    Thanks for the video. I have found that watering the plants the night before really makes dividing hostas so much easier. Also moving the rock mulch away from the plant makes it easier also.

    New subscriber from Mobile, Alabama USA I came to your site to get help with my first attempt at dividing hostas. I am an elderly lady and found your manner and your way of speaking very easy to follow. I appreciate that you don't scream like so many young people do. Also, my great grandfather came to the States from Ireland and I enjoy that little tidbit. Great video and I look forward to watching more of them. Best of luck in your new TH-cam venture.

    Great video, so satisfying to get new plants, by dividing those you have already got. Like you, I always have a sharp knife to split herbaceous plants.
    I use home made garlic spray, to keep snails/slugs off Hostas,

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really does feel good doesn't it? And so many people don't realise how easy it truly is - so I hoped that it might encourage people to give it a go! Good idea about the garlic spray. Amazingly we don't have a huge slug/snail problem, but most of the beds where are Hostas are planted are gravel-covered.

    • @tippysdaddy7468
      @tippysdaddy7468 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@niallgardens It certainly does Niall.
      Good that you don't have snail/slug problems, as well as your gravel keeping them off, the frogs and birds will be keeping numbers down too. One benefit of the lockdown is we have more time to enjoy our gardens, and/or enjoy your garden, so thank you for sharing.

    Great info! I've been dividing hostas, almost brutally, for many years. I probably should have made a video about it, but I guess I don't have to now! haha! Great advice, though. I only started really paying attention to hostas after I learned that I could eat them! Did you know that the spring shoots are amazing grilled with a pesto sauce? 2 -3 minutes on each side at 400 Fahrenheit and they're done! Give it a try sometime. If you need a recipe, there's a video on my channel about it. Cheers!

      Thanks very much! I did actually, though not deliberately... simply because I didn't have a good place to plant them. You absolutely can put them straight into a different location in the ground. In fact, I would say that's preferable! Hoping you have loads of success!

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ideal would actually be to transplant them straight into the soil. The only reason I put them into pots, was that I wasn't sure quite where I wanted them to go. However, they remained in their pots for year… I've only just planted them around the garden!

    My neighbor tore up a lot of soil to replace a rotted fence and it looks like all my hostas were killed. Temps are milder this year, so I can hardly wait to see what pops up. If anything does crown, it will be transplanted because that new fence is a ghastly white. Is there a term for excitement + dread?
