FILM DESCRIPTION:
This British-made historical drama depicts the rise of young Elizabeth Tudor to Queen of England, a reign of intrigue and betrayals. In 1554, Queen Mary I (Kathy Burke) tries to restore Catholicism as England's single faith. With no heir to the crown, she maneuvers to keep her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett) from succeeding her, but her efforts fail. With Mary dead, Elizabeth is proclaimed Queen of England in November 1558. Elizabeth relishes the return from exile of her childhood sweetheart, Lord Robert Dudley (Joseph Fiennes). Chief adviser Sir William Cecil (Richard Attenborough) urges the young Queen to forget personal matters and instead address the country's pressing problems. England is bankrupt, has no army, and is under serious threat from abroad. Elizabeth even has enemies within her own court, the most dangerous being the Duke of Norfolk (Christopher Eccleston). Ya from The Tudors. I'm really thinking of watching this movie since it continue years later after the 4th and Final Season.
Natalie, that's a fair point but I think the example of her cousin Mary Queen of Scots was more significant. Mary had been knocked from pillar to post by the lousy men she chose.
Actually it was Thomas Seymour that eroded her trust in men to the point that she refused to marry. Thomas took inappropriate interest in her and wanted to become king by marrying her against her will and conspiring to dethrone Mary. This put Elizabeth in a lot of danger and she had no control of the situation. She never wanted to be in a situation like that ever again so she refused to marry anyone in fear that her agency and potentially her life would be snatched away from her due to the naked ambition of men.

@e causey he was a great warrior king and it's sad that his son couldn't hold on to friends after Henry V invaded it and took it. Henry V wouldn't have invaded friends if France didn't have people out trying to assassinate him the moment he got crowned King. Elizabeth was mild-mannered before she became Queen and once she was crowned she realized she had to be mean and toughen up. She looks so much like her father I don't see how he could have ever denied she was his!

If you understand the power shifts that swirled about a royal court, any action or word could have lethal consequences. Elizabeth understood this better than most as she spent most of her early years expecting the headsman's axe during her sister's reign.
Blanchett should have won the Oscar for this role. Look at this scene and pay close attention to the message in this scene. Women out there claim your own life and stop living it for someone else. And that is not an anti-man thing, but people, men and women need to stop living their lives for someone else and start living their lives for themselves.

Can you believe it. cate blanchett in this film lost to gwyneth parltrow for shakespeare in love... gwyneth was good, but cate did the performance of that year. sometimes i do not know what those academy voters are thinking..... the biggest travesty i feel is when Ellen Burstyn lost for requiem for a dream to julia roberts. Ellen gave one of the best performance in a lifetime..
I agree, especially about Ellen Burstyn. Ellen actually raised acting to another level. A more recent Oscar travesty IMO was when Felicity Huffman lost out to Reese Witherspoon.
Julia Roberts should not even have been nominated when you look at her competition that year including, of course, Ellen Burstyn. Gwyneth should not have been nominated even when you don't look at her competition. Weinstein at his finest.
The academy accommodates the movers and shakers of the film industry (its membership base is made up of producers, directors, etc). Naturally, the academy is bias and favours the established actors and actresses over the unknown/the underdogs. They're also more likely to vote for someone that they've worked with in the past. My guess is that most of the academy members are American. The British royal family doesn't interest them as much as Shakespeare. Gwyneth is also American. Politics, it's everywhere.

Completely agree on both Cate and Ellen Burstyn! It's about being the "popular one" as the producers and managers pay a helluva money to the media, magazines, etc, the voters are being manipulated by that.
This part was pivotal, She wasn't just talking to Robert. She was also declaring it to Norfolk, Sussex and that ambassador guy..... But, her strong voice when she says; "And No master!" is spine tingling! I love this film!
It is said that the expression, "yaaasss queen!" originated because of this scene. I choose to believe this because Cate is just that awesome.
Elizabeth was my first Hollywood film. I had noticed an unknown girl called Cate Blanchett who I wanted to play Elizabeth. My agent said Studio wanted a star and if I kept insisting on an unknown actor, they will replace me. I said i had to go with my heart. The rest is history.

She was a very high achiever, fluent both verbally and in writing of five languages by the age of 12. No man was going to assert themselves above HRH. She knew what was what 'in a man's world' at such a time, and she was very well aware ALL her mother sacrificed. Urpsurping the throne was never going to happen whilst her royal posteria graced it. She kept two momentums of her mother close by at all times, she held her mother, (probably for what she did for her daughter's legal shot of the throne) in very high esteem. It's intriguing but sad at the same time. Queen Elizabeth is to be admired for standing head to head with the Catholic religion, men and the monarchist, and all that those three entailed of that time.
She hated the Catholic religion. The Spanish Armada was destroyed on the rocks

oh don't forget her father cut off her mom's head, then he declared her a bastard child, then turned around and made her legitimate again... people in her court were betraying her, military commanders constantly disobeying her orders to suit their own egos, the kingdom was dirt shit poor, the king of spain (her ex brother in-law) attacked England, her first cousin conspired to kill her, the pope declared her a whore and a heretic and basically put a bounty on her head....and people wonder why she never married...she saw men at their worst everyday! But this chick defeated the spanish, found and killed all her conspirators, brought economic growth, and religious peace to england, inspired patriotism and established culture through the arts...the Elizabethan era is called the 'golden age' of england...bc she's a FUCKING BADASS!!!

And Elizabeth moved away from Catherine Parr's household, but continued to write to her tenderly, and so did Catherine to her, so I believe there was still love and respect between them. Some believe Elizabeth went away because Catherine made it happen, perhaps to protect her.

Elizabeth has put her foot down. She knows the Tudor Dynasty will end with her and she's fine with it because she knows *exactly* why everyone wants her to marry. It's not for an heir. It's for the control. And she's been under someone else's thumb for most of her life. Queenship gave her freedom and she'd damn anyone take that away from her. That's why she declares "I have *one* mistress"
It's a reminder to everyone that she's not her father who had several. She's like her grandfather: faithful to one thing above all else, even though it wasn't a woman she was faithful too.
She is a fantastic actress, very powerful. This is one of my favourite roles ever played.

It's no great amazement why Elizabeth never married. Not only did her father dispose of wives like napkins but she was in Catherine Parr's household when Catherine was married to Thomas Seymour. And behind her back, Thomas was trying to seduce the very young Elizabeth. Then there was her sister Mary. Mary married Phillip II of Spain who basically abandoned her and went back home. Elizabeth was very intelligent. She must have looked around and said why on EARTH should I marry? The smartest thing she ever did was not marry and rule alone with her very competent advisors. It's not called the golden age for nothing.

Her depiction is wonderful. She started out as a young heir to the throne, clever but not experienced and putting entertainment and love before politics. The more she grows in the field, the more she realises love and trust is weakness, at least for her. And that's how she started gaining power and control, of herself first, then of her people. Even her speaking voice and gestures change during the film. She becomes more mature, respected and finally chooses power over love.
From Elizabeth to Galadriel to Hela, Cate Blanchett was born to play queens.
I have always felt a deep connection to this movie since it has come out. I've been married twice. After my first divorce, I waited 16 years before even thinking about marriage again because of the betrayals and heartache I have endured. I THOUGHT I found someone different...nope...another one that can't commit to ONE woman...and now...I will definitely be following in her footsteps for the remainder of my life. Married to MYself, MY life, MY happiness!

I don't think most people understand just how pivotal her reign was. She not only stood by her father's break from the Church- and subsequent creation of the Church of England- but financed the exploration of the New World (America)-- which paved the way for the colonies, which resulted in the creation of the U.S., that stated in their break-away Constitution, "Freedom of Religion."
