Thank you. Highlights of this historic series have been hard to find. To beat Australia in Australia you have to be a class act. This was a good disciplined English side that has not been bettered since.
Just me on my own in a hut with a radio listening to TMS whilst on night shifts as a security guard. Almost every day of every test amazingly coincided with a 12 hour shift and I barely missed a ball. Getting paid whilst listening to England smash the Aussies in their own backyard was the highlight of my 17 years sitting on my backside for a living. Being a lifelong Essex supporter made it all the sweeter - Cookie was an absolute run machine in that series, scoring over 750 runs (at 127 average) and causing forty thousand Aussies to leave Sydney and Melbourne five hours early. Cheers for the upload 🏏
@@mkrbrtsn1 Yes. Used to go out and listen wrapped up sitting down by a stream occasionally. You could almost feel the warmth coming out of the radio from the buzz of the crowd. Made quite the contrast to the often frosty starry landscape I was seeing at the same time.
The Aussies were so worried about Swann they made their pitches more Green but they didn't consider Jimmy Anderson! (and Chris Tremlett from 3rd test onwards.)

@@coventryboy68 Aw, jealous? You must have a massive man-crush on him then. May I suggest an inflatable Warnie doll? Comes with a puncture repair outfit. One for every little prick 🤣
They picked him almost entirely because KP struggled with left arm spin at the time, forgetting about the rest of the batting line up. Not sure about other options, fairly sure Nathan Hauritz was still available but that's about it.
They dropped Lyon for Doherty, apparently at Ponting's behest. From what I hear, Lyon and Ponting were at loggerheads at the time over the line/tactics the spinners should be using.
Lyon didn’t debut until the series after the ashes in Sri Lanka 2011. Coming into the series Hauritz was the incumbent however Doherty had a good odi series prior to the ashes which influenced the selectors, along with Ponting not having faith in Hauritz’s ability to bowl sides out. After this match Doherty specialised in odi and T20 cricket for the Aussies but was never a real wicket taking force because of the fact he literally couldn’t spin a ball if he’s life depended on it😂
@@damonjones7369 Yes, my mistake, it was Hauritz who was dropped for Doherty first time round. I was thinking of when Lyon was dropped for him in India in 2013.
Anyone able to shed any light on why Tony Grieg has such a downer on Swann? "For once Swann manages to get his length right." "The so called best spinner in the world...." the ball after. He's really not a fan!

They'd been so reliant on Warne and McGrath for so long. Took them a while to adjust

Did the Aussies really have no better spinner to call on than Xavier Doherty? In all first-class cricket, his wickets cost him more than 48 a piece!
They picked him almost entirely because KP struggled with left arm spin at the time, forgetting about the rest of the batting line up. Not sure about other options, fairly sure Nathan Hauritz was still available but that's about it.
