

Because of my harsh garden conditions, and with the help Alexandra and many other wonderful gardenista vloggers, I begun to thoroughly research my plant choices so I am aware of oleander's toxicity. Luckily, I have no pets except my neighbour's cats (who come to chase my many green lizards) and my sons are well past plant-munching age! 🌺
I tried to identify my gardening style after seeing this video, but I think I have to come up with a new word like "mindful" gardening.. Still thinking 😄 thanks for the very informative video, sure that took you a lot of time and research! Really appreciate it 😊
Love and appreciate all garden styles you presented. I'm not fond of red flowers and I've never shared that with anyone. I received three red flowering plants for mothers day this year. I've since changed my mind.

I love the cottage style and in fact I designed my garden four years ago in just this design. I have a channel on here that shows a video compilation on what it looked like last summer. I used orange and yellow with purple and pink in places to contrast and to draw the eye through the border. You are correct, it is good to plant trees to add height to the border and I intend to grow climbing roses such as madam Alfred carrierre up through my black boy peaches in the orchard cottage garden. Being in New Zealand, we still have a draw to the mother land and when I was a child I always looked through gardening books with gorgeous and romantic cottage gardens, which was the inspiration for my very own garden.
I would love to see more on cottage gardens from you, and thanks again 👌😃

I always loved the idea of a cottage garden. Now (living in the UK) I have one! My borders are so crammed (and I've had so much time) that there are no weeds! What a bonus! I do have some orange geums though.

My hedged garden rooms of six now added a cottage garden room .I loved this blog of yours as it came just at right time to meet with my build.Like you colour but always classical formal softened by planting .Then this cottage garden build I do intend to work beyond the book of rules as free as the wind in fact .Bit of Chris Lloyd and Percy Thrower really added to my take of how an old English cottage garden really looked

That white astilbe was gorgeous! My Japanese astilbe is glorious this year, my cottage garden has English thyme and gorgeous sage that is flowering abundantly. However my Dame’s rocket isn’t doing well this year due to a late frost in our area.

Thank you Alexandria. I have a cottage garden even though the house is very modern. I believe it is also having a moment. But I don't care what the trend is my cottage preference will be consistent to this style. Most of the houses in my estate all had two or three yuccas and a couple of other boring plants. I'm glad I bucked the trend to have something much more pretty and interesting. It now seems more gardens here are changing to a more cottage style which is so much more pleasing. Thank you Alexandra for this beautiful video. I do garden this way , the cottage garden, everything tossed together and I usually leave plants where they have popped up from seed, so it is very mixed up. I have never thought of having a rule but I am especially drawn to pink, purple, lavender and white because I find that soothing, but my garden has all colors. I put my flower garden on one side and the other side is all green shrubbery and pachysandra which balances for me all the color on the other end. Hope you are having s beautiful weekend!

I have to say how refreshing it is to watch this informal and abundant approach to cottage gardens.
It has grown a little tiresome to be told of the rules, style and the plants that are an absolute must which totally misses the point of a cottage garden.

Love the theory and practice; but have to adjust the species for survivors of long hot humid summers here in SE USA
What an enjoyable video, thank you! I watched it several times. I have a video request. In this video you refer to a 'practical working area'. I don't have a potting shed, I don't know if I want one but I would like a place to keep my pots, soil and tools. I would love to see what others have and what they do if they don't have a potting shed. Actually I do have a potting shed but the chickens reside there.
That's an excellent suggestion. I will hunt around for some good practical working areas. When I lived in a house with a small courtyard garden and no room for a shed, I had a small lean-to outdoor cupboard fitted against a wall. It was surprising how much it held.
I'm starting a cottage garden at my new farm of 12 acres.
I do have grass but only because it was there and I have no perrenial or shrubbery just yet.
As I get more and more perrenials,bulbs and shrubs I will cut the beds larger and finally remove the lawn..
I have many wild and airy annuals planted from seed that can re seed themselves. Daucus carota , cosmos , zinnia, forgetr me not. Etc, etc

Lovely to watch this. I'm starting growing some little fruit shrubs/trees in my garden. I picked up raspberry and blackberry. Also adding some Hebes to my eventual front hedge. My back garden which is middle sized is a South aspect. While my front garden is a north aspect and is rather small. My goal with the north garden is to provide as much privacy as possible. My goal with the back is to support wildlife first and foremost. I have two ponds and I saw your advice on allowing shallower and deeper parts of the pond, so I'm going to rectify that situation with a piece of lumber dipped in so wildlife can crawl out if it needs to. I'll do that on both ponds

One of the gardens you described sounds a lot like my goals for the patio garden I'm designing. All the plants have to earn their keep in such a small space, so the small number of plants that are neither edible nor medicinal are useful for attracting pollinators and repelling pests.
It's actually a lot less limiting than most people think. If one considers all the ornamental herbs, flowers that can be used for tisanes and garnishes, and trendy pseudocereals like buckwheat and amaranth, there's a massive selection of things to interplant with the fruit trees and berry bushes.

Although even with shade, I think much of the same principles apply. Shady gardens are so nice, and definitely easier to look after as weeds seem to grow more slowly on my shady side.

Most informative. I never knew exactly what the elements of a cottage garden were to explain it to someone else. Although I’ve seen them before. One was at Dove Cottage in the Lake District. Here in Upstate South Carolina I’ll have to go for a subtropical cottage garden with daffodils and dutch irises followed by bearded irises, tiger flowers, and dianthus. Daylilies, echinacea, artimesia, daisies, ornamental red okra, Elephant Ear, American asters and goldenrod.

Ah interesting here in Bulgaria , our garden has taken on its own life, self seeders are a must ! Perovskia , which I sowed from seed , pops up everywhere, as does the euphorbia, scabious, hollyhocks, Yarrow is taking over the grassed area ! We are having a lot of rain this June so the everlasting sweet pea , pink and white has self seeded in many places even through a buddleia ! ( I thought I had rid the garden of it ) now I welcome all insundry to my little paradise. Even creeping st John wort has filled an area deemed unmangeable now a glorious matt of sparkling yellow I also found a group of fox gloves seedlings ready to move , Must go have work in the garden to do , thank you !
