This video was so much work, but I think it's one of my best, so I believe my efforts were worthwhile. I figured that there would probably be some objections and/or questions from some of you, so before I uploaded this animation, I uploaded a commentary video for it on my other channel. You can watch it here: th-cam.com/video/glbYM-k7blI/w-d-xo.html Thank you to those who have kept my channel going by spreading my videos around. It especially helps me because animations take so long to make, thereby causing these long periods of inactivity on my channel. So, I greatly appreciate it when I see people sharing my work.
+DarkMatter2525 This was like art. It takes some thought before the watcher can fully understand the message. It's very different from your other work. As always, keep up the good work.
it's quality and message is outstanding, you should be very proud of yourself. The more philosophical focus of your recent videos almost makes up for the wait...
"appreciate what we have" I heard that countless times before and never could really emotionally grasp it. Your video changed that. This is a masterpiece. Thanks so much!
Well, from my personal perspective, many things said in this particular video is true.... For example, the people of the Old World aka Modern Era, is so narcissistic to the point where we just CANNOT resist attempting to project our self-centered ways on others. One such examples are the Liberal Americans who thought themselves to be so peaceful, equal, united, & perfect in every way that they thought every other nations & states should be just like them... But alas, all those rambling about NOT ONLY peace, equality, justice, & freedom, but every little virtues & values they encouraged in the end, were mostly nothing but lies, hypocrisies & falsehoods, mostly born from one sided reasoning, or self-centered logic & deductions..... Because while most NORMAL people in not only USA, but probably many other nations & states alike may SEEM to live happily, but in reality, their lives are constantly plagued by these lies, hypocrisies, & falsehoods which not only sucks out what little power & control they have, but also colossal amounts of hope & happiness as well.... This is not only limited to those who actually have hard lives, but also to those who SEEM like they live happy & blessed lives, but deep inside their mental & emotional exterior, a storm of despair & other emotions as well as feelings brewing in them. Even with all of that, almost no one would listen to them, mainly because they only care about stereotypical images they have about these people or JUST MERELY one side of the entire story, as such is MY PERSONAL Case.... People around me told me that they do not care about my sides of the story, simply because of this stereotypical images about people who SEEMINGLY live blessed & happy lives should not be allowed to complain about anything and remain silent & subservient forever.... And if you continue trying to complain or rebelling or even attempting to stand firm against this colossal hypocrite CHURCH of modern Corruption as well as their SO CALLED "Innocent Civilians", aka the fat, lazy, negligent, arrogant, narcissistic, & one sided people whose allowed to do WHATEVER they want to people like you, simply NOT ONLY because of the stereotypes but also because this is "Their Society" and that those who do not remain subservient & just do not only what those in authorities tell them, but those who are DEEMED to live much harder lives than them tells them to, & like I said in the above, if you continue to squirm against your chains too much, then the so called "Ultimate Good Guys" of planet Earth, aka Police & other combative forces who serve the church will cart you away to a place where these people attempt you to reduce you to nothing but this groveling piece of waste & call the entire thing justice, redemption, or even something like atonement.... These are kinds of things the Church of Modern Corruption, aka Most & Many of Modern World's Liberal, Democratic, Modernized & Industrialized Societies, States, & Nations ALIKE do to those who question or attempt to stand in defiance against their hypocrisies, lies, & falsehoods (This includes the USA as well...). All in which they solely rely on as a Powerful Weapon to BOTH justify whatever they want as well as getting away with almost anything. These kinds of things are THE GRIM & DARK TRUTHS behind almost all personal & life stories of Criminals, Terrorists, & sometimes dictators alike.... A dark truth which everyone in the world is attempting to bury it under their hypocrisies, lies, & falsehoods, all so that they do not have to take the rightful blame for them.... (Just like Yahweh in Power Corrupts series..)
@@reoshimizu6853 my experience is the same as yours, except it is the conservatives, not the liberals, who bring inequality, lies and deceit. I also live in an area where my opinions seem to not be allowed as well. I guess the grass is always greener, and whether people identify as liberal or conservative, they mostly are selfish, ignorant assholes
@@tlibito um here's an idea instead of diverting all the blame to one side whilst glorifying another how about just telling both sides to fuck off and not choosing any of them
Rewatching this, I'm reminded of a thought I had while playing Dragon Age: Inquisition: "I love playing video games, because I get to pretend that my life matters."
Damn. If you feel you want to matter chose something you want to do and do the best at that one thing. If you succeed everything you can move on to the next. That's what every person you know of that changed history did.
Kind of depressing mate, speaking as ancient video game royalty(not yet disgruntled) that has been playing video games since Space Invaders came out I play video games for fun. Still I'm not much for the story based games more the mechanics based games so perhaps I'm not the most understanding of this perspective. Either way buddy please try to remember one thing, your life matters regardless of video games or any other bullshit we do, as long as you are at least a good person then your life not only matters but it is necessary for the good of us all.
@@jackeilhigh The question is _in what way_ someone's life matters. My life certainly matters to a crapton of nitrogen molecules that I've in- and exhaled, but I don't give a damn about them. It also matters to the children I haven't had so far, but I don't give a damn about them either. My life does _not_ matter one bit to the moon, or to Kim Yong-Un, or to some random person in New York, or to some ant in the Amazonian rain forest, or... Hell, does my life matter to _you_ for example? Would you even notice if I died shortly after writing this comment - or would you simply assume the far more likely case that I overlooked a notification or didn't care enough to write anything else? Sure, this comment may have something reselbming an intended effect on you (and maybe others who read it), and I care enough about _that,_ which is why I'm writing it in the first place. But that's not exactly what anyone would call "giving my life meaning", is it? How much do I care about everything and everyone to whom my life does _not_ matter? In the vast majority of cases, not at all, so it doesn't matter that my life doesn't matter in those cases. But there _are_ quite a few cases where I would want my life to matter, but where it would be completely irrational to think that I could _make_ my life matter to them. Kim Yong-Un being one such example. _Could_ I make my life matter to him? Maybe, but chances are very high that I'd fail and lose everything else (probably because I'd lose my life, or at the very least my freedom). Of course that's just an extreme example, but there are quite a few not-so-extreme ones where it would _still_ be utterly delusional to think that I could make my life matter in this or that case where I would very much want it to matter (or at least make it matter more than "doesn't even register unless you use extremely senstive measuring tools"). There's also the question of what methods I have available to make my life matter in some cases, and whether I can change _that._ Can I make myself suitable to be an astronaut under the current circumstances? Certainly not. Can I make myself politically savvy and connected enough to become a country leader before I die? Maybe not mathematically impossible, but so unlikely that it would be delusional to think that I can. I do get the idea behind the "your life matters" - it's basically the same as the old "you can be anything you want to be". But it's a deepity - it's trivially true, but the trivial level doesn't matter, only the profound level matters - and on the profound level, it's utterly false.
You've evolved brilliantly over the years, DarkMatter. I used to watch your videos because their satirical content of religion was funny and accurate, but now your channel has evolved well beyond parodies. You're starting to touch the most fundamental problems of society. You're becoming a true artist. Great work.
+George orwell people are too flawed. As an AI in Deus Ex once said. Your governments only work because they attempt to account for human corruption. Idk man, personally the idea of an invader zim style control brain(AI royalty, basically) is sounding better and better to me.
My favorite part: We were so envious, so narcissistic. The beneficiaries, the selfies; obsessed with seeing ourselves in everything. The world was our mirror. Rarely could we even take a picture of a beautiful place any more - unless we were standing in front of it. We turned the cameras from the world to ourselves, something else to upload to our many social media soap boxes. Each of us turned into a politician, with insincere words carefully crafted, measured, and shared to appeal to as many like minded people as possible.
The old world is coming to an end now, thanks to these very narcissists and politicians. For our part, all we can do is to focus outwards towards others and away from ourselves, for at the end of the day we are just flesh and bone which will decay and rot once we are gone.
Welcome to communism, here we have starvation and totalitairianism, but also life without profit incentives and non corrupt politicians. Take your pick!!
+Mira Smit I coul not have put it better myself. Thank you Darkmatter. I have been watching your uploads for a long time and i apreciate them very much.
"Together we stand, united we fall" how true indeed and with such a safe world now people turn on each other because they don't bother to understand one another.
The problem is of course that humans are both social creatures as well as selfish ones - and the ratio varies from individual to individual. When a much more social person "unites" with a much more selfish one, the social one "loses", the selfish one abuses that "unity" and ruins the social one. So, should social people unite with selfish ones? Should social people try to turn selfish ones into more social ones - which, it turns out, may simply be neurologically impossible (unless our medical tech advanced _a lot,_ and we would actually be willing to medically change people's personalities to something more "acceptable", which in turn would be _extremely_ questionable behaviour...)? How should we deal with that problem?
"More depressing than losing it was that we never appreciated it... She couldn't understand being enraged by losing a few seconds of time on a daily commute."
+Miguk Moonpark He has a jet that survived the annihilation. He just didn't want to let the others know about it because they would want to "borrow" it. He probably has lots of cool things that he's not talking about, being the only survivor of the old world, so that he can continue his lavish lifestyle in secrecy. Freakin' hypocrite.
+The Timber Wolf What are you talking about, baby boomers are some of the most pc retards out there (hippies). And why bring racism into an argument for no reason?
I don't think you phrased your statement grammatically correct. It may be technically correct, but it definitely does not convey your point. Try again.
I have been hoping to see something like this from you for a while. "The sky isn't the limit" is one of my favourite videos that you made and that is the first time you talked about a similar concept (that I'm aware of, of course), which even then I found captivating. I think your channel has been going from great to even better than great, as of late, so great job, DarkMatter, really really great job
+DarkMatter2525 Ser DankMatter, Lord of all things Dank, I wish to humbly thank thee, from the bottom of my heart, for your continuation of these wonderful videos. Seriously. you're awesome.
+The Liberator I mean like medical miracles lol. Like miracles about a someone about to die and they get an amazing treatment from doctors but they want to thank god instead. Christian just refuse to understand that if it's not impossible, than it's not a miracle
Being unsatisfied with the status quo is the very thing that advanced our world to it's present state. Progress doesn't come from people who are satisfied with what they have. Change is always dangerous but the alternative is stagnation.
Sadly, I understand this feeling all too well... there are times when I realize... how good I have it compared to others, how privileged even the poorest amongst us now live here in America... kinda why I hate to see so much hate, so much anger, so much divisiveness... when I see how fragile our world really is... This is what we should really fear; losing this glorious world we have created for ourselves. Let us not forget the fall of the Roman Empire into the dark ages... largely destroyed from within, crippled by internal stripe, only to be destroyed by savages in the end... those who learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
There's one thing that I think DM got at least partially wrong though, and that we shouldn't ignore. It's most noticeable in the road rage example: The assumption is that people road rage because they lose a few seconds, but I'm pretty sure the underlying motivation is far more basic - it's about social behaviour and perceived injustice, resulting in an attempt to punish the perceived wrong-doer, if necessary even at a relatively high cost to oneself. It's not "I'll get home five seconds later" - it's "I'll get home five seconds later _because_ of a situation involving someone who is harming - and is likely to continue harming - the "traffic tribe" that I am part of". Overall, it's not about how good I have it - it's about how good I have it _in comparison to others within my society._ Yes, I have a really good roof over my head, electricity, pretty much all the high-quality drinking water I could ever want, devices to communicate and entertain and... - but how much _more_ do some other people have without giving even remotely proportionally back to our society? How could _anyone_ possibly be contributing a thousand times more to this society than me, let alone ten thousand or a million times - and yet, they _have_ a thousand/ten thousand/a million times as much as I have. _That_ injustice is what makes me so unhappy.
Well its easy. Love your people not money, teach them the consept of honour at the earliest age, teach them we are not apart from the nature and we should live symbiosis with the nature and animals, not to exploit them, teach your people about the poison called lies, repeat catchfrases like"death to lies". Prove your people they can trust you and you can make it. Today we have found out the secret our royalties, the oligarch and plutocrats try to hide from us, that just by disableing the poisonous central banking and nationalising the creation of money is key to wealth for whole nation unlike ever seen before. debt free money. If you have right idea in mind, you love your family, tribe and nation, you are sick of all this poison happening around us and have some balls and charisma.. Well, be the change of you want to happen. Lead a revolution. All is needed is some balls and a right idea.

I just saw this video for the first time, I'm rewatching it now. My favorite video this year has been Automata on cue by tale foundry. It's a short story worth a listen
Manchease Skrelpher So's peace apparently. I knew a supply teacher who brought up how she went to this festival to support peace and another teacher responded to her "oh we don't talk about that sort of thing here" This was before the sub said that all of the money made at the festival goes to the refugees that are coming over atm.
Shuster so what’s the word my friend? Did you end up using the video in your class at school? I know it has been 2 years since your comment on this video and you probably won’t even see/find/reply to me, but if you where able to actually use this video I am so super interested in your fellow classmates reactions as well as your teachers?
Wow! I keep thinking you can't top that last video you made, but you do. To truly become number one you must constantly strive to surpass yourself, not the competition!
That is exactly how it works. If you ever compare yourself to others, you are giving yourself an excuse to stop once you beat them. Never stop improving. If you make the gold medal, then beat the record. If you beat the record...beat it again. THAT is true competition - when you compete against the one man (or woman) that has no equal...yourself.
SpeakerWiggin49 You won't get to first place as is without hurting yourself. You probably won't even be allowed to compete for the gold medal without risking your health. "First place is good enough, no need to risk your health." If health is what you worry about, don't compete at all, competition is not healthy, it's a race to the finish where no price is too high to win it all.
Man I just discovered this channel and man everyone definitely must watch this regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, political beliefs, or religion. The way things are here now its important to unite and work together so everything we build up until now doesn't go to waste.
+Yuon Flemming I shall now admit that Im guilty of not subscribing just so I can blissfully forget to check the channel for a while until something new pops up. I'm addicted.
I agree with your overall message. I am often disgusted and disappointed with how many people don't stop to think about how lucky we all are and instead place all of their focus, value and attention into things that could easily be taken away and ultimately don't matter in the grand scheme of things. Maybe in a few more generations (assuming humanity survives that long) we will collectively wake up and treat each other and our lives with the reverence and respect we all inherently deserve. Keep up the great work.
You know those TH-cam "How would you rate this video" surveys that pop up from time to time? This video is the only one I would actually consider "Life-changing"
I think that my input on this great work of yours is that it is only because of our dissatisfaction that we achieved anything greater than the nomadic way of life. It is our dissatisfaction with the mobile phone that gave us the smartphone- and perhaps it will be the dissatisfaction with the smartphone that will give us the next revolutionary innovation in connection to each other. Through dissatisfaction, we achieve, even if our dissatisfaction is unjustified.
Things are probably more complicated than that but it's a good introspective for humanity overall. I've always believed that a lot of the petty "online wars" occur because, deep down, people are simply bored. Our lives are too peaceful, too safe, so we need to create conflict out of nothing to provide excitement and satisfy tribal urges. Anyway, great work.
Once in a while i return to this video to remind myself of what I have. When i find myself wanting more and more, i should be more thankful for how easy my life really is.
Yes, we're never satisfied. Which is why if we do fall to rock bottom, but manage to survive, we'll just start from scratch. We progress and fall like a pendulum swing. Brilliant work as always. I've watched every video you've made and not one I didn't enjoy.
This guys videos turned my world upside down. Now I enjoy my life so much more and understand so much more about the world. Thank you Darkmatter for being such a great influence on my life
Without technology we are *N-O-T-H-I-N-G*. Not our limitations, but our desire and ability to overcome them with technology is what defines us and makes us human. We're potential gods trapped in fragile, primitive animal bodies, and technology is the key to our freedom. Nothing wrong with being dissatisfied even when you have it _relatively_ good, btw. It's dissatisfaction that powers progress (inspires people to improve things), after all, not acceptance or gratitude. You've got to keep raising that bar until it reaches the heavens.
+Matt Parks There are loads of this, from short stories like what you mentioned to huge decade-spanning worlds like Fallout. I think it's a good thing, these cautionary tales. It never hurts to remember how close we actually are to losing everything we have built.
This video and your work must not be lost in history. You are so deep its scary. Just like another person said in the comments, used to watch ur vids way back for the sarcasm and the arguments u fed me with for when im discussing with ppl. But now ur page is becoming a very important piece of spiritual guidance for me, like you 're a buddha of our era. Im proud of u man !!! U do grasp the essence of things and know how to manifest.
This seems like the kind of thing Tombstone Da Deadman/ rational warrior was talking about in The 6th Extinction. "Their numbers swelled, their tech increased, but none of that could stop the beast. They kept consuming all the energy and never ceased. Can't stop the feast, in fact it made them hungrier. They turned upon each other like a blood lusting warmongerer, swarm of locusts all holding their smart phones and texting L.O.L. busy insultin' one another right until they all fell."
That's a good connection to make. Another idea that was similar from his music is the narrative that a certain portion of nationalistic Americans think that the society couldn't possibly fall. It's called Empire, it's pretty great.
"Cause every empire that's existed has has fallen to dust, And it's kind of ludicrous to think that the exception is us. But laugh me off and watch us walk the exact same road, And years from now this empire will be another story told."
This does a great job commenting on the issues present with both sides of any conflict being that it struck me as being particularly non-partisan, great job!
+gabriel tipantuna Arabs were being killed by ISIS and anonymous didn't do crap. a couple dozen Caucasians killed and they "won't forgive/forget". why they can forgive ISIS for killing thousands but not for killing Parisians? seem racist af.
DarkMatter2525. This video was absolutely amazing, no wonder there are lengths of time when no videos are uploaded. Time well spent! I wonder how much of a labor of love this was to create. Anyway thanks very much for reminding me of the reason why I subscribed to this channel, I can't wait for more deep and interesting topics like this.
This video is truly astonishing. Such an original concept. We usually see videos of this genre explaining the exact contrary to what is being expressed here, like how much better we have it now as opposed to the times of old. Feeling that we are somehow "Superior" to our ancestors from just a few hundred years ago. And yet we (In America) are still bickering amongst ourselves about what exactly our founding fathers wanted this nation to become. We feel intellectually superior to those who came before us, and yet we have people constantly getting into automobile accidents for paying too much attention to these smartphones we have, which were supposed to bring a feeling of connection and liberation from the outside world. Irony abounds.
8:40 "Rumors come to me...of a man across the seas to the east, trying to rebuild society. They call him...Dr. Stone. I pray he succeeds, and that the generation to follow will appreciate the technology that this man has brought to them."
This is a very important video, you have clearly demonstrated all of the topics that needed to be covered during this subject. I was struggling with depression because of all the bad news and me comparing my work with other students. But then realising this allowed me to appreciate the good things in this era. We still have our problems but we suffered a lot worse in the past.
+MadBrainBox do you have a citation for that? As far as I know, we've never determined if Cromagnon and Neanderthals fought or if we just outperformed them.
Magnus Bergmark I based that on older data. But even if our ancestors didn't cause the extinction of the Neanderthals they most likely had some conflicts with them.Considering we are a very violent species. If we're killing one another and killing other species I don't think our ancestors and them had a peaceful coexistence.
MadBrainBox fair enough. I'm also pretty sure of that, I was just curious in case you had some data on it so I could take a peek and get an even better approximation of the truth. :-)
+BRITURK That's the ticket. And, since you obviously have a computer, or at least access to one, you are likely suffering far less than most people even today. I too have had problems with depression (mostly due to ADD), but I have never allowed myself to slip into believing that my life was really bad. You still have to deal with the psychological, neurological, and emotional drag on your existence that is depression, but your mind can overcome it if you do not succumb to believing that your life really is bad. At least in my case, climbing out of the depths emotionally is much easier when you know (intellectually) that the actual "depths" you are in are about one inch deep, no matter how they feel.
Of course we aren't grateful of our status, how could we? If we were such creatures, to be easily satisfied, to not ask how we could improve something, we wouldn't be where we are. Being satisfied means standind still. Being satisfied means the end of progress. I am grateful that we are never satisfied, because we can always do better. If we were such creatures, to be truly satisfied, we would've been satisfied with the locomotive, we would've been satisfied with horse carriages, we would've been satisfied with living in caves. GO! Be unhappy! Be unsatisfied! If you were, you might as well be dead.
+Classix There needs to be a balance. Appreciating what one has achieved, while still striving for improvement. One should not merely see one of the two, but both.
Fascinating, I would never guess that thi channel would turn out to be so interesting and deep, from what seemed just jokes irony and worthy parody of the abrahamic foolish tales, turned out this channel is quite enlightening and instructive, what a gem keep up the good work
This is soooooo true. We have never had it so good yet people would willingly throw it all away for a handful of worthless dollars. There are people that would burn this world to ash just so long as they could stand upon it and say they rule.
Thank You for opening my eyes im grateful beyond words this wisdom could have been obtained through years and even decades of my life but in just 1 video I feel wiser beyond my years TY.
Don't be silly, the world is worse off in 2016 than at any time in history, that's how you can tell we're living in the end times. I saw it on a billboard, so it must be true.
most people in the first world, even the working class, have it better off than a king would've had it 700 years ago. At least (most) average people have drinkable water and a working toilet, eh?
thewanderandhiscomp Y'know, nobody would get upset if a woman tried to negotiate for a higher salary... But statistics show that doesn't happen as much as men doing the same.
You're right - the world is getting largely better - more tolerance, more knowledge, more communication, more opportunities, better science and healthcare.... Less racism and sexism, more acceptance of LGBT people, less violence etc. But people do focus a bit too much on the negatives, and it's true it's partly down to the perceptions we get from the media, and also shortsightedness and lack of historical perspective.
+Liv Jackson True, people today (or at least in the internet) see a threat to their basis of existence and the end of the world in every small crisis or in minimal societal tensions, small in comparison to the events of the last centuries of human history. I have the feeling some people are just addicted to the "the end is near" feeling.
Damn guy, you actually sound spiritual, even religious (without the obnoxious narrowmindedness of sectarianism). In a good way, making us appreciate all the good things of modern life! I'm proud of you!
Wow. NEVER have witnessed so much truth and so clearly been shown the problems of today, and yet how amazingly well off we all are. This could be the most important video ever made for TH-cam. I sincerely thank you sir. It has affected me. Although it only hammered home what I already knew to be true. But you gave it images and words that were wondrous. We have a long way to go. I fear we will lose the earth before we learn. Keep it up. I know it takes a lot of effort and I only wish I could afford to be a patreon. I already live a very basic hand to mouth existence. So I thank you. Thank you very much. I will do what I can and point everyone I know to this video and share where I can, although I don't have many friends above a one handful, they are true. Thank you.
+KiLLaKontroL99 He's not making mockeries of something he claims doesn't exist.. he makes mockeries of something YOU don't believe exists... your god lives outside reality, yet you fail to understand that means it doesn't exist inside reality and thus isn't real, doesn't exist... this god of yours is made up in your mind, and there is it most powerfull indeed...
Not going to lie, man, even though I've been binge watching your stuff for like 2 hours now 6 minutes into this video it truly dawned on me that that was YOUR voice, as someone who has watched you for years I can honestly say that I don't think I noticed until right now just how much your voice acting has improved, I'm talking leaps and bounds man.
This was amazing. Really makes you think. I actually teared up a little. Powerful stuff. Everyone needs to see this. Really puts things in perspective.
I think I agree with what you're trying to convey, though my instinct is to reject anything that can be boiled down to "appreciate what you have," because usually that's a dog whistle for "accept the inequality and bullshit that exists today, and ignore the fact that the person saying this is probably more wealthy and secure than most of the people you know." But I don't think that's where you are coming from, at all.
Is inequality a bad thing in itself? Some people are born beautiful or strong or smart. We are born unequal. Shouldn't we embrace this diversity and reject envy and seek to better ourselves on merit? Some people are fantastically wealthy and I can't imagine what it's like to live their life. Though so long as they didn't get their money from violating the individual rights of others I say good for them. Elon Musk is super rich and I love all the things he's worked on. Bill Gates also does so much good it's amazing! I'm very happy such people exist and have so much money with which to help make the world better. What do you think?
+The Ⓥeg Bro NYC is one of the safest large cities in the world, but I admit it that it still looks like garbage. In the 80s it was ghetto (thanks Reaganomics)!
If I'm feeling unhappy about not having enough money, I remind myself that I live better than royalty used to. Better than the richest people in the world would have lived hundreds of years ago. Fresh water on demand, plumbing, light at the flick of a switch, heat and air whenever I want them, refrigerated food, on and on.
Even though that sounds great it can never really work, you can never be truly grateful for what you have. The best way is too accept that ungratefulness, too own it, and to use it too fuel achievements goals and milestones. It's OK to want more it's in your nature. It's not evil its an evolutionary instinct. Its better than wallowing in guilt and thinking that makes you more moral somehow. Even though you neglect the flowers in your own backgarden.
There is importance in acknowledging your privilege and luxury, but turning it into a self-guilt-trip doesn't help. It just makes you feel bad about having a good life. Turning your dissatisfaction into dissatisfaction you feel bad having about won't move you towards happiness. Appreciate what you have, of course, but let it be just that: appreciation. Not a way to beat yourself down or invalidate your troubles. Struggling isn't a contest! To want is natural and can be healthy!
This video was so much work, but I think it's one of my best, so I believe my efforts were worthwhile.

Rewatching this, I'm reminded of a thought I had while playing Dragon Age: Inquisition:
"I love playing video games, because I get to pretend that my life matters."
Your life matters beyond video games friend. Even the ants life matters. Make it what you can the best you can.
@@jackeilhigh agreed
Man, you really outdo yourself with each new video.

My favorite part: We were so envious, so narcissistic. The beneficiaries, the selfies; obsessed with seeing ourselves in everything. The world was our mirror. Rarely could we even take a picture of a beautiful place any more - unless we were standing in front of it. Each of us turned into a politician, with insincere words carefully crafted, measured, and shared to appeal to as many like minded people as possible.

"Together we stand, united we fall" how true indeed and with such a safe world now people turn on each other because they don't bother to understand one another.
@@DowntownHustla210 For a second I thought I was losing my mind and misremembered the quote.

This video is unspeakably powerful and beautiful with its message.
Being unsatisfied with the status quo is the very thing that advanced our world to it's present state. Progress doesn't come from people who are satisfied with what they have. Change is always dangerous but the alternative is stagnation.
Flowing water may be dangerous to drink, but long stagnant water always kills.
Jackpot! Was gonna say the exact same thing

+Frank Atwood You've never competed have you? Not how it works.
El Toro Who hasn't competed?
That is exactly how it works. If you ever compare yourself to others, you are giving yourself an excuse to stop once you beat them.
Never stop improving. If you make the gold medal, then beat the record. If you beat the record...beat it again. THAT is true competition - when you compete against the one man (or woman) that has no equal...yourself.
+ravemastaj : Keep trying to beat yourself until you hurt yourself. Yep, sounds smart. First place is good enough, no need to risk your health.

The animation is beautiful.
Great video. Well worth the effort and time needed to create it.
Things are probably more complicated than that but it's a good introspective for humanity overall.

Agreed, this is one of your best videos. It's deep as hell.
Astonishing and depressing as hell! I was actually in a good mood until I realized that we are the very singularity we fear.

MadBrainBox Exactly
+MadBrainBox do you have a citation for that? As far as I know, we've never determined if Cromagnon and Neanderthals fought or if we just outperformed them.
Magnus Bergmark
I based that on older data.
+BRITURK
That's the ticket.
DarkMatter, bud. This is brilliant.
This may be the best video you’ve ever made. I love your serious stuff.
+Classix The point is that you should not be pessimistic, he says nothing bad about trying to improve.
+Classix There needs to be a balance. Appreciating what one has achieved, while still striving for improvement.
One should not merely see one of the two, but both.
+Classix Well said.
+vOddy75 well said
+vOddy75 hear hear.
DankMatter6969
Lol
I wonder how many readers get the 6969 reference.
I don't actually get the "Dank" part.
+psikogeek
Probably 93% or so. It's kind of common knowledge. So is dank.
Oliver Holm
Thank. Please tell me what the dank refers to.
psikogeek
It's a positive adjective, used in MLG parodies and memes.
When I saw the title, I thought this would be related to the Drunken Peasants
Drunken Console Gamers?
+The Trust
Drunken peasants? No they're a podcast.
+arbitor365
Drunken Peasants = Paper Cut.
DarkMatter 2525 = Shotgun Blast.
+The Trust the Drunken Peasants podcast
Darkmatter should go on their show
Fascinating, I would never guess that thi channel would turn out to be so interesting and deep, from what seemed just jokes irony and worthy parody of the abrahamic foolish tales, turned out this channel is quite enlightening and instructive, what a gem keep up the good work
This is soooooo true. We have never had it so good yet people would willingly throw it all away for a handful of worthless dollars. There are people that would burn this world to ash just so long as they could stand upon it and say they rule.
Is there anything wrong with that ?
+*CONOR McGLORIOUS* Demonstrably so... It goes against every widely accepted code of ethics
Anthony Marsdon There won't be rules and codes when the whole world burn to the ground.
+*CONOR McGLORIOUS* there won't be humans either
gninja92 Exactly, so who give a fuck ?
“The last of my kind, who remembers the Old World.”
Ghosts of the olden days
And so ends the story of the Vault Dweller.
+GlitchyShadow13 Which I'm glad about. With so many annoyances and dangers put aside, we can work on much grander things.
True
Yup
+GlitchyShadow13 Although, to be fair, medieval kings probably caused more havoc than security
thewanderandhiscomp Y'know, nobody would get upset if a woman tried to negotiate for a higher salary... But statistics show that doesn't happen as much as men doing the same.
you should write a book about this scenario
Thyrne
It'll be a rather short one if he writes it.
Read 'The Road'.
It's bloody heartbreaking man.
@@kinhamid9665 Who is the author of that book?
By the Waters of Babylon exists
I return again, my life changed when I saw this and part 6. I remember the exact place I was when I first viewed this, a forever altered mind.
Probably your most powerful work to date. The level of animation is equally stunning.
+Stefan if you think that, you missed the point. You might want to think harder about the video. Try not thinking about yourself for 5 min.
+Danny Foster Yes, I expect so
+Liv Jackson True, people today (or at least in the internet) see a threat to their basis of existence and the end of the world in every small crisis or in minimal societal tensions, small in comparison to the events of the last centuries of human history. I have the feeling some people are just addicted to the "the end is near" feeling.
"We turned the cameras from the world, to ourselves".
That line alone is brilliant and a very accurate picture of our modern culture.
Holy flip this video is amazing and hits all sorts of emotions during this pandemic
Excellent. As one of your Christian subscribers, I wish more Christians watched your this as well as the rest of your content.
+One Last True Knight
he's not the only one and probably the reason is because it's really entertaining. that's why I watch him
+One Last True Knight my friend, there are many theists who watch his videos. it's entertaining to see what you guys think
+One Last True Knight More to the point, how can you watch Darkmatter videos and still be a Christian?
+inphanta Cognitive dissonance. But don't hate our Christian bro's they're our best defense against the rampaging beast of Islam.
+Red Floyd Your ignorance is only surpassed by your stupidity.
Well worth the wait, and awesome message that needs to get out there.
You really outdone yourself with this artwork.
11:22 The Religious man is dapping? I... I have no words.

Right. I need my lingerie to be nice and ready.
not just every politician, but every person needs to see this...
Why did the people that were with him vanish? This video is deep.
+Roxy Lamour They probably died...
i think they were just hallucinations
+Roxy Lamour starvation, disease, wolves, or hallucinations.
Thank you.
DarkMatter2525 for President!!
+Mario Stinger ??
+KiLLaKontroL99
It seems you didn't understand this video at all, although this video is especially for people like you are.
IUIC brother the truth black isreal
Dark matter is black right?
Possibly the greatest video on TH-cam
+1, came here to say this.
I think I agree with what you're trying to convey, though my instinct is to reject anything that can be boiled down to "appreciate what you have," because usually that's a dog whistle for "accept the inequality and bullshit that exists today, and ignore the fact that the person saying this is probably more wealthy and secure than most of the people you know."
But I don't think that's where you are coming from, at all.
New York looks a lot like modern day Detroit
+The Ⓥeg Bro NYC is one of the safest large cities in the world, but I admit it that it still looks like garbage. In the 80s it was ghetto (thanks Reaganomics)!
If I'm feeling unhappy about not having enough money, I remind myself that I live better than royalty used to. Better than the richest people in the world would have lived hundreds of years ago. Fresh water on demand, plumbing, light at the flick of a switch, heat and air whenever I want them, refrigerated food, on and on.
It's okay to want more, that's why we are able to have all of these luxuries in the first place
@@azuriiarts2353 I know it's human nature to want more, but I still feel guilty about it. Like I'm being ungrateful for what I already have
These things that make our lives easy also take the meaning away from it.
