I imagine if we could see the aftermath of the movie, the situation isn't going to get better for the women. They still continue to follow the patriarchy, tradition still remains, and only mulan gets the benefit of being treated as an equal to men because people see her as a special case (because in the movie, she is).
Meanwhile when i watched the 1998 version, i could see the townspeople looking at mulan and say "see mulan over there? She was just an average girl. If you set your mind and heart to something, you can be just like her."

The cartoon Mulan (despite the faults that people found later) still gives a wonderful empowering message even after all these years. You can also feel the love and passion of the creators and everyone involved through it.
The remake, (even though they keep denying it's a remake and more of a historically accurate Mulan movie) I'll still call a remake because they relied on the nostalgia and the loves & success for the cartoon version to create hype and draw in audiences. The remake barely has an empowering message (despite how much they want to convince people). The movie is basically saying you're born with it or you're nothing.
The actress too, how is it that an animated cartoon is more expressive and easier to empathize with than an actual human actor?
And there there are issues of kissing CCP's posterior and supporting human discrimination and police brutality.
'She lives in China, she has to show support or her family will be in danger' excuse is such bullsh**. She could just stay silence. Nobody is forcing her to choose a side, she willingly does it herself.

"We don't tend to break into song when we go to war."
Jokes aside, that's actually horrifically untrue. Battle songs not only have a strong presence in virtually every recorded culture throughout history, but as someone who was in the army for 5 years as a combat engineer and deployed to Afghanistan, I can tell you thay we still sing on mission. My platoon could have sang Bohemian Rhapsody competitively we did it so often on mission over the radios.
You want to make it a more realistic story, then fine. I'm certain there are cool, hsitorical chinese war chants and battle songs you could have used in the movie instead.

Even though Mushu is technically a magical creature, pretty much everything in the '98 film could have happened normally without him there. A letter from the front, the cannons setting on fire in transit, Mulan trying to act manly, etc. He doesn't affect the world around him to a high degree. Making a main character and antagonist character have superhero/magic powers does, though.

      @BingDwenDwen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

there were so many things wrong in the 1998 animated Mulan version
      - First of all Mulan cut her hair right before she left to join the Army. In ancient china it was uncivilized to cut your hair short, thats why all the ancient chinese men have long hair.
-Second, Mulan was trained by her father as a little girl. the historic mulan was skilled in martial art even before she went to the army. she was trained by her father when she was young. mulan didn't took his father place if she didn't knew she could do it, she had the confidence to do it. the disney animated version just whitewashed this fact. sad fact is that western audiences are not comfortable with strong women, they can't handle it. disney just made mulan weak to begin with to create underdog sympathy.
Why should you downplay someone ability just because she is a woman. All women need to be weak first to be appreciated? That is the stereotype we are holding on to. We are always surprised when a woman is more capable than a male equivalent. The message of the movie is saying, that is wrong!
      - Third, the song "I'll make a man out of you" is very sexist. Why would an chinese commander say I'll make a man out of you when the soldiers were already men? I know its a wink at Mulan being a woman, but the song didn't age well. Nowadays both men and woman can join the army. Image your drill sergeant tells you that he want to make a man out of you, while you are a woman, cringe!
      - Fourth, historically Shang Li didnt exist. And it is very sexist stereotyping for Mulan fall in love with her superior, thats so cringe I don't know why you support that, its morally not even sound. Honghei is historically seen more accurate as Mulan love interest, and its more logical because he was a fellow soldier and they spent more time witch each other, than you would normally with your commander or drill sergeant.

In traditional myth and stories, you have to practice for years before developing an affinity for Chi and becoming good at it. In addition, having Chi isn't something to be ashamed of or to be hidden, it a mark of a great figher. In many chinese movies and shows, males and females alike are martial artists. Just to say it plainly - no, women aren't as strong as men, at least not physically. That's why for ages men went to war and women stayed behind. No patriarchy, no oppression, just common sense. I liked original "Mulan" for this specific reason, not because she was "just as strong" as her male companions but because she was able to use her wits for common good when everything else failed. She grew as a character throughout the entire movie and at the end she was, in my opinion, a true heroine. New "Mulan" sends the same message to women as "Black Panther" sent to black folks - you don't need to make yourself better as a person and overcome life challenges to accomplish your goals, some magic BS like "Chi power" or "Vibranium" will do that for you.

Pushing politics down of your viewers throats or blatant racism are definitely more serious than that.

It's also a much more emotional moment, since it's the soldiers realizing for the first time what war actually means. They sing, joke around and imagine becoming heroes and getting their perfect women, but then the music stops when they see the destruction the war has caused. In just one moment both the characters and the audience see what's really at stake, in the disconnect between the happy song and the destroyed village. It's one of my favourite scenes from the movie and it perfectly shows the real emotions that many soldiers throughout history must have felt when they were confronted with the horrors of war for the first time. All warrior cultures had war songs featuring prominently, and warriors from most of these cultures were expected to be accomplished dancers as well, (cossacks, maori, samurai, norman knights...) Those people who wrote this piece of crap "cinema" have no conception whatsoever of reality. By "realistic" they mean something that might conform to their comfortable first world existence where high drama comes from not finding a parking spot and then throwing a tantrum or going off to mope. “We don’t tend to break into song when we go to war” except we do? Songs during war times are very common and very important, they’ve been around since war was a thing. Marches and chants helped raise the spirits of soldiers and motivated them, saying songs during war times and during battles aren’t a thing is just plain wrong. Lots of armies throughout history had bands playing during training, before battle and sometimes even during battle to raise moral. In the original mulan a girl worth fighting for is an excellent song bc it shows the mindset of soldiers, how they fantasised about how great life would be back home once they won, which motivated them to keep fighting. The song is lighthearted and is cut abruptly as we see the devastation of the town making for an amazing and heart wrenching transition, juxtaposing the emotions of both scenes and making the effect of the destroyed village so much more impactful. It’s not only accurate but it fits with the story and makes it so much more effective

Actually, by taking out “A Girl Worth Fighting For” they are arguably making the film less realistic. That song is derivative of war chants that most armies use when marching to keep themselves occupied. An equivalent could be “I Don’t Know What I’ve Been Told” which is a musical chant used by the U.S. Marine. It is less likely that the army walks for miles without doing any chants then singing chants up until they need to get ready for battle

Some characters can resist the change and become humans with super powers that are extremely difficult to harm. They heal almost instantously and can come back from death among other things.
Anyway, there's a moment where one of these superhuman characters that resisted giving in to monster-hood, is being shot at and you see a bullet go into their neck. Almost immediately, they shoot the bullet out of their neck in the direction of the shooter, with the same speed of a gun lol. It's amazing.

I can't relate to Chinese culture because I'm not Chinese and other than a few Chinese friends, I have no place to comment on it historically. But I can comment on other efforts like the Beauty and the Beast remake supposedly being "more historically authentic" or something... (yeah, I know wilting roses that curse everyone to eternal damnation was really a big thing in those days...) and no, it wasn't. It was a live action cartoon, essentially. Admit what it is.
Culturally and historic authenticity: you either go for it and go all the way (at least make an honest effort and keep liberties to a minimum) or just don't bother, make a fun film and be completely unapologetic about it. Both these options are fine! But if you're going to claim a "more culturally authentic" and then it isn't, you're going to come off as just lazy. If you go the route of not even bothering, and just borrowing a cultural look, you'll be accused of being culturally insensitive, of course, but all the sane people will have fun with it.

To illustrate the difference, Let's say that a hypothetical episode of Star Trek was about a gay wedding, something Roddenberry wanted to add in but didn't get the option to.
The episode starts with Ensign Dikembe talking to the captain while they eat together in the mess hall, about how he's planning to take leave when they dock on a nearby planet, because his fiance lives on that planet and wants to have a traditional wedding in his culture. Dikembe also has some traditional wedding items from his home nation on Earth, Kenya, and this wedding could be the first time these two cultures collided.
Nobody on the ship has any misgivings about the ensign marrying another man, and one who isn't human to boot. Everything being discussed about the upcoming wedding is talked about positively. The word gay is never once said, it's just called a wedding. Similarly, nothing is brought up about his race, nor his nationality, nor his husband's
A conflict of some sort arises, naturally, and the crew have to take care of it. The conflict is not someone trying to prevent the wedding because they think of it as wrong. No one blames Ensign Dikembe or his groom-to-be for the problem, and Dikembe works just as hard as the rest of the crew to solve the issue, because even with everything happening, he still tales his job extremely seriously.
Now ask yourself: would the new Star Trek, or in fact any show being made these days, behave the same way about these subjects?

The thing about the avalanche here, in this movie this strategy only works due to the enemy being complete and utter idiots and firing a catapult at a friggin mountain. In the original, it was entirely mulan being clever that triggered this, here she pretty much just prays that the enemy loses all of their brain cells and triggers an avalanche themselves...because that sure does portray them as a credible threat that should be taken seriously now doesn't it?

      - how did she carry all those helmets?
      - how did she *collect* all those helmets so fast, without being seen?
      - how is she firing accurate arrows that fast?
      - ain't it lucky that they didn't just send a few soldiers to charge the ridge instead of turning their back to the other, clearly larger force?

There are some great Twitter feeds on the subject by people who understand it much better but I will try to summarize to the best of my abilities (Xiran, a historian, even made a youtube channel just because her tweets blasting mulan on every level)
First off, women who did "magic" weren't outcasted, women who used magic to commit wrong doing were.
Another thing is qi (chi) is used as to explain magic, but qi isn't magic? It's energy that binds the universe together, it's why in wuxia novels there's a lot of people who eat the qi of others to gain more energy or refuse to eat qi and find ways to peacefully consume qi. It's also where the yin and yang concept comes from, though it's such a small part of the overall thing. Tai chi, acupuncture, traditional chinese medicine is also a part of this as well, the idea of achieving balance by opening channels. This is generally shown in wuxia with the walking on walls. Everyone can do it (in wuxia novels, not irl, it's a fantastical intepretation of real life which is very common in chinese stuff, mulan is a legend based on potentially historical events, same goes for most operas and myths with few exceptions) it's not a special gift, it requires training to achieve.
On the other hand, the "witch" in the movie has more in common with what I can only describe in english as "demons" but animal spirits can gain supernatural abilities, can depending on how powerful can possess humans or even shapeshift as our villian witch. Living humans can't do that, but the dead/gods can. And this is just a SUMMARY. It's a fun read/watch, I really recommend a deeper dive with people who know better.
Basically the reason the film makes no sense is due to bad writing and taking western concepts about magic and putting it into a chinese setting. It's just all bad.

@@jaykingplays You are correct about qi. The stereotypical master in wuxia novels is the wizened old hermit living in the mountains, not some kid. The only time a kid has powerful neigong is if they picked up a super secret powerful martial arts manual some super powerful old person or genius left behind. Or they chanced upon some rare/mystical fox/toad/snake/turtle/etc and it gave them a boost of sorts. Getting stuff by fluke is common in wuxia novels, but being born with powerful qi or equivalent is not a thing in wuxia novels. Even someone born with superior intellect still has to work to hone their skills, it just takes them less time.
I don't find the witch problematic at all. She works with the nomads/Mongols/non-Han Chinese. Her outfit seems to fit someone who isn't Han Chinese. I know the costumes in this movie is pretty shit and historically inaccurate, but I can see her as a witch doctor or shaman of sorts from the nomadic tribes. And her shapeshifting could just be Disney making things more fantastical. She doesn't have to be a "yao", which is what you seem to be describing.

Cartoon Mulan: A young teen girl trying to make it in her society. She's smart, resourceful, but not magic. She has fears, likes, difficulties and triumphs.
She is only discovered as a female hiding in the army after saving her commanding officers and many of the other soldiers lives. She is embarrassed and scared because she knows what this means. She also felt bad about deceiving everyone who had then become her friends.
Life action Mulan: In the first 3 minutes of the movie does crouching tiger hidden dragon moves that would make Jackie Chan full of confusion. She's a good fighter not because of practice and determination, but because chi which is basically magic.
She is discovered when she just says "f**k it" and takes down her hair to fight in a battle (very helpful to have your hair in your face while swords are coming at you) and doesn't care if they kill her for it. Is also very rude and uncomfortable around everyone.
The cartoon one is about as female empowerment as you can get, because it didn't treat Mulan as special because girl, but because of her determination in a world that didn't treat women the same as men. She never tried to over push "females are human too" but intsead proved it through her actions and ingenuity.
While the cartoon one has it's flaws, it's a million times better than the live action. Both as the story of the Chinese legend and as a movie in it's own right. The characters are memorable, better written, empathetic. The art style brought so much more respect to Chinese culture and was a lovely tribute to an old legend.
The new movie doesn't even feel Chinese. It just feels like a vaguely east Asian badly done martial arts fighting movie with excessive magic elements thrown in.
Thing is, it's apart of various cultures to believe ancestors watch over them and that they have things like guardian animals. Those elements didn't make it just more fun for kids, they also were adding to the lore and beliefs of that culture.
The new movie is an insult to the legend of Mulan and to the art of film making. This is not even to mention the lead actress being a shill for the CCP and it's ilk.
There was no reason for this film to be made.
It wasn't even an argument of representation by getting Chinese actors to play Chinese characters. The original voice actors for most of the main characters in the cartoon Mulan were Chinese already.
The new Mulan was pointless and offensive on so many accounts.

She goes off and tries to be something she isn't for her father's sake, but, at the end of it all, her father LOVES Mulan for who she is even if she hasn't quite got that figured out yet.
It's pure unconditional love for your child, even if the world doesn't approve of the fact that child isn't living up to the expectations of that world.

If I want to watch these movies, I'll stick with the animated originals. At least their animated movies used actual voice actors for major supporting roles from time to time (e.g. Paul Winchell, Frank Welker, and David Ogden Stiers).

    • @HoloFizz

There's just too many idiots out there that will pay for garbage, and still think it's good. Disney is a large company, the only way to teach them is like you would teach a dog; through positive reinforcement vs negative reinforcement. So they'll keep pumping out this crap for as long as it gets them a profit. Only after multiple losses will they stop and reconsider what they're doing. But since people still buy garbage... It won't happen, at least not for a long time.

My comment was highlighting the fact that you seem to think people are idiots for the simple reason they like something you don't. Just another example of how the human race are selfish and pathetic cry baby's. Besides...even though us adults love to relive our childhoods through Disney, they always have been and always will be aimed at children. That's their main target audience.

The one line from the 1998 Mulan that always stuck out to me (probably because it was in the trailer) was the line "The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter". It seemed to encompass well part of the core message of the film, not just being accepted for who you are, but being valued for being yourself. It's a shame that it seems like they dropped the ball on the live action.

Mulan was supposed to be about her fighting with the men and being equal. That women can also fight and not be seen different, which is why she maintained her cover. Her fighting smart and using her brain when pure muscle wouldnt work (like climbing the pole, setting off fireworks etc..)
Its NOT about superpowers and magic and her being better than the other women and being special 😑 she's supposed to be a normal warrior saving her family

@@snorgonofborkkad Yea, but none of them did have any knowledge of Chinese culture, nor really studied it before (possibly after too) production. They spent a bunch of money to send a costume designer around China to study the historical fashion, when they could have saved money and actually hired a Chinese costume designer who has probably spent years in this field. The mental gymnastics you gotta do to reason why the heck they would hire a crew ignorant to Chinese culture and spend thousands on educating them on a culture many Chinese people know naturally is ridiculous. Also, what happened to giving people of color and minority a chance to tell their stories in hollywood? Honestly, Disney is superficial in their support of minorities in hollywood. I'm not saying minority voices should be prioritized, but if you're going to tell a story from them then yea they should be prioritized in this situation.

It takes brains and adapting to the situation to take down a villain, because once the magic runs out. You're a sitting duck unless you act fast, and Mulan 1998 proved that without magic!
