No question, it was really on it's way to becoming the greatest TV drama ever. The crazy thing is that many people still put it in the top 5 or top 10 and it was cancelled after only 3 seasons. The movie was really disappointing but that was to be expected. Each episode was 1hour and you can't just make a movie of 90-120 minutes and rap up the whole series. Too much in the movie didn't feel right. It was still fun because I got very nostalgic and again realized how good the series is.
I think it just gave the endings that were missing after another brutal cancellation. I always thought the Hearst communications put pressure on to push the cancellation. Obviously Hearst didn't come out looking good. His family went on to be big in media. Published Cosmopolitan. They company still has huge influence today. Hearst's attitude to the press was explored well in the series. The film ended with media exposure again for Hearst. And Bullock pulling his ear again.
@nospoon4799 That makes sense. I've read that 35 - 40 minutes of the movie was cut before the premiere. I'm still looking for Milch's Deadwood finale, not that botched disjointed mess that was shown on HBO.
Deadwood is the best television series ever produced. We as Americans pay the highest price for its cancellation, but the world paid along with it. It should've been four seasons. The first three are perfect.
well, olyphant gave us Justified not so long after, and this was a hell of a show, and his role well was pretty much the same as in deadwood, except in modern time
Justified is probably more under rated than Deadwood. Timothy played the character in Justified that I was constantly waiting to come out in Deadwood. In Deadwood he was pussified, in Justified he was perfect. I'll rewatch Justified every time I get the chance. Simply an awesome show and frankly better than Deadwood.
@@TangoNevada i agree 100%. The reason of the pussification of his role in deadwood is probably because they tried to staybas close to the real events as possible. This is inaccurate - I was in Business Affairs at HBO at the time & worked on Deadwood. HBO very much wanted a fourth season of Deadwood - it was Milch (who is an erratic man who struggles with his addictions) - who told HBO he was going to work on John from Cincinnati - he told HBO the 'other' writers could carry on with a fourth season. The reason it came out as an HBO decision was to preserve the relationship with Milch. I was there, I heard it directly from those involved in negotiating the deals - Milch was leaving and HBO felt he was necessary for the project. HBO ate the anger and blame, because that's what studios do.
Deadwood series creator David Milch has said, “I am deeply disappointed by the way things turned out. (HBO) felt like they had to make a choice, and this is how they chose. I know they tried to work it out, and I tried to work it out with them.” It’s been confirmed that HBO offered to greenlight a small six-episode order of the groundbreaking drama but Milch, who has had bad experiences with so-called “short-order renewals,” rejected the offer. “For my part, I did not want to accept a short order. We couldn’t have done the work the way we wanted. I didn’t want to limp home. My old man used to say, ‘Never go anyplace where you’re only tolerated,'” relates Milch. One source has reported that Milch had already plotted the fourth (presumed final) season episodes. Seems at odds with your story.
@@Coalemos - except I was there and talked to the people involved - I know what happened. Milch was allowed to place the blame on HBO - but the network was not willing to give an order for a show that had the creator and real genius of the language (Milch was a former Harvard professor) not fully involved. I know what Milch has said, I remember being furious we at HBO had to shoulder the blame - but Milch had an overall deal with us and to preserve that deal, we had to accept that blame. I'm not there anymore, ao it doesn't matter if I say what actually happened - I even ran into Milch when I was working for another production company and we had a nice chat - I like him - but I know what happened directly from the people involved so believe what you want.
Love that phrase...”shit from shinola”....was much used at our house when growing up...and no one knows what it means anymore...I digress...hated that Deadwood ended the way it did. Was truly beautifully written and spoken and acted. At least got some closure with the movie...could you hate any character more than Hearst? Was he really that much of a jag-off?
I just finished watching this series and was hooked from start to finish. It’s so damn frustrating watching the series finale and knowing there wouldn’t be anything left, because so many of the characters stories were left a mystery. I’m going to watch the movie tomorrow, and hope that they somehow reach a satisfying conclusion for many of the beloved characters. I just don’t know how they’ll do it all in under two hours. Truly a letdown they didn’t just keep the show going for another season, or two.
For a 2004 show, being more or less the year were TV-series really started becoming better than movies (also the year of Lost), the numbers were quite decent indeed. It was actually a hit at the time, and winning awards as well. Comparing it to e.g. Game of Thrones from 2011+ is just silly 😕 Milch wasn't easily controlable for them, so in that sense it was most likely rough getting anywhere with negotiations of any sort. And that definitely lead to Deadwood stopping. Such a huge shame that it never got an actual ending, though (the movie couldn't do it justice, although it was also decent, of course - even though HBO also cut 40 minutes out of that).
i loved that show more than ranch dressing it's not for dummies and there's to many dummies out there to appreciate it it was the game of thrones of the old west and i loved it

John from Cincinnati?!?! Wow. I do appreciate that you guys consistently give fact-based information without too much hype. Glad to still be able to get that on TH-cam.
I slept on this show for a long time but binged every episode + the film last weekend and it's a fucking masterpiece. Rare to see anything with the level of production it had and once its over the void is impossible to fill
A period series like Deadwood or Rome limits the ability of the show to make money through product placement. The contemporary show Entourage was just riddled with products from cars to watches and other high end stuff that a rich young actor would sport. To me, Rome & Deadwood were soooo much better than Entourage. W. Earl Brown is highly underrated. Love that guy.
Great acting, well-written characters, hard-hitting scripts - like many shows, they don’t always last forever even if they’re excellent. I can really see, with all those wonderful actors, how they were in demand elsewhere - especially Ian McShane - what a remarkable actor. They ALL were. I didn’t watch the show - it was WAY too bloody for my tastes - but, my husband was an avid watcher, and I’d listen to the dialogue while it was on. Even just that convinced me it was one of the best acted shows on TV. But, it wasn’t going to be on forever.
Got was the best show ever made. The ending may have been less then what many of us wanted, but the journey was fantastic. I have never had anything on TV other then football that made me talk to the tv like GOT. Deadwood was also great. Ian Mcshane was by far the best actor on it. He did a superb job.
So...the creator of the Deadwood series turned down a 4th season of doing 6 episodes likely an hour each? Wow I'm sorry but that was a stupid move considering they later offered 2 movie specials and then years later we get a watered down movie as a way to tie up the show. Not sure what pisses me off more the show's initial cancellation or the creator turning down a 6 episode FINAL season that would have given far more time to tell the story and wrap up the show.
The audience bears the executives weight around their neck like a f***ing albatross and yet people still ask "Well, why is bent over" and "why can he barely f***ing walk".
Pretty sure Looper (are these Canadians) left out the part where HBO was between Presidents, with an interim lady in charge at the time of these negotiations. Do the Karens at Looper know what we got next, 8 years of David Simon's Treme type garbage.
Eh? Yeah Treme was pretty lame but he did produce and write on The Wire and The Deuce which were good. Everybody also forgets about the Vampire Diaries and True Blood which i thought were terrible but still very popular. Biggest problem that HBO had was all of their money going into GoT and WBs failed movie franchises like the DCEU and new harry potter movies. On top of that the disastrous covid streaming decisions that chased off Nolan and hamstrung movies like Tenet and Dune at the box office. Only thing saving them lately is WB lucking into big profits with Joker and Barbie. They are still ruining HBO with all of the garbage reality shows and documentaries.
Mebbe a adult reboot of Gun smoke, there's a trove of excellent stories on file, lots of tension available with racial, sexual, political and moral collisions of that era.
Have you ever looked up the history of Wild Bill and Deadwood? He was killed a day after Bullock met him there. I agree that his character was great, but just like the Earp's brief appearance, the show was fairly accurate to their real life time together.
The plots were nonsensical. There is such a thing as too much murder; they wrote themselves into a corner and made the entire show one big Mexican standoff.
Milch had a very expensive show that had declining ratings. He refused to submit to a cut back in episodes for the fourth season. It was over from that point.
“John from Cincinnati” was such a letdown. Deadwood was..and still is…one of the best written, best SPOKEN series ever created. The language Milch uses as interpreted by his interaction with the actors is stunning and mesmerizing and lyrical and gorgeous. It’s like the best sort of chocolate candy for my ears and eyes and brain. I love it so!
Are you still holding out hope that Deadwood could somehow return as a series?
I may be biased, but Lead at the pinnacle of the gold rush could be a great series...
Never happen. Would be nice but I doubt it. Especially with Milch being sick. Best show ever.
Not with Al dead. No point.

Went to Sturgis eight yrs in a row and stayed in a house a friend had bought in Lead. Pretty much across a mall with a lrg supermarket and a Burger King. Loved it. Loved it!
Do you think it was the show or the casinos?
I lived in Rapid City! GREATEST PLACE EVER!
The movie was really disappointing but that was to be expected. Each episode was 1hour and you can't just make a movie of 90-120 minutes and rap up the whole series. Too much in the movie didn't feel right. It was still fun because I got very nostalgic and again realized how good the series is.
By the time the movie was shot, Milch had Alzheimer's and was unable to treat the show like he had in the past. That's why it was a disappointment.
Thx for the info. I thought deadwood was absolutely amazing. Mcshane and Oliphant were brilliant. RIP
Deadwood is the best television series ever produced. We as Americans pay the highest price for its cancellation, but the world paid along with it. It should've been four seasons. The first three are perfect.
Milch's perfectionism and spur-of-the-moment rewrites were no doubt the reason the show was so great.
One of my favorite shows of all time
Deadwood was 10 times the show Game of Thrones has ever been. Fight me!
well, olyphant gave us Justified not so long after, and this was a hell of a show, and his role well was pretty much the same as in deadwood, except in modern time
Justified is probably more under rated than Deadwood.
Justified they didn t have that limitation. And yeah, justified is an awesome show, i watched it 4 or 5 times. It's always a pleasure to rewatch it
Olyphant was the only shit part of Deadwood, hes a horrible monotonic actor.
@@heinz5714
You must have watched the wrong person!
Timothy Olyphant is AMAZING and beats out every actor that ever graced the steps of Hollywood! VERY FEW can stand on the TOP scale as Timothy Olyphant does! Those that have reached the same height as Timothy Olyphant, VERY few are still living to stand along his side!
@@MimiJoys horribleeeeee actor
Omg! Whoever's idea it was to add in the Al Swearengen part at @ BRILLIANT!! So perfect!
That's not the story Milch tells. HBO offered a half season and Milch felt it wasn't enough to finish out the story.
I'm not really interested in who was to blame. I was simply disappointed that another one of my favorite TV series was cancelled prematurely.
@@Coalemos
Best advice ever given by a parent! Thank You for THAT!
"Never go anyplace you're only tolerated"!
I shall remember that!
Because HBO didn’t know shit from shinola 15 years ago .....
still don't
Love that phrase...”shit from shinola”....was much used at our house when growing up...and no one knows what it means anymore...I digress...hated that Deadwood ended the way it did. Was truly beautifully written and spoken and acted. At least got some closure with the movie...could you hate any character more than Hearst? Was he really that much of a jag-off?
Claudia Miller excellent points , but I guess closure wasn’t important enough to them . With Powers booths and a few others passing away was bad too
One of my favorite shows of all time. It's a shame it only lasted 3 seasons, but at least it lasted longer than Carnivale.
F this. I’m rewatching it for the 20th time
Me too!!
As am I.
Heng dai!
Heng dai!
Paramount, Warner Bros., NO HANG DAI!
For a 2004 show, being more or less the year were TV-series really started becoming better than movies (also the year of Lost), the numbers were quite decent indeed. It was actually a hit at the time, and winning awards as well.
Comparing it to e.g. Game of Thrones from 2011+ is just silly 😕
Milch wasn't easily controlable for them, so in that sense it was most likely rough getting anywhere with negotiations of any sort. And that definitely lead to Deadwood stopping.
Such a huge shame that it never got an actual ending, though (the movie couldn't do it justice, although it was also decent, of course - even though HBO also cut 40 minutes out of that).
Even though I watched this, twice, I still don’t understand. My wife and I loved this series.
i loved that show more than ranch dressing
it's not for dummies
and there's to many dummies out there to appreciate it
it was the game of thrones of the old west and i loved it
I watched "Deadwood" to revel in the extraordinary dialogue.
I dropped my HBO subscription when they cancelled Deadwood mid plot line. I havent watched a single episode of an HBO product since. I will not give them the chance to disrespect their subscribers like that again.
They built up to a great cliffhanger at the end of the 3rd season, and then canceled the show. That’s when I canceled HBO.
deadwood would never make it past todays censors. Steve would be an instant "cancelled"
If they released Deadwood in 2020, twitter would crash under the strain of a million reees.
Sad, when you consider what what wonderful runs “Hell on Wheels” and “Longmire” had.
That's exactly what I just said. 😭
John from Cincinnati?!?! Wow.
I do appreciate that you guys consistently give fact-based information without too much hype. Glad to still be able to get that on TH-cam.
So they couldn't spare money to make this or Rome but abruptly dropped 300 million on The Pacific in 2011
I slept on this show for a long time but binged every episode + the film last weekend and it's a fucking masterpiece. Rare to see anything with the level of production it had and once its over the void is impossible to fill
Ah... The mid-2000's... Before the stock market recession... Life was good.
An absolute masterpiece was hooked after episode 1
A period series like Deadwood or Rome limits the ability of the show to make money through product placement. The contemporary show Entourage was just riddled with products from cars to watches and other high end stuff that a rich young actor would sport. To me, Rome & Deadwood were soooo much better than Entourage.
W. Earl Brown is highly underrated. Love that guy.
How could anyone NOT love that show?! I'd grab my thesaurus and disappear for an hour on Sunday nights. I so miss it..
It was a spectacular show. Enjoyed every episode thoroughly. Miss it much now!
When I watched the two hour finale I couldn't help but notice how much some of the characters aged, though a few still looked the same.
Yet, still heralded by many as the top HBO series of all time. It is unparalleled to this day. GOT was a farce.
Got was the best show ever made. The ending may have been less then what many of us wanted, but the journey was fantastic. I have never had anything on TV other then football that made me talk to the tv like GOT. Deadwood was also great. Ian Mcshane was by far the best actor on it. He did a superb job.
@@joelaton1062 The acting was shallow and it was basically an adult cartoon.
The Wire was every bit as good, just different, but to say the wire isnt on par with deadwood is just wrong
No other movie compares to deadwood. It was awsome.
The way the movie ended Sucked left the story without a end it was all left unfinished
This was an amazing show
So...the creator of the Deadwood series turned down a 4th season of doing 6 episodes likely an hour each? Wow I'm sorry but that was a stupid move considering they later offered 2 movie specials and then years later we get a watered down movie as a way to tie up the show. Not sure what pisses me off more the show's initial cancellation or the creator turning down a 6 episode FINAL season that would have given far more time to tell the story and wrap up the show.
The audience bears the executives weight around their neck like a f***ing albatross and yet people still ask "Well, why is bent over" and "why can he barely f***ing walk".
So….money. Glad the consumer gets to be disappointed when greed enters the scene.
This show being canceled was among the greatest travesties in our modern world.
The best show on television EVER.
It’s my favorite show still
I've watched it six times and I'm sure I'm going to watch it again.
I don't understand how it cost 4 to 5 million dollars an episode to have two people stand in a room with awesome dialogue for several minutes
This show was just ahead of its time. The amount of kids now in days demanding a REd dead redemption movie and I’m like; “yeah but we have deadwood.”
my all time favorite show, bar none
The series was great,as short as it was. The movie was damn good too!!!
Deadwood was Shakespearean.
Idk how I missed this series all this time. Just watched all 3 seasons and the movie. Was a great show.
Hard to argue a tv series with a stronger set of cast members. So many talented actors and actresses all in one show.
Mebbe a adult reboot of Gun smoke, there's a trove of excellent stories on file, lots of tension available with racial, sexual, political and moral collisions of that era.
Excellent idea.
This show made me laugh, cry, sweat, gag, loathe, love and grieve. Not many writers can summon that kind of magic.
In today’s “woke society” This show would not make it. However it’s kicking ass modern television needs!
They forgot the most important reason: They killed off Wild Bill way too early.
Have you ever looked up the history of Wild Bill and Deadwood? He was killed a day after Bullock met him there. I agree that his character was great, but just like the Earp's brief appearance, the show was fairly accurate to their real life time together.
After Hickok's death, it just wasn't the same.
one of the all time greatest shows. just underneath game of thrones, the wire, the sopranos and breaking bad.
Exactly
Game of thrones come on, OZ is the greatest
What About OZ?

deadwood was a great show smh
...so the American viewing public was to shallow and ignorant to appreciate a Great show...
...ok...I can believe that... :>/
The plots were nonsensical. There is such a thing as too much murder; they wrote themselves into a corner and made the entire show one big Mexican standoff.
I was a faithful viewer of deadwood I didn't enjoy the movie that much a little bit of closers though
Love, Love, Loved the show!!!
Best show
Best writing
There ever was!
@ Yeah 👍 nothing beats Breaking bad but deadwood is pretty good
Milch had a very expensive show that had declining ratings.
I loved this show! At least the movie tied up some loose ends.
