RJ, I just did this to my mom's old Raleigh (the twist shifters were a no-go with her arthritis). Strangely, the Shimano 3x7 trigger shifters I ordered are acting the opposite way they should. When I push the right thumb button, the derailleur knocks the chain down to the small cog, and when I pull the trigger it climbs to the larger cogs. What on Earth is going on here?
Rear derailleur is an MR40 "megarange", whatever that means.

Last night I spent 4 hours trying to figure out why my sons bicycle won't shift into 6th and 7th gear. Looked up all kinds of adjustment videos and worked on the bike only to finally give up and realize it needs new shifters and a new derailer. Cause it was a little bent, but I bent it so much more trying to fix it. So I got new parts on Amazon and this video is exactly what I need. Thank you.

Thank you very much! I have a Schwinn Ranger that I got practically new out of someone’s trash. It cost me NOTHING to get it into a rideable state. I’ve had it for years, but only recently started really riding. The grip shifters (particularly the front derailleur) are “just okay” and I’m looking to make an upgrade. This video was perfect! Thank you again!

Very helpful video. I was just thinking of swapping the handlebar on my road bike from drop bar to a flat bar, which would also require changing the shifters+brake levers. This looks like something I could probably do myself, instead of spending a ton of money for a mechanic to do it.

idk really, i stopped at the local bike shop and talked about adding more gears to my rear hub, and going w thumb shifters... i can NOT stand grip shift, its such crap all together, i hate how i can't use my whole grip while riding!
if i had to guess id say maybe the cables aren't tight, or maybe too tight, or maybe the derailleur needs some adjustment.... but I'm no bike mechanic at all. so i can't really say whats wrong w it!! sorry friend! support ur local bike shop, they will be there when u need them!! HAHA

Thank you for putting these up. I hadn't worked on a bike in about sixty years; I was about 16 last time, and both my shifters went--poof--on the same day. Both of them just popped open. I was amazed. It was like the poem, "The Wonderful One-Horse Shay". They were very old and very used. I ordered replacements and waited three weeks and then I saw your instructions on this video and another one and no problem. Thanks again.

Great video. I like how you explain everything as you go along. I have never been able to get shifters to work on the first try like that, but you obviously have a LOT more experience on this type of thing than I do. I mostly just ride my bike and take it to the shop when it needs new cables. I've never converted grip shifters to trigger, but I'd like to. I really don't like grip shifters. Trigger shifters are SO much better. Why did they ever invent twist grip shifters? Seems like something that was really not needed, but they sure are used on a lot of bikes from very inexpensive to my $4000+ recumbent.

Good to know. The grip shifters are the bane of my existence. I have some sort of mental deficit that makes changing gears always exactly backwards and I am just dealing with a rear. Being cheap (and lazy) I'll wait until they mechanical fail to change them. They do seem to be perfect and functioning as designed for a year now....yeah, it's a mixed bag.

Good vid. I just bought out of storage & revamped my old road bike to a new riding position ( brought home 3 large bags of groceries with it today even though the wind chill was below freezing! ) and the frame shifters are so low that this might be a good practical upgrade. I have trigger shifters on two of my mtn bikes and one mtb with grip shifters. ( the grip shifter failed the quickest, btw ) I never thought about it but the parts appear very inexpensive. I love your vids where you take things apart and show us what is in them because I often do not have the time to look. When you show me then I can order parts and when they get here I have minimal down time and can affect the repair and/or upgrade the quickest. I was impressed you going into a 3 speed hub, also. You have a mind like my own -- fun to know how everything works! BTW have you ever used one of those 3 speed conversion kits? Or the 2 speed automix hub? I was thinking of doing that to an old 1 speed cruiser to give it more quicker starts from lights (and when carrying/hauling heavy loads) Also, any plans to review what trailer set up is the best bang for one's buck? ( I saw a great one the other day where the vending machine fellow was refilling the machine and I realized the connection to the bike, unlike all the plastic sh*t out there, was comprised of two solid _steel_ U joints just like in a CAR! Very well built but I forget the name ) If I have time one night I might try to google it up. Gotta sleep. Thanks for all your good vids RJ!

      RJ The Bike Guy
The 2 speed automatix hub is popular with commuters going downtown because they can stick with a fixie and have a second gear to help in the long slow mild hills we have here but still have the reliability without needing a derailluer that vandals can mess with. Either this:
      www.jensonusa.com/!3kCsyzd4hVW!y1t3UlH5sg!/SRAM-Automatic-2-SPEED-Hub-Coaster-Brake
or the one that you kick it back and it switches gears. ( I love the 96 speed bike sheldon brown had made just because he could. My newest bike, a titanium fly fantom motobecane mtb 29er, has 30 speeds. Crazy. )
Trailers are VERY popular here in MN. Plenty of people even repurpose child trailers for groceries or even carrying their dog. I love the beauty of Mn Bike culture. But that plastic connection almost always fails sooner or later. I like to buy and use reliable things.

Hello RJ how are you doing my name is Oronde nice to meet you that's incredible work on installing your own shifters to your bike I have a round shifter grip on my bike and the cable to the rear part of the wheel whether the rella is is little chewed up and I can't help but to wonder how to replace the cable that leads from the grip shifter to the handlebars take the chewed-up bag cable out to replace it with a new cable so how do you go about taking the housing of the round grip shifter off the handlebars to replace the chewed-up cable with a new cable.

It varies by model. I have a bunch of videos showing how to replace the cables in different models of shifters. Look through my video list.

Hi, RJ. This was extremely helpful - Thanks! What kind of stand were you using?

      A discarded indoor bike trainer.

@@RJTheBikeGuy I see. I have an old trainer as well that I would like to use as a stand. Problem is that my bike has a thru axle that is not comparable with the trainer :(

@@stoicchris I am not sure what people with thru axles do to use trainers. I use the trainer to hold the bike when I working on handle bars and stuff. It puts the bike lower and better for videoing.

Do you need to cut all the cables or is it alright to reuse them?
