I'm neither American, nor particularly right wing, (I'm from the UK and a centrist) but have to say I am truly moved by the integrity, character and grit shown by the Lincoln Project; breaking with their fellow Republicans to do what is right for America and the world. To even a part-time observer of politics, it's apparent that not just America's political stability is at stake but key elements of the post war world system. Metaphorically speaking, he needs to be mercilessly dispatched. These people are up to the job of strangling the baby tyrant; Democrats seem to get queasy about it.

      Fellow Brit here ...
What else can I say, but to wholeheartedly. We, both America, and Great Britian, have both come a long way since 1945, and in many cases, thanks to many small evolutions, and revolutions, we have managed to get here. Yet, at the same time, there is this sense that something very deep within, is fundamentally broken. In our case, we have Boris Johnson. Though by no means am I Conservative, I hoped for his recovery, had hoped that his close brush with the pandemic, would have changed him to be more empathic, and compassionate. But yet, somehow ...
I belive being pragmatic definitely has its time and place, but, like all tools, must be mastered to use correctly. However, despite the warnings by his medical and scientific advisors, although not as blazingly open as President Trump has been, me thinks that our dear leader, Boris, is following a similar path, and likewise pattern of behaviour ...

When he started ranting about how Dems want to destroy America and take down all the monuments, that was it for me - he is mad and completely Un-American. The way he was sweating, I kept thinking (uncharitably) that I wish he would have a stroke and just go away.
I felt so terrible for all the real, Native Americans who could not stop him from going onto their land for such foolishness. It was a slap in the face but prez bone spurs could not even comprehend it. I felt ashamed to be an American on this, our Independence Day.

_”We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace-business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering._
_They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob._
*Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me-and I welcome their hatred.”*

As an old man, I thought the American people got as far as they could after Dr. Martin Luther King
was assassinated and cities were burning. Every day, I see something humanistic about this new
America that brings tears to my eyes, never thinking I would see this again in my lifetime.

There is little doubt that the political interests of the Klan and the Democratic Party, at least in the early years, intersected. But there is no evidence that it was founded as part of the Democratic Party, or that the party ever even had an official "military arm."
Carole Emberton, associate professor of history at the University at Buffalo, noted that the "party lines of the 1860s/1870s are not the party lines of today."
"Although the names stayed the same, the platforms of the two parties reversed each other in the mid-20th century, due in large part to white ‘Dixiecrats’ flight out of the Democratic Party and into the Republican Party after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964," she said. "By then, the Democratic Party had become the party of ‘reform,’ supporting a variety of ‘liberal’ causes, including civil rights, women’s rights, etc. whereas this had been the banner of the Republican Party in the nineteenth century."

What we need is people to actually know what happens in classrooms around the US, support the teachers and stand against stupid statements such as "our children are educated to hate their histories"-Trump, July 4th, 2020

Not that Trump helped. I believe many Americans feel like you do and teachers appreciate this. I was livid at Trump's 4th of July speech at Rushmore about the lie that children are educated to hate their history. I haven't ever nor do I know a teacher who has not done their best to teach children how to gather facts, research and analyze them, then form information based ideas that are independent of a teacher's own beliefs or opinions. I have seen education evolve in the past 20 years, and I know it will take a while, but I do believe the children of this generation and the children in the upcoming generations will be more thoughtful, more of life long learners seeking growth. I truly do and I believe we will make you and everyone else proud of the thoughtful, aware, well rounded students we are teaching. I have a 15 year old and he is so much more aware of the world and social issues and reasons about them than we did at that age....so I truly believe there is hope for intelligence thought in the children of today. Our generation is creating a better generation and they will do a better job. Sorry for the speech! Lol. But I do wish people could see what's happening in classrooms today, because from kindergarten to graduation, we are teaching children to seek knowledge, reflect and learn from that. Much different from how I was taught. Lol

I guess some people these days think that there were "very fine people" on both sides of that civil war. Read it the way you want to. It says something about you whether you think this speech honors and cherishs the confederate flag waivers that sought to tear us apart and the defenders of slavery. Those people are very much still alive and breathing - today . . .

Sergio DuBois : I disagree with your assumption that Lincoln referred to only Union soldiers. Unlike Trump he sought to unite all the people of United States and viewed the confederates as prodigal sons that should be welcomed back into the family. Find and read his second greatest speech his 2nd inaugural address. After Gettysburg is was clear that eventually the north would win and like Nelson Mandela he wished to avoid the slaughter of the defeated but rather to move forward together. Some wanted to hang every confederate solider as a traitor, but not Lincoln. This is part of why is was such a great president.

The electoral college system reinforces this on a national level. Political TV advertising - illegal in many other countries - forces politicians into the pockets of big special interests, again forcing the debate to move into culture war stuff around taking knees, gun control, abortion, gay rights & a host of other issues that do matter - but fundamentally don't change anything that would threaten the profits of the powerful.
